About five hours in, completed the first main quest and yeah, enjoying it. I'm hoping that as you go on, transportation options open up other than fast travel as the world is damn huge. I think the thing I like the most is just that I keep trying to dumb things and the game keeps letting me, most of the time. It almost always punished me for it, but it lets me do it. Set myself on fire a lot early on.

Interesting how the Amiibo support works. Chance of getting unique items from all of the Smash Zelda, 30th anniversary and Twilight Princess Amiibos, but the BotW Amiibos just give you random standard items.

Died a few times to a bokoblin group hanging out in one of those skull caves with the lanterns. Didn't have any arrows to knock down the lanterns, and hadn't gotten the hang of combat yet. This went on long enough that my four-year-old told me I should just try sneaking around them instead.

so I was stalking a bokoblin base and found a bunch of exploding barrels just outside. I took one with the intention of leaving it at the entrance and baiting them out, except they saw me and started shooting - not at me, at the barrel. it started to hiss. I threw it at them just in time for it to explode in their faces

UNFORTUNATELY

They had a leader who noticed the commotion and came over to investigate. The explosion started a fire, and one of the bokoblin clubs was caught in the blast. The leader tossed his old weapon aside so he could use this new, upgraded, flaming weapon which killed me in ONE SHOT.

not explicitly, unless I missed it. in the opening when you meet the old man there's an apple tree just outside of his campsite, and next to his fire you see some baked apples (if you take them he yells at you!). when I didn't see a prompt to cook these uncooked apples, I went into my inventory to see what was up. I discovered you could hold a bunch of apples all at once, so I did, then I went out of my inventory to drop them all in the fire. it worked! I did a similar experiment when I found a pot out in the wild. I discovered you could hold different types of uncooked food at once before dropping it in. (mushrooms and mixed fruits seems like a good early recipe). I assume the game is like this in a lot of areas. what a reversal from Skyward Sword.

took his apples and found his shack. i guess i wasn't paying too much attention.

i did realize it would be in those pots, that you'd need fire under them, and that you could hold items in your hand. i just stupidly didn't connect the dots of literally putting the food in the pot. i'm so used to prompts telling me what to do.

nice to not get them.

oh does he say it? I remember him saying that cooked food is more nutritious than raw (after I ate his delicious baked apples) but I don't recall him going through the steps to actually cook the food. I thought it was implied.

The Old Man talks a bit about things that wont cook together(Bugs and meat) and a little bit of how to make some of the cold resist food. I'm sure someone will post a big recipe list eventually but making food is a lot simpler than you think if you just don't throw in useless junk.

This also scared the **** out of me as well. I was entering a new area and all of a sudden BLOOD RED. I thought I was going to die to some sort of attack etc. I was running around for my life... from nothing.
