Probably the best move for Nintendo. You can't beat Microsoft when it comes to securing big exclusives, but partnerships like the one with Platinum Games and Mistwalker should give them some unique games. Then again, poor Metroid!
"Nintendo is hesitant to spend money to secure exclusive rights for third-party games on its platforms, but the company says it's looking to partner with developers who have unique ideas for Wii U games."
"While Nintendo is not entirely opposed to exploring that option, I don't think it would be an appropriate course of action for Nintendo to get into a battle with a company like Microsoft over the cost or the expense of trying to go head to head in a situation to try to obtain exclusive rights," said Iwata."
"But he added, "If a third-party developer or publisher has come up with an idea of a potentially very unique use of the Wii U functionality with such a device, there is a high possibility that Nintendo will be a partner with that third-party in an unprecedented manner."
Wait, what exclusives does the Xbox have? I mean, if they said Sony, I'd get it, but I can't really think of any exclusives, aside from some XBLA games.
Mass Effect, Gears of War, GTAIV DLC, BioShock was originally exclusive to the 360. Microsoft picks and chooses what it goes after, but if they want something they'll pay to get it. They gave Rockstar a $50 million loan for the GTAIV DLC, for instance. Things like that have made the 360 versions of multiplatform games the best-selling ones.
They've been touting developing 3rd party ties for years. I'll believe it when they deliver.
In terms of competing for exclusives I think I'm more concerned about what happens a year after release when the next Xbox and PS3 comes out. If the Wii U doesn't have enough under the hood we'll end up right back in the same situation where "multiplatform" means PSX and XboxX only.
Time to start thanking Intelligent Systems for Super Metroid instead.
Well, Intelligent Systems *is* pretty much the best game development team ever. Aside from SM, Advance Wars, and Fire Emblem, they also made the Paper Marios, Tetris Attack/Pokemon Puzzle League, and rather randomly Mario Kart Super Circuit.

Yeah, that's going to be a big thing. When the next Xbox releases, what happens to third-party games? The 360 has numerous 'exclusives' when you put it up against the Wii, only because the Wii never saw them. If developers, especially Western ones, move with Microsoft, that'll be a problem. We're already seeing many current gen games with no plans of being ported to the WiiU, ones coming out after the WiiU launch, so that could be tricky for them. A shoddily handled downport probably wouldn't send a good message to people.

honestly I think Nintendo's just holding back post-launch window announcements - it's what they said about their own game announcements this e3, and I don't think it's a coincidence that none of the 3rd party games are 2013 either.
Well, it's on them to make sure people know about that at some point. It was very odd that even when focusing on the launch, they didn't confirm big third-party games coming later. Batman isn't winning people over, but Tomb Raider or Castlevania or BioShock? That'd give people more confidence in the system. As it is, you have Crystal Dynamics and Kojima Productions saying they're not interested in porting games to the WiiU.
When it comes to third-party exclusive content--in terms of games or DLC, timed or permanent--Microsoft is definitely at the top. They're good about making sure the Xbox is the first place to get anything, which is something that Nintendo and Sony will have to deal with early on next-gen. They do that kinda thing early on.

BioShock WAS exclusive to 360 at first, console-wise.
For an entire year.

Oh jesus christ PC elitists make me depressed to be a PC gamer myself. It's incredibly obvious what he meant and it's a valid point since PC and console gamers don't overlap that much. ;>_>

Meh, I'd have to disagree there. There's a reason why Mass Effect took so long to come to PC and Bioshock didn't, because one was a timed exclusive and one wasn't. The only reason Bioshock didn't launch on the PS3 right away s because the PS3 wasn't out when Bioshock released and was very hard to develop for. There was never any exclusivity deal like there was with Mass Effect or Gears of War. If PCs didn't matter, then Mass Effect wouldn't have been a 360 exclusive for a whole year, same with Gears of War. Bioshock was not an exclusive. It never was.

MS has been very smart with how it used its money. It never needed big exclusives, just enough little additions (DLC, timed exclusivity, easier development) to keep going 60/40 (or even higher) against Sony on almost every big third party game. Don't know if they can pull that trick so effectively next gen.
-- We are living our lives Abound with so much information
Why do we care about the ratio of how it's all spread across the systems? I don't have stock in any of them, well actually I do have some in Microsoft but that's not the point, ha well anyways the games are the games, I don't care which company makes the most money.

Nintendo isn't going to get the CoD crowd, which is where all the big money is coming from. But if they can price the console correctly, they can definitely compete with just shoddy ports. That's how the PS2 did it.

Not sure how this applies to the PS2, at what point do you consider a multiplatform game a port? Are you referring to how Gamecube and Xbox had marginally better graphics?
-- One Piece: Pirates with style! -= Metal Gear Solid: Tactical Espionage Action =-
Well, I think that pretty much explains itself, calling PS2 versions of games on all those platforms "shoddy ports" is just not a case to make. For example I've played both the PS2 and Xbox version of say Red Dead Revolver, oddly enough the PS2 version wasn't shoddy. I actually preferred it for the controls.

I agree, most PS2 ports weren't all that shoddy since they were built for the PS2 itself, but the idea is there are superior versions. Like RE4 for the GC. Now I'm not saying the WiiU will be the next PS2, it just needs to hang in there with shoddy ports since it can't really compete with hardware.

what happened to that anyway No that's Metroid Dread. I don't think there ever was any official announcement for that, everything was just rumors.
2009 interview stuff
In an interview, Yoshio Sakamoto confirmed that the recently released Metroid: Other M is not the long rumored project. Sakamoto also said that the game was real at some point and may eventually be released, but Other M is "something that's completely different"
2010 interview stuff
In almost every interview with Yoshio Sakamoto, he is asked about Dread and whether or not it existedhis answer is always that he wouldn't deny the existence of such a project, but that he didn't have any plans to release it soon. Sakamoto later stated that Nintendo prefers to keep secrecy on the project, and also that he would like to "reset the situation at once and start from scratch.
IGN
On the May 3, 2010, 75th episode of IGN's Nintendo Voice Chat Podcast, editor Craig Harris confirmed that the story for Dread was fully written and he had seen it at one point in time, claiming "[Nintendo] has it and can bring it back at any time.

Before Bioshock came out, Microsoft announced that it'd be exclusive to 360 and PC. They most definitely got exclusivity rights early on.

Oh man, legit mistake on the release date there. I thought it was 2006 for a moment. My bad. But PC/360 exclusive isn't 360 exclusive no matter which way you style it.

Good thing the topic is about Microsoft exclusives, then!
Besides, Microsoft exclusive IS 360 exclusive when you're talking about consoles. Because, you know, the keyword is console exclusivity. If you wanted to play it on a video game console, you had to play it on 360 for the first year it existed.
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://i33.tinypic.com/2v1sq51.jpg
Besides, the post I was responding to specified on the 360. Yes, Bioshock was a Microsoft exclusive for a time, but that's a very different beast. If somebody wanted to play Bioshock they could easily play it on PC without having to buy a 360, it's not like it's especially hard to run. It's not like Microsoft haven't prevented games from getting PC releases for a while before (Mass Effect) but they didn't with Bioshock.

...So, in a topic about Nintendo, who aren't competing with PC directly, you feel it necessary to say "LOL IF IT'S ON PC IT'S NOT EXCLUSIVE"
Even though this entire topic is talking about consoles.
Besides, you were just flat out wrong. You said BioShock was never exclusive, period.
It was, in fact, initially a Microsoft exclusive.
And a 360 exclusive, console-wise, whether you want to be a PC elitist or not.
So the argument's over.
EDIT: And before you reply, don't make me quote the post where you say "it was never an exclusive at all it was ONLY not on ps3 because ps3 wasn't out and blahblahblah" >_>
-- SEP Nash, Smelling Like the Vault since 1996 Step FOUR! Get Paid! http://i33.tinypic.com/2v1sq51.jpg
Well, I still maintain that it would have been on the PS3 if the PS3 was easy to develop for, which it wasn't. But a game eing on the PC hurts the 360 since it prevents that game from selling systems. Hence Gears of War. Hence Mass Effect. The PC DOES compete with consoles. I doubt retail sales would be down as badly as they if there was no Steam, for instance.
