It confuses me that people deliberately draw out battles instead of winning them the easy and less tedious way. Doesn't it get boring playing a game with such dull battles when you don't get through them fast?

I just played through most of FF8 over Christmas, and I've got a big question about the Squall/Rinoa relationship. I took Rinoa with me to save Balamb Garden in Disc 2, and ended up getting a lot of scenes with her and Squall that seemed to build toward the romance a little. These scenes seemed pretty important; if you don't take her, is there anything to replace them?

No, not really. If you brought Quistis back to Garden with you, she'll come by and ask you if you want to take a walk, but there aren't any special scenes with them. If you brought a sausage fest to the Garden, then you get nothing.

As an FFVIII fan, I must LOL considering all the "bashing" I have to put up with whenever it's discussed on Board 8! FFIX is disproportionately loved on this board! You should relish that!

After playing the beginning of FFIX again recently I think the main problem with FFIX's card game is that no one ever has good cards. I played a decent amount of the games and got bored because. In Balamb Garden in FFVIII you can find like the first 6 levels of cards in there from random people, and then one or two people have really high level stuff, like a Moogle.

FFIX I played everyone in one of the towns and no one had anything past level 1 it was like "what is this"

I still don't think the mechanics of the card game are the worst ever. FF8's are superior but yeah, it's mostly getting no good cards ever.

Wow, like half of the cards can't be obtained until Disc 3, and some can only be won from the phantom card players in Memoria. That's kinda lame.

I always brought sausage fest to the Garden until one time I brought Rinoa and lo, CG CUTSCENE I NEVER SEEN BEFO'.

It was awesome.
Gonna try only Quistis next, but it feels so non canon.

Arguing about the order you like the games is so pointless, noone's changing their mind. Plus noone's giving the correct order, but that's neither here nor there!

FF9's card game is a big letdown. I agree with Lopen that one of the best parts about FF8's is how you can already build up your hand to be awesome before leaving for Timber. Let's see what rare cards you can get by then... Minimog, Quistis, Ifrit, Zell, Squall, Diablos and then losing Minimog so that you can get Kiros on your first visit to Deling City? Whereas with FF9 the only special ones you can get early are by winning the skipping challenge with Vivi. But above all that there's how stupid the rules are. When (in theory) one of the sidequests in the game is learning the rules to your sidequest game there's a problem with the card game. Nevermind the fact that even when you do learn the rules it's still heavily based on random luck. The "no rewards in-game for playing other than a Reflect Ring for winning the tournament" bit doesn't help either.

I don't think you can get the Squall card that early. I only obtained by defeating *Spoilers* Laguna later on in the game.

Bleh. First time playing through FFX-2 and I decided to skip most of the sidequest and getting additional dress spheres and holy s*** I am struggling with magus sisters.

Haha, first time through X-2, I hard a hard as hell time getting through the aeons in Ch3, and then stupid dragon in Ch4 made me restart my game.

FFX-2's main game isn't hard at all. Get into stuff like Via Infinito and that's a different story.

I was doing fine until now. Uuuughhhh....Think I'm gonna restart it and get the Dark Knight dress sphere...or at least level up abilities/characters.


Had the same problem with FF8 first time through (fell into the trap of abusing summons and no good junctions, collapsed in Disc 4)

Yeah, Dark Knight's a great dressphere.

And I had the same problem first time I played FFVIII as well. Lunatic Pandora and Ultimecia's Castle were pretty tough.

No matter, FFXII is up next anyway. Won't get around to FFX-2 for about a month or so when I get around to it in my rotation.

X-2 brings back nice memories. Wiping out enemies until right before the final area where the giant monster hindered my path took him out half an hour later and then the Vegnagun battles afterward took me an hour and a half and Shuyin took 3 minutes, second most dissapointing easy boss after an insane final boss fight first goes to Sephiroth after you beat Safer Sephiroth. Also on the topic of FF VIII I have collected all the cards beat every optional boss and collected all GFs within 48 hours not sure if that's a record but it's an accomplishment for me since it usually takes me 72 hours to beat console FF games.
