Yeah, I thought reading through Catching Fire was a bit of a chore at times. Just finished it Monday, so it took me two or three weeks! But c'mon, you guys can speed it up, even if you don't do discussions by chapter you could always do a post for each two-three chapters or even each part (7 chapters).

Mockingjay's first chapter was fine, just kinda introductory, but the last two chapters of Catching Fire are pretty great.

I like some of the music but it absolutely ruins Scar's character and the plot of the original if you read between the lines. It's kind of implied that Scar is impotent in the original film, and his treatment of the lionesses back at Pride Rock doesn't make nearly as much sense if you take Scar's "oh btw, I'm a dad" factor into account.

I don't think that makes it a terrible movie, but yeah. Still kinda annoying.

Rainbow Ride might be the hardest level, and the coin-related stars are a pain in the butt, but I always thought it was fun. I guess I'll have to see if that opinion holds up once I start playing tomorrow!! If anyone wants to join me in playing through the game, I say go for it :)

Tomorrow I'm going to start playing through SM64 again! I think this will be my fifth playthrough on the N64, and seventh overall (if VC and SM64 DS count). A few years back I started playing through it once a year!

There's so many good memories... but Tiny-Huge Island has got to be my least favorite level, from what I remember. I thought it was pretty painful!

Hello everyone,

This is The Official Nintendo 64 Appreciation Topic! Let this topic be dedicated to celebrating the greatest of all consoles mankind has ever known, and all the great games in its library.

What's the very first N64 game(s) you ever owned? Did you get more than one with your system?

I got a black N64 with gray controller for Christmas when I was six years old, and the game I got with it was Super Mario 64 :)

That was a very happy day. My second game was supposed to be Diddy Kong Racing, but they didn't have it at the store so I impatiently settled for a newly released game I knew nothing about, Banjo-Kazooie. That might be my favorite game of all time! Then I got DKR third. Much fun was had!

What's your Nintendo 64 story?

You haven't read Harry Potter? Oh my! The books are much better than the movies, it's a shame you already know the story though. I'd definitely suggest reading through the books once you finish The Hunger Games trilogy. I was actually planning to read through the series myself, for the first time since Book 7 came out. Readthrough topic potential... could be interesting!

I've been starting to read at like 12:30 because it's the only time I can and reading until about 2:30. Then waking up at 11. This is not a routine or healthy sleep schedule as far as I'm concerned, haha.

Time to start Chapter 6 of Catching Fire!

In response to Crim's post: They'd have to be that dumb to be Ulti's friends. Zing!

Ha, just kidding... I don't even know the guy. The writing isn't that strong, but who ever claimed it was? Or original (Besides Ulti's grossly uninformed friend, of course)? I'm not particularly passionate about the series but I'm definitely willing to defend them as entertaining and having the potential to be thought provoking for the YA crowd.

Also, talking about how many dumb/mindless people there are who aren't capable of liking quality things then being unable to fathom why the so-called "dumbed-down and mindless" Hunger Games series is so well liked is not a logical thought progression.

Also, shame on whoever compared THG to Harry Potter.

I'm on Chapter 4 of Catching Fire, I think I may end up being weird and liking this book better than the first.

Bought the trilogy a couple months ago, just started reading THG yesterday. I'm at Chapter 13 now and following along with this topic, though I'll likely catch up by the end of the day. I may add my thoughts once I catch up to the three of you.

I'm enjoying myself so far, but it took me a while to get into the storytelling. It's very conversational and lacking in description, unless you're talking about A) what Katniss ate B) what Katniss wore or C) Katniss being confused about someone's motives.

Definitely going to finish Book 1 before the movie's release Friday.

The farthest I had ever gotten in this game before last night was 6-4. And last night I made it farther than ever before, putting me in uncharted territory! I didn't beat World 6 until this morning. I kept track of my continues used but don't remember where all of them came from- it is likely that most of them were used in 6-4!

World 6

6-1: A little bit tricky, but fun. I'm a white guy if ever there's been one, but my sister was watching me play this level and said that I clearly have some asian in me. There's one awesome moment with four piranha plants all in a clump that looks pretty sweet if you time your jump right, and avoid narrow death! The extra life located in this level also helps a lot.

6-2: Underwater level, that means Bloopers :( Normally if I am Super Mario (big Mario) that helps me to get through the level without losing a life, and I can usually get an extra life here by finishing with 22 coins and the right amount of time left on the clock. The most annoying thing about this level is the game's tendency to suck you to your watery doom if you get too close to the bottom of the screen! Only had to use a continue on my first run of World 6.

6-3: Ugh, I hate this flying Cheep Cheep level. It's easy to die if you get too impatient (which I often am) and the jump at the end before the flagpole pretty much makes it impossible for me to bank an extra life. Used at least a couple continues here, and this level claimed at least seven or eight lives.

6-4: This is a hard level. It's a maze castle that requires some real platforming skills to beat. But the thing I respect about this level is that it doesn't have cheap difficulty: once you learn how to get to Bowser, you can consistently get to him. Video enclosed is from the SNES version of Lost Levels on All-Stars, but it will give you an idea of what this level is like. I probably had to try this level a dozen times!
Video:

Continues Used: 10

And now, we are all caught up! Hopefully I am able to beat Worlds 7 and 8 today :)

World 5

5-1: Has its tricky spots, but is not hard compared to the last two levels and manages to be a lot of fun to play! Power ups and coins are not hard to find here. This provides a more than welcome break from the difficulty found at the end of World 4! This level also introduces wind. I did get a game over here, but only because I killed myself after losing one life and deciding there was no reason to go into 5-2 without a full set of lives! Solid level.

5-2: Simple and fun. There is one tricky spot that requires you to run across a couple gaps (and underneath a piranha plant), but that is pretty much the only noteworthy thing about this level.

5-3: Ooh, this level. First part is fun, requiring you to make your way to a pipe above you by jumping on two red Koopa Paratroopas. Second part has flying bloopers and lots of jumps that have to be timed just right and you know how I feel about that :( Not too bad, but I lost several lives here over the course of my five attempts at this world. Got one game over here.

5-4: This castle is soooo stinkin' long. The main trick is to run through as much of the level as you can without dying! Pure platforming here, folks, and I actually enjoyed this level once I finished it- perhaps because it didn't claim as many lives as the castle before or after it. I did get two game overs in this level, though.

No real tricky spots to be found in World 5!

Last night I played for 2 hours and 17 minutes, getting as far as 6-4! Videos included for 4-3 and 4-4 are not me.

World 4

For those of you that might've secretly been hoping this game would give me fits, and disappointed when I breezed through the first three worlds, never fear. World 4 brought plenty of hair yanking, tongue biting and under breath cursing anger! But eventually, I prevailed. I am going to start providing links to videos of the levels that are the real stumpers, levels in which I was (at one point or another) hopelessly stuck.

4-1: The hardest x-1 level in this game or the original SMB thus far. There are some tricky jumps, including one with a spring that took me a while to figure out when I first started this game. There's also a Lakitu who seems a little more bloodthirsty than those who have come before him.

Thankfully this level has some power ups that are not too difficult to access, as well as a crap ton of coins and an extra life! It is possible to have six lives (Hidden 1 up, 100 coins, finish the level with 00 or 11 coins and --0 or --1 seconds left on clock) when you finish this level, which is what I tried to do! Not too tricky, once you learn this level.

4-2: This level is not easy, but I think it's fun. You can pretty much run through the level, narrowly avoiding Piranha Plants and even killing Hammer Bros as you go. I'd be lying if I said I didn't lose a life or two here, but this was probably my favorite level in World 4!

4-3: So it begins. 4-3 is the one. This is where the game stopped being all cute and fun and started causing me to be angry. The hardest part requires you to run full speed at a red Koopa Paratroopa that is positioned ever so slightly farther than Mario is capable of jumping. Time it right, and you live to see another day. If that Koopa Paratroopa is too high or too low, however, or if you don't jump precisely the right way, you are dead.

I found that running through the level as fast as possible was the secret to success! Stopping means losing momentum, and losing momentum means not jumping as far, which is not a good thing in this level. Lost four lives here in one go, also continued twice before even making it to 4-4.
Total Death Count: 12
Video:

4-4: The last level was tricky and all, but this one earns the title of "hardest World 4 level" with ease. I once made it to 4-4 with six lives, and was unable to beat it. Gigantic firebars, jumps that punish you for being anything other than tiny, and Bowser is chilling out behind a protective wall that makes it extremely hard to jump over him. I am done talking about this level's existence for the time being.
Total Death Count: 13

World 3

3-1: Pattern I've noticed, x-1 is pretty simple and generous with power ups. As a result, I was able to attain fire Mario status! In the words of Kool-Aid Man, "ohhhhh yeah." Not a hard level, and there is a green spring (they are super bouncy and make you fly way above the screen, if you did not know) that allows you to jump OVER the flagpole at the end of the level! Pretty cool.

3-2: Underwater levels... no me gusta. Fortunately Fire Mario's fireballs work underwater, which is totally logical and allows me to toast every squid that gets in my path! Cheep Cheeps are stupid and pretty harmless most of the time, but I still make a fish roast of them just to be safe. There's so freaking many of them... I get the feeling they could bring about an uprising if they wanted. And if my memories of SMB3 serve me right, that giant freaking fish that likes to swallow Mario (Big Boss, is it?) will make me pay later. Cashed in 100 coins to give me three lives here, btw!

3-3: Died once here. There are a couple jumps that require you to be running at full speed, which sometimes means jumping forward into the great unknown even when you don't know what enemies or moving platforms await! Pretty fun level I guess, but not much fun for the inexperienced jumper.

3-4: Oh cool, another castle that requires you to hurt yourself to proceed AND it's a maze. Level of the game material right here folks >_> There are four hidden blocks in a row you have to hit at one point, I had totally forgotten about them and discovered them on accident. I'm thankful, otherwise this level could've taken me a good bit longer!

And now, we are all caught up. I got to World 4-3 before dying, hopefully my luck will be better this time!

Note: In case I didn't mention this, I first played Lost Levels three or four months back. Therefore, I remember a few tricky spots and am already familiar with certain levels. So in the unlikely event you are ready to hail me as a gaming prodigy, don't- I would probably be failing badly were it not for previous experience.

World 2

2-1: AUGH so many Koopas and the flying variation. Fortunately power ups are a little easier to come by in this world, and there's even a 1-up I remember from trying to play through The Lost Levels like four months ago! :D Just a level that requires you to outmanuever the enemy.

2-2: Some developer thought it would be pretty humorous to have TWO invisible blocks in the same spot. Yes, this took me like twenty minutes to find when I first started playing Lost Levels (this was a few months back) and I'm still slightly bitter. Easy level other than that, just chock full of enemies.

2-3: Flying Cheep Cheep level, cute right? Yeah. Now add in flying Blooper :( Lost a life here, I was down to two lives by this point.

2-4: This level is evil. Forces you to be tiny Mario just to proceed through the level. Also, there is a tricky segment where you must run, fall and hold the control pad right to avoid falling to your fiery death! First time in this topic that I defeated Bowser by running underneath him.

World 1

1-1: Not a difficult level at all. Perhaps intended to lull unsuspecting gamers into a false sense of security? There is one immediately noticeable difference from SMB, however: the once bountiful power ups are far less common in this game, and to get to them will require talent. They also tend to put you in incredibly dangerous situations that could easily cost you a life!

1-2: What a fun level! This bad boy tests your jumping ability, its all about platforming skill. There are also a couple sets of Goombas and Buzzy Beetles that force you to be patient; attempting to run through the level without stopping once will probably result in loss of life.

1-3: Treetop level with FREAKING FLYING BLOOPERS. No, I am not quite over that yet. Those things are scary :(

1-4: Accidentally lost a life here by playing impatient. If I had a dollar for every firebar in this level, I would have roughly twenty dollars!

I am going to do a full write-up later but uh... I'm at World 4-3 >____>

Edit: Lawl, jinxed myself. That was an epic run though; I was not expecting to complete World 2 on my second attempt, and World 3 on my first! Full write-ups for Worlds 1-3 coming now.

Thanks! I watched the first few minutes of it. I'll have to pick this back up once I get to SMB3!

Ed, I just watched your "classic attempt" at SMB and lol'd irl... well done my friend. I hope that you have played again since that epic attempt?

Fake_Obsession, can you post that link? I would be very interested in seeing it!

Aren't they awful? I hate Bloopers enough in the water... seriously, one of my least favorite enemies in the Mario games. Not because they are poorly designed or stupid ideas for an enemy, just because they tend to do me in when I'm not paying attention >_>

Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels

Got to 2-4 on my first run. Initial thoughts:

~ World 1 wasn't too hard, only lost one life.

~ These levels are actually extremely fun to play!

~ HOLY CRAP FLYING BLOOPERS. D:

~ Thank God that there are "continues" in this game, allowing you to start back at the first level of the world that you died in. Basically, I am done with World 1 until I beat the game!

Here is my criteria for completing Lost Levels:

1) Beat World 1-8 without any warps, which unlocks World 9. Beat World 9

2) Beat Worlds A-D. To unlock these worlds you must beat the game eight times :( Warps, however, are allowed. This should not be too bad once I am able to beat the required seven or eight levels consistently.

More to come tonight! Going to work on a Stats project now

Beat every level in Second Quest! I won't go too in depth because it was very similar to the first run for me. Got to World 2 on my first try, warped there. Got to 6-4 on my second try, warped to 6-1. From there, finished with ease. I don't think I even got hit in World 8, this time! When you are Fire Mario 8-3 is super easy, 8-4 is not much tougher.

Shame that once you finish the second quest, the ending is the same ("we now present you with a new quest" or whatever it is). Next time I play Super Mario Bros., maybe I will finally beat the game without warps! 6-4 was the main reason I failed, this time around.

Super Mario Bros. is finished! If you have played and beaten SMB before, feel free to comment and rate the game.

Time: 4 hours, 22 minutes
Wall's Rating: 9/10
Favorite Level: 2-3
Least Favorite Level: 6-4

SMB is a great game, glad I got to play it again :)

For those of you who are still tuned in, any thoughts on The Lost Levels? I'm bracing myself for the worst and hoping for the best!
