Part 2, Chapter 10:

Only I keep wishing I could think of a way to...to show the Capitol they don't own me. That I'm more than just a piece in their games.

I'd just like to start by saying I love the description of Katniss' angry hitting of Peeta. When it says she slams her palms into his chest, I can only think of two things: one, that she's Uma Thurman in Kill Bill, doing the five-point exploding heart technique, or two, she's Ryu from Street Fighter doing a close-range Hadoken. It just evokes a funny image from my mind. Also, gotta love how Katniss' first response to "I secretly love you." is to go totally aggro and attack Peeta, like he did everything just to f*** with her. Seriously, the girl is f***ing crazy. I'm sure that, from the perspective of the other tributes, Katniss is like the Mitsuko of The Hunger Games, and it's only due to her status as a protagonist that she comes off positively.

Anyway, turns out that Peeta is once again far better at playing the crowd than Katniss, and she still doesn't seem to grasp this fact. Seriously, you've seen him wordsmithing his way around the whole time thus far, and you think he would tell everyone he loves you JUST to f*** with you? But anyway, here we have the first introduction of the Edward/Jacob love triangle of the series, only Peeta/Gale seem far less vapid (well, Peeta does). And Katniss of course has to be tsundere again with her "He's NOT my BOYFRIEND" shtick. And even more tsundere, suddenly she's like: "Um...did you guys think I was in love with him too? EVEN THOUGH I'M TOTALLY NOT AT ALL!"

And then more tsundere fighting (seriously, Katniss is the very goddamn definition of tsundere in her interactions with Peeta through the book thus far). Christopher Titus reference, my favorite comedian (okay, so it's just Titus, but I'll take what I can get). And now, Katniss is about ready to start the games, but not before we get more info on District 1 Girl being a sneaky little sneak with her poisoned ring. And let the games...

BEGIN!

Katniss as Mitsuko? That's an interesting thought...

Definitely one of the things that endears me to Katniss the most is when anyone is nice to her, even in the smallest way, it just ****es her right off. And Peeta trying to have a heart to heart moment with her there on the roof? Screw that. Katniss Everdeen doesn't do heart to hearts. She eats hearts for breakfast. A whole plate of hearts. With gravy.

Chapter 11
Pages 148-160

A grin crosses my face. “Thanks for the knife,” I think.

Summary:
5… 4… 3… 2… 1… Blast off!
It’s 60 seconds until the official start of the Games, which kick off with something called the “Cornucopia” (y’know, those Thanksgiving basket horn things). Except instead of like, pumpkins and turkey feathers and yams and what have you, inside this thing are all the best weapons and supplies available in the game. Thing is, the career tributes smell blood in the water and are poised to strike down anyone fool enough to go for it. Why you ask? Because they’re dicks. But also because they want all that stuff for themselves obviously. Kat thinks she’s got the speed to take them on, get her bow and arrows and gtfo with time to spare, but she glances at Peeta and he shakes his head at her. I honestly can’t figure this guy out. Is he trying to distract her, or is he genuinely looking out for her? Time will tell.
Kat forgets herself for a second, which costs her a chance at the cornucopia. She books it for the woods, but not before getting a face full of District 9 blood. Kat is no fan of stirring the paint, so she’s certainly not a fan of this guy’s gooey life fluid in her face. She snatches up the bright orange backpack they were tousling over, only to notice someone stick a knife in the guy’s back. She locks eyes with another lovely lady (this time one with knives!), and I can only imaging she’s thinking to herself “here we go again.” Knife girl wants to penetrate Kat, but Kat just isn’t ready for that level of intimacy and runs into the trees, but not before getting a knife lodged in her backpack. No means no, knife girl!
So our heroine gets away safe and sound, for now. But there’s a bigger problem looming, lack of water. Kat’s state of moistness is going to have to take a back seat until tomorrow though, because it’s getting dark and the people in charge are about to shoot the canons announcing the dead while projecting their images into the sky. Kat is relived to discover Foxface made it through the initial bloodbath, and thinks there might be some hope for their relationship yet. Peeta also made it through, surprise surprise.
Now that she knows whose dead and whose alive, Kat settles down in a tree (how appropriate!) to catch some Z’s. She’s pulled out of her slumber when she hears some ****ing idiot making a fire a little ways away. She’s pissed that her general location has been compromised by the unknown dumb ass below, but gets swift retribution as the little lady’s life is choked out of her. She’s still just hanging back in her tree when she hears the voices of the Careers Alliance below. Much to hear surprise, young master Peeta is among them.
I knew Peeta was a devious little bastard.

Thoughts:
If there’s anything I’ve learned about actual survival by watching Survivor, it’s that a tarp is vital. Kat’s got herself a 3’x3’ piece of plastic, and I’m thinking that it’s really going to come in handy. Sweet score! Honestly, if I were her, I would probably ditch the orange backpack all together. There’s a reason why hunters wear bright orange in the woods, and it’s not so they can blend in. I’d probably just jury-rig the tarp to carry all my stuff in – less convenient but much less conspicuous.
Honestly, I can’t say I’m surprised that Peeta is hanging out with the career tributes. I knew there was something oily and underhanded about him from the start. At this point, I’m just curious as to how he was able to join them. I’m also wondering if they’ve talked to him at all about Katniss, and what part she’s currently playing in their alliance. Maybe they’re actively looking for her to join them at this point. Interesting.

Part 2, Chapter 11:

"We're wasting time! I'll go finish her and let's move on!" I almost fall out of the tree. The voice belongs to Peeta.

Honestly, the first thing I noticed reading this chapter is that Katniss grabbed a tarp and bread before the backpack. Honestly, I never noticed that she did that before. It makes sense, given how she describes it being close to her, but I guess I never considered it until I read a little bit more carefully. And now time for nameless tributes to be slaughtered! District 9 boy is so irrelevant...and the sad thing is that this guy who gets killed, like, two pages into the chapter is the most relevant character from district nine in the entire series (I don't think that's really a spoiler, is it?) But yeah, hands off Katniss' backpack, b****. Thanks to District 2 Girl, aka the best tribute in this book, for killing District 9 Boy and helping Katniss escape with a knife in her possession. Also, how funny is it that Katniss' overstrategizing is what costs her the bow and arrows? She's SO the Russell Hantz of this game.

I do like the fact that there are constant reminders of the fact that there's a viewing audience watching the Hunger Games play out. It adds an extra layer beyond just "Oh, I have to survive" because you have to play to the cameras as well. That's one place I give THG props ahead of Battle Royale, because in the book, it's just kids on an island, and I'm pretty sure nothing is televised. The manga is a different story, but I'm comparing book to book. But yeah, the idea that people are betting on which kids survive...it's barbaric, but at the same time, it makes perfect sense. I mean, they bet on the winner of British Big Brother too, and are right a lot of the time.

Katniss meanwhile has no water, but a good grasp on the other survival aspects of the game, as she has food and means of getting more food, a tarp, sleeping bag, a knife, and of course her woodlands training. At least she's got the strategy/survival aspects of the game down, which are really all that matter at this point, since the social game is only worth a damn really in the pre-show when you're trying to get peoples' help with sponsorships and such.

So anyway, day one and half the field is gone. Looking at the survivors as of the death recap, it's pretty standard. You've got the career duo from 1, career duo from 2, career girl from 4 (I WOULD like to know who got the boy though), gimp from 10, Foxface from 5, , duo from 11, Katniss and Peeta. The only two that stand out as being still alive are the district 3 boy and the district 8 girl, neither or whom have gotten any screentime thus far and are thus Edgically inviable winners. And of course Katniss goes over the names in her head and forgets old gimpy, which is a blow to his chances too.

And then Katniss meets her first real opponent, by which I mean she hate-stares at an opponent from afar. And given how the above-paragraph only references two expendable males, I think it's pretty girl that District 8 Girl done f***ed up and got her ass killed by the Career pack. It really is just like Survivor, only with death instead of going to the jury. But yeah, you've got the Careers...and PEETA? Gasp. That IS a pretty intense way to end the chapter, leaving you on a total cliffhanger like that, wondering why the hell (and how the hell) Peeta got in with those guys. But it seems Mr. Mellark has more up his sleeves than meets the eye.

The first two books are real real sweet so I'm happy to read this topic, and hope you guys enjoy them as much as I did!

The third book, however, is so horrible IMO, just finished it.

(Possible spoilers for the third book, although very vague):

Specifically, a certain major character's unwillingness to ever do anything ever ever ever except when that something is an extraordinarily stupid idea. I get it, post traumatic stress disorder and everything. I just think Collins should've either changed the POV or not had the main character get PTSD.

Gonna post two a day for a while. I wanna get book 1 out of the way before the movie premier.

Chapter 12
Pages 161-171

There’s only one good reason Haymitch could be withholding water from me. Because he knows I’ve almost found it.

Summary:
Little miss huntress is in dire need of water at this point, having gone about two days without the stuff. And with Kat getting so physical lately, she definitely needs to replenish her supply. She might also want a cigarette, but that’s just speculation at this point. She also overhears a conversation the Careers Alliance is having about how bad they want to take her out and how much they wanna drop dat dead weight Peeta.
Katniss panders to the cameras for a second, jumping down from her tree and flashing that winning smile of hers, and then clears out of the area. Nothing much else really happens this chapter, except in her dehydrated state Katniss is even more paranoid than normal. Which honestly I didn’t think was possible, but it is apparently so. She thinks she either A) has no sponsors – but doesn’t really believe that because she ****ing killed it up in there, B) Haymitch is giving all the crap from the sponsors to Peeta, or C) Haymitch is just being a massive tool and withholding the sponsors gifts for fun (a sponsor could buy her water and send it to her in the arena).
Thankfully, Kat finally gets her hands on some water the old school way, by finding it, and she’s quickly back in the game. But as she’s resting in a tree, something disastrous happens.
Katniss might literally be the girl who was on fire pretty soon.

Thoughts:
I wonder if the fire was caused by the dead girl from District 8’s campfire. I also wonder if the Careers Alliance set the fire on purpose to try to drive out anyone that might be hiding in the forest. Seems like a piece of information Peeta could have given up. I’m sure he knows Katniss would definitely be hiding in the trees, and after hearing about how much the careers want to take her out, they might have threatened him or something. Or maybe he told them willingly. Or maybe that’s not what’s going on at all lol.
I think that’s pretty much all the explanation we’re going to get on sponsors. I get how they work, but I’d almost like to see a chapter back in the Capitol where Haymitch is dealing with them. I’m just interested in the process I guess.

Chapter 13
Pages 172-184

Now I smile. “How’s everything with you?” I call down cheerfully. This takes them aback, but I know the crowd will love it.

Summary:
I sort of saw this coming since it was in the movie trailer, but it was exciting none the less. The fire pretty much screwed over whatever plan Katniss had of resting and regrouping near her newly found pond. Katniss flees, following the animals Pocahontas style, away from the wall of flame. I’m glad she answers my questions from chapter 12 about the camp fire and the Career Alliance – telling us that neither could be the culprits. This was a Gamemaker devised fire, she can tell from the uniformity of the flames. They want to drive the tributes closer together since the action's been a little sparse lately.
Kat gets a slight reprieve under a rocky outcropping, just long enough to catch her breath, before some ass hat starts shooting fireballs at her. She’s like, “Not today, Mario,” and books it outta there. Kat manages to dodge for a while, but finally gets clipped in the leg. Luckily she’s able to keep her wits about her, and somehow gets far enough away that the Gamemaker planted fireball launchers can’t reach her. The smoke begins to clear and she finds a small pool where she can soak her scorched leg and hands. Our girl must be delirious from smoke inhalation, because she passes out right there on the ground, daring the Career Alliance to come and find her.
And find her they do! Luckily she hears them coming and gets a bit of a head start, scrambling up an impressively tall tree. +2 dexterity Katniss! We finally learn the names of Boy 2 and Girl 1, Cato and Glimmer respectively. I have to agree with Katniss when she makes fun of District 1 for the names they give their kids, Glimmer is pretty bad. Reminds me of celebrities who give their kids crazy names. Kat exchanges some witty banter with the group, and pretty much dares them to come and get her. They try and fail spectacularly, but Kat scavenges an arrow out of the deal. It’s getting dark, and Peeta finally chimes in and says to leave her until the morning. Not like she’s going anywhere! But I’ve got a sneaking suspicion that’s exactly where she’s going.
Finally Rue lurks back into the picture, still intent on stalking our fair heroine. She’s in the next tree over, and she’s pointing to something above Kat’s head. What could it be?

Thoughts:
I love what a gamer Katniss is. Her head is always in the game, and she frequently plays to the cameras and the audience. Even as she’s nearly being engulfed in flame she’s like “Yep, this is totally a Gamemaker thing, damn them.” At this point we haven’t spent much time with the other tributes in the arena, but it seems like they’re mostly just focused on killing. Kat is focused on staying alive and being as dashing and snarky as humanly possible.

Honestly, if I weren’t in the Career Alliance, I’d focus on trying to find some of the other remaining tributes to see if they wanted to try and take those bastards out. But just like in Survivor, keeping the people not in your alliance divided is essential for success.

I’ve been thinking about this a little lately. I wonder how someone comes to live in the Capitol, or if it is at all possible for someone to move to a different district.
About halfway through the book!

Moving right along.

Chapter 14
Pages 185-194

The swelling. The pain. The ooze. Watching Glimmer twitching to death on the ground. It’s a lot to handle before the sun has even cleared the horizon.

Summary:
We join Kat back in her tree, trying to figure out what the hell to do about the wasp nest perched precariously above her. Normally this wouldn’t be too big of a deal, but it happens to be a tracker jacker nest – another of the Capitol’s genetically engineered animals. She decides her best chance is to sick the ravenous, poisonous, deadly little beasts on the Career Alliance down below. But how to do it without the wasps noticing? Smartly, Kat waits for the anthem to blare in the arena before she sets to work on sawing off the branch of the tree holding the nest.
Uncharacteristically of Katniss, she’s not fast enough to finish, so she’ll have to do it first thing in the morning.
Kat’s luck does begin to change for the better though, because as she makes her way back to her sleeping back from the nest, she finds a small pot of miracle medicine from her sponsors. She concludes she’s got to have multiple, because something as expensive as this would have to have several people going in. The salve all but neutralizes her burns, and Kat’s got full mobility again. HP boost +200!
Next morning Kat warns her little stalker from District 11 about what she’s planning, and Rue takes off. Kat finishes the job, but not before getting stung a good 3 times. Her scheme works though, and the Career Alliance lights out toward the lake to get away from the swarm. Glimmer and Girl 4 aren’t lucky or fast enough to get away, and succumb to the hive mind.
Apparently the affects of the wasp venom aren’t totally in effect yet, because Kat makes it back to her pool, albeit a little wobbly. Then suddenly, wait! Crap! That dumb ***** Glimmer had the bow and arrows. Kat knows if her body is taken out of the game, the bow and arrows will be lost forever. She bolts back to the clearing, only to be greeted with the two canon shots signifying both Glimmer and Girl 4’s deaths. Although Glimmer’s body is bloated, puss filled, and stinking, Kat perseveres and pries the bow from her cold, dead fingers – just in time to be greeted by the returning Careers Alliance. Lucky for her, the first one through the trees is Peeta-
who gets her on her feet and shoves her away. Effectively saving her life. Again. Wtf.
She runs and some trippy **** happens and our little heroine is fed up with this world and blacks out.

Thoughts:
Wow, I have no problem saying that this chapter was seriously disgusting. I think if anything from the book is cut for the movie it’s going to be this – unless it has some bigger effect later on down the line.
So Peeta saves Katniss’ life, but why? I seriously can’t figure this kid out. Every time I think I understand what he’s up to, he does something else. I don’t know what to think about him. I’m sure it’ll become clear at some point what his big idea is, but as of right now. Who knows. Maybe he does really love her. But I don’t think that’s the case. Maybe he’s still playing the love angle up to the sponsors, thinking he’ll get more stuff the longer Kat stays alive. This seems more plausible. Or maybe Kat hallucinated it, who knows.

I was so glad when Katniss got the medicine to take care of her burns. I would honestly rather see her at full strength, kicking ass, than struggling and weak. But just as she gets up, she gets knocked back down again by the wasp bites. Hopefully she gets through the effects and they wear off on their own relatively soon. And she’s got her bow and arrows now right? I really wanna see her nail someone.

Update time? Yes, I think so.

Chapter 15
Pages 195-207

”You know, they’re not the only ones who can form alliances,” I say.

Summary:
Katniss awakens from her stupor, taking stock of her body and her surroundings. She has no idea how long she’s been out, but decides that the best thing to do for the moment is to get moving. Her medicine doesn’t work on the wasp stings, so there’s not much else she can do there. She thinks about what Peeta did for her, and I have to laugh, because she’s thinking pretty much the exact same things I was at the end of the last chapter. She finds some water, cleans herself and her weapons up, and hunts some delicious, delicious rabbit. She’s now moving against the current of a small river she’s found, going uphill – which is apparently a good thing.
Kat shoots some kind of crazy bird, and is positively giddy at the thought of again being able to eat all the food, but she notices something. To absolutely no one’s surprise it’s Rue stalking her from behind a tree. Katniss suggests they form a counter alliance, and they do. They share their food and their knowledge with each other, and Rue is able to help with the wasp stings. And also school Kat on what night vision goggles are.
I think Rue sees Katniss as an older sister figure of sorts, just like Rue reminds Kat of Prim. And of course Rue saw Kat volunteer as tribute in her sister’s place, so maybe she feels like Kat will protect her in some way. Rue has yet to get anything from her sponsors, if she even has any, but maybe that’s because she hasn’t really needed anything. Katniss reassures her that she’ll get something soon, and they set out to find a place to sleep.
I guess no one died today, but we do find out two things. Rue didn’t think Peeta’s love confession was an act, and Peeta is no longer in the Careers Alliance. Interesting.
Finally, we see our two little conspirators planning to put the “Hunger” back into “Hunger Games.”

Thoughts:
I love how smart yet how stupid Katniss is all the time. It’s like she’s clever without having any idea that she’s clever. Anyway, I’m glad Kat took my suggestion of teaming up with someone to try and take out the Careers Alliance. Besides that, she knows exactly where they are, and Rue seems to have ample info on them. Honestly, taking them out shouldn’t be all that hard. I know they’re formulating some kind of plan, but really couldn’t Kat just sit up in a tree and take potshots at them when they sit down to rest? That’s what I’d do anyway.
But it’s clear to me now that Kat isn’t so much of a charge in guns blazing girl, as a sit back and plan my enemy’s demise type girl. Either way, I think things are about to get hairy.

I also found it interesting that the wasp venom gave her dreams of Prim being killed, her father dying, and herself dying, but nothing about her mother. Even if the animosity is gone, I don’t think Katniss really feels much of anything toward her mother anymore. I also find it funny how several times Kat has thought to herself about some herbal remedy for something that her mother would use, but completely can’t recall it. Like she totally wrote her mom off and just didn’t pay attention to her at all.

And I’m not sure what to make of Rue at this point. She could be playing Kat, and she could be sincere. I never know what to think of anyone anymore. No wonder Kat is so paranoid!

Kat and Rue eat some breakfast and then Kat drops a knowledge bomb on Rue. She’s formulated a plan to take out the Career’s supply base. By late afternoon they’re ready to do the damn thing, but not before Rue tells Kat the reason she knew she could trust her. It was the mockingjay pin. See, Rue loves music, and mockingjays are musical, and blah blah blah 12 year old girl logic. The important thing here is Madge comes through in the clutch like a good girlfriend always does.
Rue teaches Kat her special mockingjay signal, a little four note run they can whistle to let each other know they’re alright, which the mockingjays will repeat. Then they’re off in separate directions; Rue to set three decoy fires to lure the Careers away and Katniss to scout out the Career’s camp and figure a way to dispose of their supplies. My first thought would be to steal as much of it as possible, but that’s not Kat’s prerogative.
Katniss briefly wonders about Peeta, and if that canon fire this morning signified his death. But then she remembers that she doesn’t really care and sneaks up on the Career’s camp – which is apparently right by the Cornucopia. The supplies have all been taken out and stacked into a pyramid a weirdly far distance away. What’s a hunter to do? Also at the Career’s camp is Boy 3, a completely unremarkable, scrawny, weak looking fellow that Katniss has absolutely no recollection of throughout the whole Games process. Smartly, she wonders what he’s doing hanging with the Careers. She doesn’t have much time to think about it, as Rue lights the first distraction fire, and the Careers elect to take him with them for extra hunting support. And now the real fun begins.
Kat is mulling over how to dispose of the supplies when Foxface saunters into the picture. She does a sexy dance because she figures Kat is probably watching, and pilfers some apples from the pyramid. Then she lights out of there as fast as she can. Kat’s like “well that was enjoyable but I’m not sure what it has to do with- wait a minute!” She notices the earth around the pyramid has been dug up and patted back down. This of course can only mean one thing, Katniss thinks to herself, “The boy from District 3 that is skulking around with the Careers is an explosives expert and he used the mines from the first day at the Cornucopia to booby… heh, booby… booby trap the supply pyramid! Aha! That’s why Foxface’s dance was so sexy yet weird!” This is what she was thinking verbatim guys. I wouldn’t lie to you.
So it’s time to make some things explode, and Katniss gives herself three arrows to get the job done. Finally, she rips the bag with the apples in it open all the way, causing them to strew themselves about the ground. This causes the pressure sensitive mines to go off – staring a chain reaction and blowing all the supplies to smithereens.
Success! Or it would be, if Katniss wasn’t wildly flying through the air backwards at this very moment.

Thoughts:
Katniss really likes to play the protector, I think because she likes to be in control of what’s happening around her. I can see where she’s coming from and sympathize with her there. I’m wondering why if Foxface could skip over the mines to gather supplies, why couldn’t Katniss? Maybe she just didn’t want to risk it, or maybe it just serves to illustrate just how crafty Foxface really is. Also, Katniss, ever hear of a little thing called a rock? You’re in a forest, why not find a few and chuck those at the mines? I’d want to keep as many arrows in my quiver as possible thank you very much.
And again, Katniss is practically on top of the Careers. At least close enough that she can clearly hear what they’re saying. Why not just shoot them? You can get at least one clean kill, and probably another before they even know what hit them. You don’t have to worry about District 3 boy doing anything. So you could effectively take out Cato and either Girl 2 or Boy 1 with pretty much zero trouble. And they wouldn’t be able to see you, so you could easily slip away after you finish the job. I know if someone in my group got shot with the arrow, the last thing I’d be thinking about is the trajectory and trying to figure out where it came from. I’d be running for cover!

Phew. Long update is long.

Chapter 16
Pages 208-221

In our world, I rank music somewhere between hair ribbons and rainbows in terms of usefulness. At least a rainbow gives you a tip about the weather.

Summary:
Any lingering questions there might have been about trust all but disappear between Katniss and Rue as they settle in for the night. Still, only one of them can make it through the Games alive. This does not bode well for our young stalker from District 11. But Kat’s got other matters to tend to, specifically how she’s gonna cut off the Careers Alliance’s food/supply stash. Since their alliance is comprised of the most technically “strong” or well trained people in the game, they obviously were able to take a lot away from the Cornucopia. They didn’t have to hurry and hide. Katniss thinks she can work this to her advantage though, because the careers all coming from Districts which have always had plenty to go around will make it much harder for them when they have absolutely nothing. Katniss knows how to be hungry. But Katniss also knows how to eat, so.
Kat and Rue re-cap who’s still breathing, and it goes a little something like:
Boy 1 (Marvel) - Career
Boy 2 (Cato) - Career
Girl 2 (Clove) - Career
Boy 3
Boy 10 (The gimp)
Boy 11 (Thresh)
Girl 11 (Rue)
Boy 12 (Peeta)
Girl 12 (Katniss)
And someone who they claim they can’t remember. Katniss’ Hunger Games crush extraordinar, Foxface, who I believe is from… District 5? I think so. You know Kat remembers that fiery red maine. Don’t pretend like you don’t, lover girl.

Bought the trilogy a couple months ago, just started reading THG yesterday. I'm at Chapter 13 now and following along with this topic, though I'll likely catch up by the end of the day. I may add my thoughts once I catch up to the three of you.

I'm enjoying myself so far, but it took me a while to get into the storytelling. It's very conversational and lacking in description, unless you're talking about A) what Katniss ate B) what Katniss wore or C) Katniss being confused about someone's motives.

Definitely going to finish Book 1 before the movie's release Friday.

It's good if you like shows like Survivor, and if you like strong female protagonists, and are a fan of Battle Royale/dystopian future type stories. But if the plot synopsis doesn't interest you I can't imagine the actual book would turn your opinion around.

Of course I can only speak in terms of the first book.

Gonna try and power through 3 or 4 chapters tonight. We'll see how it goes!

Part 2, Chapter 12:

Man, Peeta may have gotten in good with the Careers, but it looks like he done got f***ed up doing so. Gotta love how Survivor-esque this game is though. Peeta leaves and immediately people start talking s*** about him, except for like, one person who thinks he's useful (If I had to guess, I'd say that person is probably district 4 girl, since honestly it gives her characterization which she desperately needs). And of course, you've gotta love them talking s*** about Katniss too, while she's fully awake and listening to them. Meanwhile, Peeta scores his first kill, which is like...seriously? He killed someone before Katniss did? Granted, he killed someone already dying, but still, WTF Katniss. Get your game on girl. Although she DOES decide to just act like she's on the ball for some reason, and I find that hilarious. She's just like "Yeah, I heard 'em talkin' about me. Jealous?" But she really has no idea what she's doing.

Anyway, big section about the survival aspect of the game, with Katniss catching rabbits, cooking rabbits, camouflaging her bag, and searching for water because (and I love how THIS is given proper detail) she's dehydrated and having brown pee. Seriously though, Suzanne Collins. You give us bare bones descriptions of almost every person in the cast...yet make sure we're aware of Katniss' pee situation. That's nice. This eventually drives her insane, which would be awesome if her insanity were something fun to watch, like running through the jungle in her underwear while screaming like a madwoman. But sadly, she's just dehydrating and tired and achey. It's the lame kind of insanity. She's even starting to overanalyze Haymitch's inaction (okay, granted, she's in the right here...but godDAMN Katniss is crazy).

Anyway, she finds water and takes the time to purify it before drinking it. Man, Rudy Boesch and Sue Hawk would just drink whatever the f*** they feel like and not care. Man up, Katniss. And everything is all better...until apparently there's fire. Fire EVERYWHERE. FIRE O'ER THE LAND! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Part 2, Chapter 13:

It's been a bit warm for my taste.

So yeah, apparently the producers of the hunger games can just defy the laws of science and just start moving walls of fire like you're trying to get to the Megaton Hammer. (I would've said "in the Fire Temple", but it seemed kinda stupid to say fire, in the Fire Temple). Anyway, Katniss is running running running from the wall of fire...and then the Gamemakers decide "You know what? Let's screw with her some more" and start hurting fireballs like goddamn Mario (lotta Nintendo references from me this chapter).

Oh s***. If there is one thing you do NOT do EVER...it is mess with a girl's hair. How DARE they allow Katniss' gorgeous brunette braid be burned? They shall PAY for this injustice. Pay dearly. But anyway, Katniss survives, but not before getting absolutely f***ed up by some fire. She finds a new source off water though and just stays there because why the hell not? Water feels good on burns, I assume. But anyway, she gets somewhat caught and suddenly she has a pack of angry and jealous career tributes all wanting her blood. Her sweet, delicious blood. Mmmm...

Where was I? She gets into a tree because apparently she's still good enough for that, despite her injuries, and she's clearly running on adrenaline to keep her mind off the pain just long enough to reach a safe place. And thankfully for Katniss, she succeeds in not being fat (or at least big), the very trait that often hinders even the manliest of men on Survivor, and buys her some respite from the otherwise unstoppable Career Juggernaut (not to imply that the X-Man Juggernaut would be a Career, but let's be honest here, he totally would be). And what does Katniss do, in a temporary position of the high ground (literally)? Why, she mocks the Careers like a bawss. And she's absolutely right. They really can't do s*** to her at this point, and this is proven when Cato goes down faster than Lindsay Lohan in a back alley.

Also, important to note is the fact that we finally learn the names of District 1 Girl (Glimmer) and District 2 Boy (Cato). Glimmer is a far superior name, even if it is pretentious and douchebaggish. Fun fact: Glimmer sucks with a bow and arrows, which makes me wonder why the hell she has them in the first place. Seems like that's the sort of s*** that would just slow down someone who's more skilled with a different weapon. But then it occurs to me that Glimmer is probably completely incompetent (District 1 doesn't really seem to have anything that makes it worthy of being a Career district, other than being considered as such), and that makes me laugh, because I already know she's blonde, and it's such a funny stereotype in a life or death situation.

But anyway, the end of the chapter brings the return of Rue! Rue, who I find far more bearable than goddamn Prim despite them being the same age, because Rue actually seems like she's not a complete pushover. What will this new twist bring our heroine? Find out next time!

Wasn't she like hiding in a nearby bush or something? If she can hear their conversation then they can her move. A bow and arrow is harder to shoot than you think... it's not like a gun that you can just point and shoot easily. They would definitely hear/notice her if she was that close.
