Second Quest, World 1

This provided a little slice of humble pie.. perhaps that will be good before I move on to Lost Levels? I lost one life in 1-4, where there are like a billion more firebars than normal. Lost two in 2-1, one because I was rushing and ran into a buzzy beetle (lol) and another when I jumped a tad bit early. Lost my fourth life (I got the extra life in 1-2) on 2-3 when I was so busy dodging cheep cheeps that I ran into a random koopa!

Definitely a bit more tricky than the first run. Going to warp ahead to World 2 now and proceed from there!

Super Mario Bros. is complete :)

7-4: This was not too hard once I got the pattern right. I did get lucky timing my jump over Bowser, though! I lost a couple lives getting through World 7.

World 8

Started with two lives.

8-1: Not a very hard level, minus THE JUMP. The infamous jump. Okay, so it's not really infamous, but I did lose a life here. But I've played through SMB in the last six months so I remembered how to do that.

8-2: This and 8-3 are the hardest levels in the game, imo. All those bullet bills and enemy placements based on how you have to jump make it very tricky! Thankfully there is a 1-up in this level, so as long as you are patient and can get through the first few obstacles you have unlimited tries. I had two lives at this point!

8-3: I just kinda said screw it and ran/jumped as fast as I possibly could through the level! Somehow this got me through. Not an easy level by any means, as it is pretty easy to take an accidental hit! Thankfully I was able to grab both power-ups, since I went from (at start of level) Regular Mario to Super Mario (hit by HB) back to Regular Mario. Solid challenge here.

8-4: I remembered the pattern, which saved me some time. Walked across the bottom of the water area as regular Mario on both tries! The hammer bro right before Bowser killed me the first time.

The second time, I jumped out of the pipe immediately and managed to land atop the hammer bro just as he was throwing his first hammer. I survived. From there, I just charged Bowser and the timing of my jump worked out just right!

Pretty fun final castle! And I finally got something other than "your princess is in another castle" :)

Because I got through SMB so quickly, I'm going to try to do a no warp run of the second quest, which I have never beaten!!

NOTE: I am giving the play by play of what happened through the end of my first playthrough last night. Every post so far today is just my commentary on what has already happened, in case that was not clear.

World 7

This is where my first playthrough attempt stalled. Went into this one with two lives left.

7-1: Where the game starts getting challenging, imo. I got through the whole level as tiny (or "regular," which is correct I believe) mario and got hit by the random Buzzy Beetle at the end >______> Down to one life here.

7-2: Water level I miraculously survived. I pretty much walked across the bottom of the ocean floor like a boss! I even cracked myself up saying "Bloopa please" in my best italian accent... this is when I realized it was time for bed! About 1:15 at this point, btw.
But yeah, fairly challenging level. Navigating through underwater traffic is fun!

7-3: Another flying Cheep Cheep level! This marks the first time ever that I have beaten both levels of that type without taking a hit. Pretty exciting!

7-4: Where the journey ended. I didn't know the second part of the pattern to get through this castle, and I tried to use the bottom path, which requires you to jump to a narrow platform in the lava that has a firebar directly above it. Mistimed that jumped, and that was the end of that!!

Later this afternoon when I play again, my first attempt will be to go through every level again. That'll be my warm up run, and if I get a game over again I will just warp to World 7 on my next attempt! More to come soon.

World 5

Last no hit world I experienced on playthrough attempt #1.

5-1: Very straightforward. But 'tis a snowy level... awesome :)

5-2: First level with bullet bills and (if I am correct here) first instance of Buzzy Beetles as well!

5-3: A slightly trickier version of 1-3 with bullet bills. No biggie.

5-4: Sooo freaking many firebars* in this castle. The most challenging castle thus far. Still, it's pretty fun to play! Got through this one with no trouble as Fire Mario. Life is good.

World 6

I had six lives starting this level and two lives when I finished it :(

6-1: Night time! :) I wish I was playing the All Stars version of SMB, the backgrounds look pretty great. The trickiest variation of x-1 so far, but still easy. Killed Lakitu for my own entertainment.

6-2: I don't drink, but fun idea for a drinking game: Down a glass every time you see a pipe in this level! Pretty fun level, crapload of piranha plants. A preview of what's to come in SMB3's World 7.

6-3: 5-3 at night, with springs. I must admit, I almost fell to my death here! Thankfully, that was avoided.

6-4: Somehow I died four times on this level, the first time at Bowser. I got hit by a firebar earlier in the level then he got me with a hammer :( After a while I said screw it and ran through the level as tiny mario in about ten seconds... this did involve a good bit of luck, as I almost got hit by a hammer when I jumped for the axe!

Quick recap of World 7 to come, then this topic will be all caught up!

World 4

Another no hit world.

4-1: The introduction of Lakitu! I took him out once or twice, other than that this level is extremely easy.

4-2: Underground level, I just walked above everything (at the top of the screen) for as long as I could. The jump at the end of the level is a little tricky, though- I took my time, making sure I would not mess that up!

4-3: Really quick level. The treetops are now mushrooms! This level is actually really fun to play.

4-4: Ugh, I hate castles that require you to take the right path to proceed, they're a pain if you don't use a guide! Thankfully I remembered how to do this one.

So, World 4 is no more difficult than the first three. Terrific. I also got another extra life here!

SSJ Link: Thank you kind sir

redrocket: Like Jon said we already discussed all this. If/when I finish this project I will probably be moving on to spinoff titles anyways. They're supposed to be great games, platformers where you play as Mario, and I've never played them before.

Ooh, I'm always down for watching people's attempts at playing through this game. I'm going to check that video out!

I made it to 7-4 last night... losing four lives in 6-4 was what did me in! Also, I couldn't remember the stupid path you have to take in 7-4.

I might go through all the levels again, might just warp to World 7, depends on how I'm feeling. But I'll do a big update before I start playing again in a few hours!

pjbasis: I never claimed it was too much of an accomplishment to beat this game... heh. But that is very cool! I would download this game for 3DS if I was an ambassador, but sadly I am not.

Pokalicious: Welcome aboard :) Maybe once I make it to SMB3, if your gaming schedule is not too full, you could rejoin me in this quest!

Ed: Thank you, thank you. Fifteen years later and I finally know the proper name. I will look at that wiki later, if I started now I might not get back to the game!!

Sakurafanboy: There will never be a better time than now to start! It's not a hard game, it's available on many different systems, and as a SMB fan I would love to track your progress. Is anything stopping you?

World 3

I keep thinking, this game is extremely generous with power-ups. That much has yet to change!

3-1: First night level! Awwww yeah. First appearance of Hammer Bros… oh no! First instance of a spring positioned in a place that could potentially result in my death! These are two things that join Bloopers and running under/jumping over Bowser on the list of things I fear. No hits.

3-2: Basically a long straightaway with like thirty enemies. Fire Mario is starting to feel like cheating.

3-3: Ooh, treetops at night. I almost mistimed a jump and plummeted to my doom, thankfully I avoided that!

3-4: My first hit and first death. This level is fun to play, though! I got hit by Bowser’s flames, then had to attempt to jump over him and failed. I got the timing right but landed on the platform above him and when I went to land on the axe, he jumped up and got me! Of course the second time I attempted this level all the pressure was off and I completed it in about thirty seconds. Go figure!

*Firebars, huh? Jumping between the firebars in this level is highly entertaining!

Got another 1-up for 100 coins so I am still sitting at five lives. The next update will come late tomorrow morning, even though I am continuing to play tonight!

World 2

Another extra life, this time from getting 100 coins. No hits. I now have five lives, 43 coins. So far, so good!

2-1: Another fun little level, similar to 1-1 with a few more enemies and jumps. Really simple.

2-2: Oh gosh oh gosh first water level. I’m seriously scared of bloopers, I think this stems from a childhood incident. Got through it by killing as many bloopers as I could with my FIREBALLS OF JUSTICE. In the words of Dory, “just keep swimming, just keep swimming…”

2-3: First flying cheep cheep level. I was 90% sure I would get hit at least once in this level, but surprisingly I did not. Thank goodness.

2-4: Another castle, another chance to destroy Bowser with my fireballs of justice. Had to be patient with some jumps, but other than that this was no challenge at all!

World 3 time...

World 1

Finished with four lives and 62 coins. I didn't take a single hit, and pretty much spammed Fire Mario's fireballs. I even used them to defeat Bowser, because I ALWAYS get nervous jumping over or running under him. I started Lost Levels a few months back and am probably still scarred from that, my heart started beating like crazy and my palms are now sweaty. In freaking World 1 of SMB. Anyways...

1-1: I let the first Goomba live, just because he is near and dear to my heart :) Other Goombas will not be so lucky. Also for some reason I thought that finishing the level with 11 coins and 381 seconds left would net me a 1-up, guess that's only for Lost Levels?

1-2: First underground level, heck yes! Got the 1-up, nothing eventful other than that. I like this level :3

1-3: Treetops... level...? I'm never quite sure what to call this type of level, but they sure get annoying later on when you are dodging bullet bills. I nostalgia'd hard.

1-4: First castle level in the series! I almost got hit by one of those strings of fireballs, whatever they are called. Someone who knows more will come along and correct me!

But yeah, pretty straightforward. World 2 time...

Super Mario Bros. (1985)

Time to get this thing started! I've been gaming for 15 years (almost 20 now) and guess what my very first game was? Oh yes... Super Mario Bros. I have beaten it a few times over the years, but it's such a great game that I saw no point in skipping it. I'll probably be done with this game very quickly, but I plan to take my time and enjoy! If I wanted to rush through all fourteen titles, I could, but my main goal is to enjoy myself and appreciate some awesome games.

~ Brief (in some cases, really brief) commentary on each course and world will likely come as I go. Hopefully this will serve as an adequate warmup before I attempt to beat an infamous game known as The Lost Levels for the first time >_>

~ Playing this on Virtual Console with the Wiimote, which is apparently the way to go if you don't own the original cartridge.

~ I'm going for game completion, when its reasonable. In this case, that means beating all levels. If I get to World 4, then die, I will allow myself to warp back to that world next time I play. However, if I die in 4-4 then I'm not allowed to warp to 5-1. Every world must be completed in one go.
I could beat this game in ten or fifteen minutes with warps... but where's the fun in that?

World 1, let's do this.

Understandable. I've never played either SML game so it was hard for me to know what to do with them! But they are platformers (and not remakes) where you play as Mario, and supposedly great games, so I figured it couldn't hurt to include them!

JonThePenguin, I sent you a friend request (or whatever they call it) on backloggery. I hadn't been on there in ages and apparently I have no games listed whatsoever! Maybe I'll try to get that set up over the weekend. If anyone else uses backloggery, my user name is wallmasterz.

If school permits, I will start Super Mario Bros. this weekend! Who needs to study for finals anyways...

I will definitely check DK '94 out at some point. It looks great, especially for a Gameboy game! This whole project is part of my attempt to get back into gaming, which I've always loved but did very little of in 2011. Every game is fair game- I will play anything!

But it starts with Mario, definitely, and my priority is this project.

I'm probably going to drop the original Mario Bros. because it's not a platformer, and have this be my official list:

1985 Super Mario Bros.
1986 Super Mario Bros.: The Lost Levels
1988 Super Mario Bros. 2
1988 Super Mario Bros. 3
1989 Super Mario Land
1990 Super Mario World
1992 Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins

1996 Super Mario 64
2002 Super Mario Sunshine
2006 New Super Mario Bros.
2007 Super Mario Galaxy
2009 New Super Mario Bros. Wii
2010 Super Mario Galaxy 2
2011 Super Mario 3D Land

14 games, split into two parts. 5 console games and 2 handheld games in each group. I feel like these are the real core games in the series! Everything else I will keep on a recommendation list, based on what has been suggested in this topic.

Edit: I might just go ahead and play DK '94 and post updates in this topic, seperate from the other games! What does everyone think of the 14 game setup?

pjbasis - Thanks for the feedback. Definitely planning on being consistent either way. Problem is a lot of the games ended up resulting in spinoffs (SMW2 to the Yoshi series, SML3 to the Wario series, etc.) and that makes it a little tricky!

JaKyL - Your Lost watchthrough topic was legit. I'd love to discover a new, great game, and although there's no reason to be uber strict with what games I choose, I am going for "Mario purity." I will definitely still check out DK '94, but may save it for another spinoff grouping that would include the Mario vs. DK series, which it obviously inspired!

I already own Lost Levels and attempted it once, got to World 6 before taking a break and never picking it up again. I have it on VC which allows me to start from the beginning of a world once I reach it (get to 2-1 and die, start back at 2-1 with all my lives after getting a game over). I'm not worried about Lost Levels!

And yes, I would be playing through the games in release order. If the 3DS store has Donkey Kong GB, I would consider trying it out, but otherwise I would just be playing the original version. Heck, if it is really that good of a game and people are interested in it, I don't see how that could hurt!

The list needs some fine tuning, and I would love B8's help as I reach a consensus. My goal is to start the journey sometime in the next week or so, since my free time will increase exponentially once I'm done with school for the semester on Tuesday.

If I were to start a topic on here, would there be interest? I wouldn't need a dozen people posting in it regularly, just a couple people to kinda encourage me along. I'd love to get through the whole series but it would certainly take a long time to beat (or especially complete) them all and having others to encourage me would be a big help!

The RPGs are great and some of my favorite games, but I would likely group them up and play all of them at once (SMRPG and both trilogies) as a seperate project. This is already a big enough task as is!

Considering Adding

Donkey Kong
Mario Bros.

(these would be before SMB)

Considering Dropping

Wario Land: SML3
SMW2: Yoshi's Island

I died very quickly with my first life. It's hard to make a lot of those jumps as anything other than regular (small) Mario because you hit the ceiling earlier in your jump.

Life two, I did it! No problems whatsoever. I had to jump over quite a few of Bowser's flames while I stood at the beginning of the bridge and waited for him to get to a place where I could jump over him.

Now, onto World 6!

Yeah, I've heard World 9 is a joke. Can't wait until I get to experience it for myself!

Time to give World 5 another shot...

After about 20 tries, I beat World 4. I was able to clear levels 1-3 without getting hit, but 4-4 proved to be quite tough! Also, there were some gaps I couldn't manage to clear unless I was regular Mario, forcing me to take on the second half of the level (and get past Bowser) without a safety net.

I've already gotten a game over about twenty times whilst attemping to complete World 5. This should be fun!

World 4

I can get through World 4-1 and 4-2 without a game over every time I play. However, I've had to use about a dozen continues on 4-3 because I suck at using those little springs! I finally got the timing down, and I almost beat 4-3 for the first time last night. Today I'm hoping to clear World 4, but after seeing a video of 4-4 I'm not counting on it.

Okay, so basically as far as I can tell World 4-4 is from the pits of hell.

Got through World 3 without any problems, didn't have to use a continue once :)

Now World 4 is going to be a royal pain. I honestly believe it might be the main obstacle between me and completion of this game. World 4-3 requires you to be PERFECT at using springs, which I kind of suck at doing right now.

Any tips on using springs (and getting the timing down) from those of you who have beaten the game before?

Back to World 3, as Mario. Pretty smooth sailing thus far.

Woah, I almost made it Relient k! I saw a status on fb the other day that said "let's get emotional girls to all wear mood rings..."

But yeah, I opted not to go with Relient k 'cause I thought the topic would quickly turn into "lolol semi-christian music!"

I think I'm going to turn this into a playthrough topic. After accidentally resetting instead of continuing, I'm back at 1-1 >_>

I just got done completing SMB, with very little excitement involved. It was just a great, nostalgia filled trip and the first video game I've beaten (or even had a serious playing session with) all year. Step 2 on my journey to beat all the "main" Mario games is The Lost Levels.

This will be fun. My hope is that I'll be able to complete the game with Mario and Luigi, as well as complete the secret worlds, but I might just settle for beating it once. Also, since you have to beat the game eight times to access Worlds A-D I'll definitely be using warps for six of those playthroughs.

This is on the Wii's Virtual Console. I don't think I would be able to do it, except that (at least in this particular version) when you game over you get the option to continue at the beginning of the world you died in. So even though I've run out of lives three or four times in World 4, I get to start at 4-1 as long as I keep choosing the "continue" option.

Probably just going to play through it straight (no warps) one time, just so I can access and hopefully beat World 9.

I'm playing through all of the main games in the Mario series and just finished Super Mario Bros. last night. I decided to download The Lost Levels on the Virtual Console, since I had never played the game before.

After a couple hours and more than a couple trips to the game over screen, I've reached World 4. Who here has managed to beat it?
