NOODLES! ROAMIN' OFF!
"I don't think I've ever met a noodling tycoon in my life!"
Score: 7.5/10

Well. There's a sentence that will never be said ever again.

The heroes are walking through a forest on a clear, sunny day (remember one episode ago when it was cold and there was a blizzard?) when Team Rocket appears. Ash doesn't feel like fighting, so he just has Pikachu blast them off in one second. Admittedly funny. Jessie and Meowth are disturbed by how easily they were defeated, but James is still in a good mood, so they decide to beat the heroes to the next town. They find a noodle shop, and since they're broke, they decide to eat and run. Just as they attempt to escape, who should appear but the heroes, coming into the exact same noodle shop and inadvertently preventing their escape.

Because they were delayed, the chef calls Team Rocket into the kitchen. He turns out to not be angry with them; he's actually Christopher. Remember him? No. Good, because for a moment I was afraid I was supposed to already know who this was. Christopher was a student at the Team Rocket Training School (also known as the “Mafia for Tykes” school, I guess), and Jessie and James were always there to help him out despite his lameness. He quit Team Rocket for unrelated reasons and opened a noodle shop, and somehow Jessie and James failed to notice that he'd named the place "Jessie and James' Noodle Shop." He offers to let them eat as much as they want for no cost, and the trio is excited by the news.

Another chef fumbles and throws some noodles at Meowth, who reacts by cutting them up in midair. They fall into a conveniently placed bowl that wasn't there a second ago, and Christopher realizes Meowth has The Gift™ of noodle making. After seeing Meowth make one bowl of noodles, Christopher is interested in letting Meowth take over for him after he retires... Despite Christopher being like eighteen and Meowth being a pokemon, which means Meowth will no doubt die well before ah screw it.
external image
Jessie and James don't want to let Meowth go, and despite his wanting to join the noodle shop, however, so Meowth stays with them. Later, Team Rocket attacks the heroes with a giant robot, and despite their proofing their giant robots against electricity as far back as the early part of season 1 (in fact, it was actually a plot point in the episodes they didn't electric-proof their robots), this robot is vulnerable to electricity and almost immediately explodes. Jessie and James criticize Meowth for the failure, so Meowth finally gets angry enough to quit Team Rocket entirely.

Later that day, Jessie decides to quit Team Rocket as well and focus on her contest dreams. She bids James goodbye and tells him to consider going back to his rich parents and fiance. James, however, refuses to give up on his dream of being a success in Team Rocket because… well, because, I guess.

At night, James sneaks up on the heroes and hears a conversation about the "differently-colored Metagross on the Rocky Mountain not that far from here," so he of course runs there immediately, thus missing Dawn's line about how the Metagross is incredibly aggressive and seriously hurts any humans near it.

In the morning, James climbs up the mountain, announcing his plan to... the rocks, I guess. He will capture Metagross and tell Giovanni that it was a triple effort, and faced with success, Jessie and Meowth will come back. Two guys see James go up the mountain and, hours later, happen near Jessie, where they're still talking about the dumbass with the "big red R on the front of his shirt" who's going to get hurt or killed by the Metagross. Upon learning that James is in danger, Jessie goes to Meowth to ask for help. Meowth won't even listen to her, however, so she instead just wishes him luck and runs off.

James finds Metagross easily, and to battle a Metagross, he sends out Mime Jr. Predictably, James gets completely destroyed, but Jessie shows up and helps out by having Seviper use poison tail on a steel pokemon. Just as they start to think Metagross will lose, it uses its supercomputer processing abilities (which, to be fair, actually are a part of its pokedex entry) to calculate the best way to kick their asses.
external image

Metagross is about to kill Jessie and James when we cut to Meowth still in the noodle shop. He thinks about all of the good times he had with Jessie and James just as the two guys who were talking about James earlier come in for some noodles. They're apparently still talking about James, and now also Jessie, whom they say will get messed up bad in the same tone of voice you'd use to say that you got an A- on your history test.

Fortunately, Meowth teleports to the mountain, I guess, and launches a freaking RPG at Metagross and saves the day, so that Metagross is forced to blast them off instead of murdering them brutally. The trio decide to stick together, and that’s that.

A solid episode, actually. There are some inconsistencies, but as I’ve said before, Team Rocket-centric episodes tend to be better than episodes about the heroes.

To this day, I have trouble with this episode for that reason. The best I figure, aside from the characters misjudging the threat, is that it's some kind of Last Action Hero-esque plot point that once the three members are back together, they qualify as comic relief and thus can survive a vicious attack.
On the brighter side, a TR episode I enjoy more will build upon some of the minor plot points in this episode (at least if you overthink it), so it's satisfying continuity-wise.

No, because Jessie and Meowth have been blasted off without James multiple times, and James has been blasted off without them. I guess you could claim that Metagross just misaimed and the explosion propelled them away instead of connecting directly, but since Team Rocket is the group that frequently breaks the fourth wall ("We've been after Pikachu since before you were born" to Dawn, eleven seasons into the show), the real explanation is that they're blasting off agaaaaaaaaain.

The worst part about the BW anime is that they stripped Team Rocket of their personalities. Which is strange, since the best part about the BW anime is that they stopped shoehorning Team Rocket into every episode...

PURSUING A LOFTY GOAL!
"How could he think encouragement would do a thing?"
Score: 7/10

The heroes arrive at Squallville, where the orphanages are always-- oh, whatever. A gust of wind hits the heroes, and Brock explains that this city is known for having strong, random winds. They see a game of pokeringer in action. Remember pokeringer? The thing where two trainers have their pokemon go after a ring held by a balloon, then place the ring a hook on the ground to see who wins? One of the contestants is James, using Jessie's Yanmega, but because of his disguise of a pair of sunglasses, the heroes can't tell who he is. At least this time even James is surprised they don't recognize him.

There's a pokeringer competition today, and Piplup is disappointed to learn that it can't enter. Ash, however, decides to enter with Pidgeot. I mean Noctowl. I mean Swellow. I mean Unfezant. I mean Butterfree. I meant Gliscor. I mean Beedrill. I mean Glalie. I mean Charizard. I mean Staravia.

Ash is up against Taylor. You know Taylor, he’s the guy who’s so important that he’s ever shown up before. Staravia versus Skarmory. Ash almost loses, but a random gust of wind saves Staravia.

A guy named Provo is up next. You just know Provo is serious; he has an Australian accent and is dressed like an extra from Road Warrior. His enemy? Paul. Ash says hi to Paul, and is somehow surprised by him being a jerk. I just-- I just don't understand why Ash is surprised here. Paul's Honchkrow versus Provo's Dragonite. Honchkrow is about to lose when Paul divines a wind gust about to hit, and is able to use it to his advantage. I like how Ash and Paul win for the same reason, but one does it with skill and the other with luck.

James versus Stevelin, a small boy. Is that even a real name? Well, Yanmega versus Skiploom. Neither trainer orders his pokemon to do anything because they both want to wait for proper wind gusts. James misreads a wind current and loses easily, and the episode really plays up Stevelin actually being really skilled and knowing what he’s doing, which it makes it weird that he never shows up again and is (presumably) defeated off screen.

The finalists are Ash and Paul. Also: in a contest where it's so hard to read the wind that even James, who trained for this kind of thing, can't do it, how do Ash and Paul succeed?

Staravia versus Honchkrow. Staravia puts up a good fight, but gets its ass destroyed because it’s slower and weaker than its enemy. Even though Honchkrow is actually slow for a flying pokemon and Staravia is not. Well, whatever. Staravia tries to keep up with quick attack, but eventually Paul learns how to counter it, and Staravia gets its assed kicked again. Finally, Staravia says “screw it” and evolves to help the episode end faster. Honestly, just once, I'd like a main character's pokemon to evolve in an undramatic way. Like Ash is just walking along and coughs, and for whatever reason, Cyndaquil up and evolves. Or maybe Squirtle defeats a random trainer’s Metapod and evolves because of it. Just once, you know?

With its newfound speed and power, Staraptor-- gets its ass kicked. However, it learns close combat, which "is super effective against dark-types like Honchkrow." Well, no. Not dark types like Honchkrow, which is part flying. Anyway, the heroic music starts playing, so even though Paul is technically still in the match, it's over. In a dramatic turn of events, Staraptor punches the ring to the hook, which no one expected because you're normally supposed to use your beak. I admit, that’s actually kind of clever. What’s hilarious is that Ash doesn’t order it, Staraptor does it on its own, so I can only assume that Ash’s pet bird is smarter than he is, which-- actually makes a lot of sense.

Paul berates Honchkrow for losing and leaves. The heroes are awarded a year's supply of pokemon food, which Mamoswine steals in about three seconds. Who determines what a “year’s supply” is, anyway? A year’s supply for a Weedle? A year’s supply for a Blastoise? I can only assume that the latter eats more than the former…

As Paul leaves, Ash points out that he abandoned this Staraptor when it was a Starly, and now it's powerful and cool, aren’t you jealous man I’m so awesome now that I have a Staraptor. Paul pretends to remain unimpressed while secretly, deep down, he remains unimpressed.

By the way, Staraptor is larger than Brock, so Ash should logically be able to fly using it. I'm sure this will not be forgotten about by the writers, like they did with Charizard.

I'm sure.

Actually a decent episode, but I have nothing really to say about it.

This is actually a decent episode that actually has continuity with previous episodes, but in the end, it’s just Charizard Chills with Mamoswine and Dawn instead of Charizard and Ash.

Jeez fine it's not like I died for your sins or something

TRIALS AND ADULATIONS!
"We've run out of places to run!"
Score: 7/10

Dawn wanders off by herself and gets attacked by a wild Aggron. She slips into a river, and by the time she escapes the flow she's been separated by quite some distance. Dawn checks her pokedex for information on Aggron, and is astounded to learn that life exists that eats iron.

Welp.

Meanwhile, Ash and Brock realize Dawn has fallen into the river and get attacked by the same Aggron, so they run away like the heroes they are instead of just having Staraptor use close combat on a pokemon that’s x4 weak to it. Brock realizes that there's iron in the boulders near the river, so it's probably just protecting its territory (someone probably wrote this in after his internet creative writing 101 course mentioned that antagonists are supposed to have motives). Ash sends out his flying pokemon to search for Dawn while he and Brock... search for her on foot.

Team Rocket attacks Dawn, but when Aggron appears, Dawn just runs away and leaves Team Rocket to be murdered. Jessie doesn't recognize Aggron even though she's encountered them before.

Dawn eventually finds an open spot, so she tells Pachirisu and Buneary to aim ice beam and discharge at the sky to attract attention. Even though there's also an Aggron and Team Rocket looking for-- and of course Aggron shows up five seconds later (by the way, Ash, Brock, Staraptor, and Gliscor, the latter two who are in the air, all miss the attacks).

It corners her, and realizing that she can't run and must fight, sends out Mamoswine. Who ignores her order to use take down on a pokemon x4 resistant to normal damage. Eventually Mamoswine agrees to fight Aggron, but it just gets its ass kicked. Dawn and her pokemon slide down a cliff, and while they're safe from Aggron, Mamoswine is seriously injured and Dawn lost its pokeball during the fall. Dawn decides the only solution is to hide Mamoswine under several dozen branches because, well, why not? Dawn is so worried that she resorts to continuity, and has a flashback to when Pachirisu got sick. She then has a flashback to a scene that never happened where Brock explains what kinds of plants can ease pain, gathers some, and blahblahblah next several minutes are Dawn and her pokemon taking care of Mamoswine.

The next day, Team Rocket finds Mamoswine, and Dawn tells them to go away. Amazingly, this demand us not heeded, but Mamoswine is now better and ready to-- oh, Ash and Brock show up and blast Team Rocket off. Well, at least Aggron appears, and Mamoswine now wants to battle Aggron together instead of just having Staraptor use close combat on the x4 weak pokemon and murder it. Following Dawn's orders allows Mamoswine to win a close battle, and the episode ends as it begins: with me pressing the power button on my laptop to put it into hibernation mode.

Well, at least Aggron appears, and Mamoswine now wants to battle Aggron together instead of just having Staraptor use close combat on the x4 weak pokemon and murder it.

Staraptor's Close Combat: Base Power 120 * 2 (Fighting move vs. Rock-type) * 2 (Fighting-type move vs. Steel-type) = 480 power

Mamoswine's Dig (the only Ground-type move it's been shown to know): Base Power 80 * 2 (Ground-type move vs. Rock-type) * 2 (Ground-type move vs. Steel-type) * 1.5 (Ground-type move used by Ground-type Pokémon) = 480 power.

And Mamoswine's base Attack is 130 to Staraptor's 120. We don't know what their respective levels are, but Staraptor just evolved from a Staravia so it's probably in the mid-30s--or about equal to Mamoswine, who is also recently evolved and evolved to Mamoswine almost immediately after evolving to Piloswine--which happens just one level lower than Staravia's evolution to Staraptor.

"But wait! Mamoswine didn't use Dig! It just used Ice Shard and Ancientpower!" Well, yeah. Dawn's a coordinator, not a trainer, which means that Ash's Staraptor using Close Combat would've been a better move than what she actually did. But not using Staraptor wasn't necessarily the wrong decision; Mamoswine could've hit a 4x weakness as well and done so with a STAB bonus to boot.

OR MAYBE SO

SHISHISHAW

THE LONELY SNOVER!
"Isn't that just like a twerp, to be in denial? When it comes to Snover Berries, we're masters of guile!"
Score: 3/10

Ash stops for some training in a forest, during which he tells Grotle to dodge a flamethrower. Even though Grotle had an entire episode about how it can't dodge and needs to just tank things. As they train, a wild Snover freezes everyone at once, but Chimchar escapes the ice and frees everyone else. No one sees Snover, however. The heroes continue on, and Snover uses grass knot from behind a bush to make everyone trip. They try to approach it, so it traps them all in vines using ingrain. Ash has Grotle free everyone, so it just uses grass whistle to put everyone to sleep. Then it wakes everyone up and offers them some of the berries that grow on its body, called “snover berries,” which are apparently delicious. Brock decides that Snover forced everyone to stop using its moves to ask them to try out the food.

Snover decides to hang out with the heroes for the rest of the day, and at night, it celebrates being part of the gang the same way the rest of the gang does: by getting kidnapped by, and rescued from, Team Rocket. I especially like how the heroes wake up as Snover is kidnapped; they’re in their pajamas, but in the next shot, they’re in their regular clothes, so apparently, they decided that getting dressed was more important than immediately acting to help Snover. By the way, it’s Grotle who saves Snover here, and we get a little scene as they strike up a friendship.

The next day, Grotle has sprouted nuts on its back, and wild pokemon come start having some. Don’t worry; this has no significance at all. Team Rocket shows up again and steals Snover, so Grotle up and learns rock climb to jump three hundred feet into the air and pop their balloon.

As the heroes continue on their path, a teacher and some kids show up and start playing with Snover. Snover gives them one of the berries (split literally six ways) and they fall in love with it, so everyone decides it would be a great idea if Snover stays with them. The teacher tells the heroes that a contest is taking place in Sandlestraw Town, conveniently located only one episode out of their way, so they decide to stop there before advancing the A-plot.

That episode has one of the most egregious examples of Ash failing to catch a Pokemon I've ever seen.
The Snover was practically asking to go with him. Ash never even considered getting out a Pokeball.

(It's not like it hangs out with a Bagon or Gligar.)

Yeah, there was really no excuse this time, but at least he found Snover a home, I guess.

Oh wow. I was confusing Snover with Snorunt and wondered why the hell he would need another one.
