Slight edge to Metroid. People who put SOTN over Super Metroid are wrong. SOTN has too steep of a drop off at the halfway mark to be up there above Super Metroid.

My favourite death metal band right now is probably Gojira and they go against what I said before. Deathcore and metalcore has been a mainstream entry point for over a decade. But Gojira still feels like they pull more from Metallica / Pantera / old school death. They were death metal that got filtered into stadium groove metal. They were also started in the 90's and their trajectory is quite a bit different from the 2000's bands.

Yeah or other stuff like Bring Me the Horizon. They started as deathcore and continue to pivot on each release it seems like.

Deathcore is probably the more prominent subgenre over the old style death metal. Which makes sense. Thrash and old school death are boomer genres now. Not that there's anything wrong with that. But now bands today are being fed through the filter of Slipknot, Linkin Park and bands of the last 20 to 25 years versus being inspired by the traditional stuff like the older generation was.
