People who say there was nothing in common with the actual Joker character are partially wrong. In his first appearances, the Joker was a weirdo and not necessarily a clownish guy. "Do what I say or this guy dies in X hours" was how he operated in his first appearance in 1940. Issuing ultimatums and then dishing out chaos sounds like Ledger to me.

It's a damn shame that Comedy Central doesn't have a show like Tough Crowd With Colin Quinn anymore. Check out some clips on Youtube for uncensored funny back and forths between funny comics. The network would never dream to air a show like it in this climate.

It's sort of a progenitor or prototype of the whole comedy podcast scene in NY and LA. Uncensored talk between funny mother effers.

Bottomline: having a platform where any dumb thought can be aired is better than the current TV platforms where lefty hosts and comics shout down at half the population for saying certain things. I'd rather hear dumb controversial thoughts (and maybe smart thoughts) and perhaps a funny dick joke or AIDS joke tossed in rather than the blathering of stupid Oliver / Colbert / Kimmel.

Because conservatives aren't funny and conservative "humor" is mean-spirited to the point where it's uncomfortable

Dennis Miller was funny in the 80's according to what I've heard from comedians talking on podcasts, but the guy is now a cranky Fox News pundit who embarrassed himself in the Michelle Wolf situation. I'll agree on that one.

Nick Di Paolo is a righty and is funnier than most of the big name darling left wing comedians. By that category, I'm talking the Aziz's and Schumer's of the world = the comedians that non-comedy fans can name. Radio guy Anthony Cumia is a righty but is one of the funniest and quickest wits in the podcast / internet radio game. Those are exceptions, but the funniest guys tend to be somewhere near the centre, but lean slightly liberally when it comes to social issues.

A guy like Bill Burr is equally comfortable attacking both sides. Dave Chappelle may have blasted Trump, but he also gave a beating to #MeToo. Jim Norton will blast both sides. Hicks and Carlin (RIP both) did the same. The best comics know how to stride the line. They don't join sides.

Bomb the Music Industry! said it best.

Every Fugazi record has a catalog number and a price tag and every independent label is selling you another goddamn product.

True. And funnily enough for all the crap that Kurt talked about Pearl Jam and their so-called "selling out" or playing to the mainstream, Pearl Jam actually made NO MUSIC VIDEOS on their second album, whereas Nirvana made at least one video for their 3rd, In Utero (Heart Shaped Box). PJ outsold Nirvana between those 2 albums (7x platinum versus 5x platinum). Crazy!

Pearl Jam took Ticketmaster to court in 1995 over their concert fees and now I'm certain that they've used the service for the last number of years. Rock bands are strange.

Interesting sidenot, but as big as that whole Nirvana / Pearl Jam "grunge" and "alternative nation" thing was between 91 and 95 or 96, funnily enough, the old bro band Metallica was monstrous during the peak alternative rock years. That band defied all the other 80's bands because they were authentic and had their own sound and slowly cultivated their following until it resulted in arena and stadium tours and hit singles / videos. They never stayed on trend, they CREATED their own trends. Their 5th album is the highest selling album since they started tracking sales in 1991.

Always a weird fact because it seems like Nirvana's 2nd album or Pearl Jam's 1st would have been a likelier candidate to be a bigger seller. I think each band got fazed big time by the immediate pressure placed on themselves. Metallica had been playing for about 10 years by the time they got the Nirvana-fame. It must be insane to go from club shows in front of a few hundred fans to playing 50,000 people festivals in a 6-12 month span.

As you can tell, I love this period of music a lot.

Not much to explain, except that the riff is killer, the drum track is sick, the production on that song and album are amazing, and the singing style was different at that point. It was basically a huge homerun for MTV heading into the 90's. They found their new marketing superstars and got kids to buy into it. Kurt was a gorgeous dude. The others would follow (Chris Cornell, Eddie Vedder, etc.) Build a movement around it, and you got a new product to sell to the biggest teenage demographic ever (Gen X are the kids of the Baby Boomers). Record amount of teens = huge amounts of disposable income = pump out more young bands = $$$

In large part, the underground stars of the late 80's (ie. REM, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Nine Inch Nails, Jane's Addiction) became the new mainstream stars of the early 90's. The old guard bands either fizzled out (Guns 'N Roses) or got mostly pushed out, and obviously some of the older stuff has stuck around (ie. Springsteen, U2, Bon Jovi, etc).

The good news is that the best rock music from the early 90's is still awesome. Generally speaking, just a bunch of great bands that honed themselves underground in the 80's and then went on to mature themselves and put out classics in the 90's. Nirvana included.
