I'd certainly be interested in hearing whatever vocalist you think can top Ramos. Acceptable answers include Ben Duerr.

I'm guessing a draw of what makes Ramos so revered is he seems to have range others don't with harsh vocals.

In that case, Matt Chalk formerly of Psycroptic should be someone that will be appreciated.

https://youtu.be/IhBuCy1PAGk

I will say that perhaps my general dislike of deathcore might color my perception of Ramos negatively somewhat. I don't think he's bad at all though.

Mentioned earlier that my favorites are Daniel Corchado of The Chasm and Tomas Lindberg of At the Gates (specifically pre-Terminal Spirit Disease anyways.)

Also really fucking love Alexander Nordgaren's performance on Fleurrty's A Darker Shade of Evil.

https://youtu.be/XmvPnOKL-Ok

He absolutely wrecked his vocal chords with this though.

And I completely get it, theres a lot of bad deathcore that all sounds the same, and the good is still very subjective

I mean, Lorna Shore has really boring songwriting but Ramos' range and power is impressive and the fact that he can also do it all live as well.

Tbh, most death metal has very boring, monotone vocals. Deathcore and slam is where all the interesting vocal techniques are.

The guy from Vulvodynia, for example, has a pretty good range and uses a nice mixture of techniques.

Like this Psycroptic song isn't necessarily the best example because it's mixing is muddied and you can't really hear anything clean.

It feels so weirdly disconnected from the rest of metal, too

like most people Ive met who are deathcore guys literally only listen to deathcore

I also don't think interesting/varied technique really means much to me. Martin Van Drunen of Asphyx/Pestilence/Hail of Bullets basically does one thing and does that one thing really fucking well.

https://youtu.be/_989cFyAiAw

I think generally it's the same thing behind why I don't really care for technical or progressive focused bands. Like yeah, you can play complicated stuff but it's not doing anything for me.

I feel like every genre just attaches the "kid" suffex to everything. Like, if you hear anyone talk about When We Were Young Fest, they're going to say "This is for all the emo kids" meanwhile the average age of the concert goer is going to be near 30.

I genuinely tried to give Lorna Shore a shot because I listen to a huge variety of music and try to stay agnostic when it comes to genre and how mainstream something is

but I found it really off putting in a way I cant quite articulate. Like on a surface level its heavy, with the vocals and the blast beats and all, but at the same time its so cookie cutter and the riffs are obviously written with a radio/mainstream audience in mind.

and I like plenty of radio metal like Lamb of God, Mastodon, Gojira, Avenged Sevenfold but something about the way Lorna Shore presents themselves as this super heavy/hardcore band with fans who hype up how brutal and unique this is (in the YouTube comments) while actually just playing pretty typical radio-courting deathcore just rubs me the wrong way

idk man maybe its elitism but, its definitely not for me

sidenote Cattle Decapitation fuckin rules, but also theyre not deathcore so idk what that has to do with anything

Outside of that one metal channel on Sirius, and college radio stations, what radio stations are playing deathcore lol? Not even trying to be a dick, I'm legit curious, because I've straight up never heard a deathcore band on even the heaviest of rock stations (Usually the heaviest they go is something like Rise Against, or BfmV).

Lorna Shore's songs are all just very formulaic. The guitarist only knows like five notes and his riffs are composed of him just jumping back and forth between all of them, drummer is always blasting away at 300+ BPM, the vocalist always has something to growl 1 minute and 20 seconds into the song, right before the music cuts off and into a breakdown. Then a bigger breakdown at the end of the song. You hear one song, you don't need to hear any other ones cause they're the exact same.

Also I just threw CD in there as an example of vocalists who've been doing absolutely wild shit for decades but get no recognition, not because I think they're Deathcore. I know they're not Deathcore.

They get some play on my local rock/metal station

also I dont think actual radio is really relevant anymore so I meant radio-courting less as specifically meaning radio and more just a generally mass-appeal sound (as mass appeal as something with harsh vocals can be)

Ah fair enough.

Don't know if I'd consider Lorna Shore to have mass appeal though, Chelsea Grin fits that mold more IMO. Lorna was pretty underground until they became a viral trend because of Will's vocals.

My friend and I have this joke, we say that if you open up Pro Tools and stack all 3 Lorna Shore tracks from their last EP together on top of each other, it's going to sound like one complete, clean song.

Same friend and I saw Lorna Shore last week at Lollapalooza. Again, I am not a Deathcore hater, I listen to it frequently, but that shouldn't mean I am not allowed to shit on it.

Nah when he was in rehab him and Ben had a falling out, so Dennis from Make Me Famous was their vocalist for a bit. Then Dennis fucked them over (Like he does to every band he's in) so once Danny was clean he rejoined them. Modern AA is too radio rock for my taste, but I love to see the man back on his feet.

Oh wow so I had to Google this, Denis Stoff is his name, he was in the band for almost two years and they have one album together. That's completely news to me. I thought it would be like a Jerry Roush/OM&M situation where they just toured for a couple months before bringing back the old vocalist. But a whole album together? Yeah I haven't paid attention to AA since I was like 14, in my mind they have one great album then they fiddled around with trying to be Radio Rock for a decade and somewhere in between Danny became a cowboy. They're all probably alcoholics still. I remember seeing them live before the release of R&R and they were wasted, probably the worst set I've ever seen. Stopped following them since then and went from being an entry-level Metalcore/Post-Hardcore/Deathcore kid to like Technical Death Metal and Slam guy.
