Regardless, I really appreciate when people open the floodgates to actively engage music they may not necessarily like just to better understand their own tastes and others' tastes. | tazzyboyishere 05/21/21 8:50:25 PM #65 | So I haven't really been writing about anything since the overall field I've listened to hasn't really done much for me and I feel like I've just been latching onto 14.3 Billion Years' inclusion as inspiration to continue. If it endsup losing, I doubt I stay voting, but in some holier than thou kind of way, just that I'm already aware I'm a significant outlier in taste, so losing my number 1 early would kinda blow. Regardless, this is my favorite VG track and I just feel like talking about how much it means to me. I played Outer Wilds at a very shitty point in my life where I was fearing many unknowns I had no control over. Funnily enough, Outer Wilds heavily explores the themes of carrying on despite the unknowns we can't control. The ending was so enormously powerful to me in how it begs the player to seek acceptance in spite of tragedy, and that the natural course of the universe is immensely beautiful, despite how little we all are prepared to face our own end. 14.3 Billion Years is the culmination of all the game teaches. It warps the joyous main theme you've been hearing all game into something far more deliberate and melancholy. Just as the game starts off as a happy-go-lucky space adventure, it quickly turns into something far more fearsome. But the game never asks you to fixate on these unknowns. It adamantly objects to fear and anxiety. 14.3 Billion Years condenses the entire journey into a little over 5 minutes and the way it progresses is so utterly beautiful. I get actual goosebumps as I listen to this song and remember how much both it and the game it comes from mean to me. My favorite part is when it briefly melts into this spacey atmospheric piece at 2:15. It's intimidating and hard to tell where the song will go as the strings continue to swell to the point where they almost sound like they'll explode, only to softly drop back to reality and be utterly destroyed by one of the most powerful and moving verses ever composed at 3:23. Maybe it meanders a bit too much at the end but it's hard to mark it for that. Anyway, I'm really glad it got in after I failed to find support for it last year. I kinda missed the boat on noms this year and had no set gameplan so I'm glad it worked out to at least get my favorite in. It appears to be doing well despite my concerns it wasn't really the kind of song that would have any legs in this era of VGMC where it seems none of my favorites do well.
