what other improvements over the graphics are there?

• AI now respects Fog of War. Biggest change by far and should make the Challenge Campaign much more manageable. So many maps previously relied on exploiting the AI to win because of how blatant the cheating was.
• "Two-Week Test" has been fixed. You now have to win the mission normally instead of just building nothing, because this time the AI will make sure to capture your HQ. Granted this exploit wasn't known at the time of the game's release and the mission isn't all that hard to begin with.
• The AI will now notice if you're capturing their HQ and will attack them over that APC sitting there doing nothing. Otherwise you can still exploit them heavily by building transport units. I believe they also prioritize any units capturing buildings now as well, not just HQ.
• Unlocking units for the other modes is way easier. AW1 specifically required at least three play-throughs of Campaign + Advance Campaign. Now you just unlock COs as the story progresses, or from doing all the missions at least once. And because this is a bundle, you unlock all the "old" COs in AW1 and all the "new" ones in AW2. (Obviously before, you had to unlock the COs twice because they were physically different games).
• Tying into the above, there are no more "secret" missions. All the missions in AW1 that required specific knowledge of what to do to access them are now just done in a linear fashion like any other. This changes the final battle, you can now pick any CO, and also means "Rivals" is just another mission that you can do postgame. AW2 still lets you skip the Neotank missions if you want, but you can go back and get them later on if you want.
• You can hold down ZR to fast-forward. You can also now click on any unit and immediately attack it instead of having to first move the unit over and attack.
• You can rewind the current turn. No limit to how often you can do this, but unlike Fire Emblem, you can't rewind all the way to the beginning. This isn't very useful for the most part, although it can be useful during FoW if want to know where certain enemy units are.
