https://sports.yahoo.com/eagles-qb-jalen-hurts-agree-to-5-year-contract-extension-reportedly-worth-255m-151454091.html

Quarterback Jalen Hurts is going to be under center for the Philadelphia Eagles for a long time. According to multiple sources and confirmed by Yahoo Sports' Jori Epstein, Hurts and the Eagles have agreed to a five-year, $255 million contract that will keep him in Philadelphia through the 2028 season. The contract also includes over $179 million in guarantees, and will make Hurts the highest-paid player in NFL history. The Eagles announced the extension, but did not reveal any other details about the contract.

The $179.3 million in guaranteed money is the second-most in league history behind Deshaun Watson's contract with the Cleveland Browns. And Hurts' agent, Nicole Lynn, also negotiated a no-trade clause, a first for this kind of contract.

There have been legendary dudes who have had shitty post-career lives due to injuries and drugs sustained by the sport so whatever get paid while on top.

On the flipside, football sucks hard now because of these insane salaries handicapping rosters.

How can one dude be worth that much? Do they even have advanced stats in NFL? What's replacement level value? What's a win worth?

I mean you say this when they still dont even make a fraction of what the owners are worth. Not to mention most contracts arent even guaranteed. So youll see these numbers and most of the time the players dont even see all of that.

People try to make individual NFL contract negotiations into "owner vs player" conversations, but the owner is going to pay (close to) the salary cap every year*. Jalen Hurts making $2 million means that other Eagles players make $2 million less collectively.

Now, I don't think he's in any way obligated to care about that, I just don't see it as much as a win over management or anything like that. This problem would also still exist even if the revenue split was a lot more friendly to players (instead of 48.8% that it is now), because the big contracts aren't structured around any sort of need or necessity but just "what am I able to get paid" (i.e. in a world with a 97.6% revenue split for players, Jalen Hurts is likely just demanding $510 million instead).

(* I know there are funny money calculations with pushing the cap around, guarantees vs not, etc. but the general principle is correct)

Caitlin Clark was declared best women's ncaa basketball player of the season, and she was in the final but her team lost. But she still is the best player. Sometimes 1 player can't win a game, no matter how good they are. The rest of the team has to pull their weight

there are a lot better metrics to measure production nowadays then worthless volume stats, but in terms of being able to quantify how much value an individual player is worth there still isn't really anything worthwhile. teams know more how to value positions, which is why QB's are the only ones that get deals like this

It's a positional thing. At any given time there's only 25ish "Good" QBs. The rest are mediocre or suck.

You have 3-4 enter every year and in a good year 2 of those guys will fall into the "Good" category.

There's 32 teams. So if you get your guy you pay him bc someone else will.

There is no replacement level stat and a win is worth A TON more than in any other sport bc you only play 17 games and playoffs are single elimination. Add in a QB runs your entire offense and the only person who touches the ball more...is your center.

So yeah...thats why. It's a completely different sport than Baseball.
