It makes sense because Hell is said to be pretty difficult to escape. It's also not a place you want to go back to, so most demons would probably keep a low profile. Possessing a member of a hunter family, one of the few types of people that know how to get rid of you, is kind of the opposite of a low profile. Obviously, this changes later on and possession becomes almost ridiculously commonplace, but it jives with the fact that the bad guys want more soldiers on the ground.
