What I meant was everything pre-Duelist Alliance (Aug 2014).

That works I guess. It does cut off things like Burning Abyss, which I would very much consider an XYZ era deck, as well as a bunch of Stellarknight stuff and staples of the era like Castel and Dark Rebellion XYZ Dragon. A lot of Utopia stuff came out in New Challengers as well.

How far does XYZ Era go though?

This is an interesting question. I'm not sure I would limit the XYZ Era to, "anytime before Pendulums", because XYZ was still an integral part of the game post-pendulums. I'd probably say anytime before Link Summoning, and also say that you can't use Pendulums, which will still give access to the XYZ cards of the era while not going against the spirit of the tournament, but anything is fine with me.

Alright I'm back from vacation.

Definitely like the idea of the rarity lock and the no rarity limit. Not as interested in randomizer as I don't think I'll have any fun with it. The deck building process is a huge part of the intrigue for me in these alternative formats.

Sundays should work for me going forward, but I'll probably be more sporadically available throughout the day as opposed to locked in for the entirety of it, as Sundays are the days where I catch up on work for the week.

If any of these teams were smart they'd get a stud QB in Gardner Minshew.

I've heard that you can now demote from Plat 1, but I haven't seen that yet. At one point I was on a 4 game losing streak and nothing happened.

I remember in the first season, before they made the change, people were getting demoted back to Plat 2 after 1-2 losses.

I'd love to play them in an alternative format tournament for sure.

I was kind of interested in Six Sams until I found out that at the top end they're one of those decks that has 15 minute first turns, so I changed my mind on that pretty quickly.

Heros stalled out in Plat so I switched over to Tri-Brigade and climbed pretty easily back to Plat 1.

Time to relax and do daily missions for the rest of the month.

Alright I'm back into Plat. Final duel was against an Eldlich deck, which made it even more sweet to get the W.

One of the worst months ever for me in terms of trophies. I've been playing Master Duel and almost nothing else.

As a heads up, I won't be available the weekend of the 12th-13th as I'll be away on vacation, so I'll have to get in on the next one.

I'd be down to help anyone with some testing leading up to it, though.

Synchro/XYZ Era - Pool of allowed cards limited to Synchro Era (everything up to ~August 2011/before XYZ) or XYZ Era (everything up to ~August 2014/before Pendulum). What I would personally have the most long-term interest in since there's a lot of decks from around this time I want to play with. Of course, the potential resources needed might be a deterrent for people.

This is the one that interests me the most, for sure. I think there is value to having an expanded card pool in a limited format. I know some aren't a huge fan of specific formats, but there is something similar to Goat format called Edison format that captures this period in time pretty well.

In terms of rarity lock for all cards, that's also fine, but there are legit meta decks available right now with only N/R cards, like Phantasm Spiral, so those would dominate there.

I essentially dust anything SR/UR that's unplayable. I use MasterDuelMeta that has playrates for everything. If a card I search up comes up blank, it's an easy dust.

I've played against Doomking a few times and it seems pretty good.

Eldlich is technically a zombie deck and is the best of the bunch. Only issue with that is it's Eldlich.

I have seen some Zombie World versions of Eldlich that are nowhere near as cancerous as the most popular build, maybe you can check that out?

I've got a pure Zoodiac deck that I made simply because after finishing the Zoo engine in Tri-Brigade I had already crafted all of the most expensive cards, and it's just so boring to play on it's own.

Literally every single game is, "Xyz summon a half dozen times with the goal of getting to a Zeus" and literally nothing else. If you go first, sometimes you get to summon an F0, but those are essentially the only two desired board states.

This was the most "fun" deck that I had, so I'll have to see what else I can figure out for Modern while still being competitive. I don't want to just win the tournament every time by playing the best deck.

Although I don't think I had the actual best deck in the tournament considering Tri-Brigade was in it.

Your Harpie list also looks incredibly expensive as well @kateee . Are most of the cards from the same secret pack at least?

"Expensive" and "Trap Heavy" are the words I'd use to describe them, respectively.

I almost always just pass the turn back immediately. They'll have a 5 card hand and theoretically I'll have a hand trap of my own, meaning they'd need to have the nuts at that point to kill me.

Otherwise I'll do one special summon max if I'm already midway through achieving that, but that's only really when I play IDS because I'll get out a Mechaba that can be used to negate.

I just sat for 10 minutes and watched a Lyrilusc Tri-Brigade player combo and summon after I had already activated Maxx "C".

They set up a board full of monsters and negates, didn't kill me, then instantly surrendered when I played Forbidden Droplet and then wiped their board right after. Not sure what they were expecting by giving me a 12 card hand

The Xyz list in N/R is especially bad. There's essentially nothing of real value there.

I'll be playing my newly complete but also still missing cards Hero deck, which is both slightly worse than the deck I played last time, and also more silly/fun to play against, so not super tryhard this time.

Yeah it definitely seems like a lot, but I also wasn't going to say no to a paid flight and hotel!

Death Valley seems cool. My thing is less finding things to do, and more not knowing those things even exist, if that makes sense.

I also just lost to what looked like a pure Frog deck in Plat 1, which was hilarious. I can now see why Toadally Awesome is limited.

I got some Frog FTK flashbacks when I saw some of the cards, speaking of un-fun things to play against.

I get it, for sure. I guess my take on it is that there are still ways for me to play my deck and "have fun" against some of the other decks, even if I lose, whereas I often can do nothing against Eldlich if I don't have S/T removal, which just feels bad. I'm disregarding hand traps a little here, but that's because every deck runs them, making them more of an issue with the game and less any specific deck.

I'm definitely more of a mid-range guy as well. I hate waiting 10 minutes for my opponent to establish a board, and don't particularly want to do that either. It's why I think Tri-Brigade is way less cancerous than the other top stuff. They can do their combo and get out their board in a few summons, and there are clear ways to stop it from happening without feeling like they have 4 other things they can do to keep going.

It'll also be my first time spending more than a day in the US in general. I've been over the border to Buffalo for some shopping, but otherwise nothing.

So even just generic normal "American" things could be cool.

My fiance's parents surprised us with 5 nights at the MGM Grand in mid-March. I've never been but have wanted to go forever, and now I suddenly have a trip to plan in two weeks.

I think we'll try to do the landmark stuff like the Grand Canyon since we have nearly a week. I'm also both into gambling and drinking so I'm sure I'll have my bases covered there. I'm not much of a club guy but do want to go to at least one for the experience, if anyone has any recommendations of a great one.

I'm looking for info on maybe some lesser known attractions/food options, and what people would consider "must see".

The goal is to not run out of money by day 3.

At the end of the day I play the game to have fun, and I've never had a floodgate trap flipped on me and said, "Wow, that really upped the fun factor of this duel".

It's the same thing with Drytron putting out a board of Herald's with a half dozen negates. I feel like the list of people who see that and say, "This is an enjoyable experience" must be low.

Every top deck has some sort of Omni-Negate they can get out, yes, but Drytron and Eldlich, in terms of decks at the top, are the only two that seemingly strive to only do that and nothing else.

My idea of what any format of Yugioh looks like, of which I've dabbled heavily in from 2006-2016, is one that provides the opportunity to have that fun. You're absolutely right that anti-meta decks have been around forever, but they were just as unfun to play against back then as they are now, even when "Set 3 pass" was the ideal play.

If you tell me that you think playing against anti-meta is fun I'd be inclined to not believe you.

It has absolutely not always been fair! I think disregarding the way the game is played now as stupid nonsense is kind of a boomer take as well.
