Yeah, IDS. You need to pull from 3 different secret packs and it's also full of URs in the extra deck and hand traps.

Up to a 5 game win streak in Plat 1 with Heroes. Definitely misplaying a whole lot still but it's extremely cool to drop a literal Destiny Hero - Plasma on your opponent and see them have zero outs to it.

This is bringing back all the nostalgia for me. I went through waves of playing Yugioh as a kid/teen, but my first real heyday was as a 12-14 year old from '06-'08 (not including back in the early 00s when I was very young and played with the OG starter decks), and I remember spending all of my allowance and birthday money on Duelist Pack Aster Pheonix (and Jesse Anderson) in order to try to build a D-Hero deck to replace my E-Hero deck, because they seemed so much cooler.

This was just barely pre-DaD when they weren't really all that good, and those Duelist Packs also were awful and I never pulled a single Malicious or Destiny Draw from them.

I have no nostalgia for anything past Battle City arc in the anime since I had stopped paying attention by then so Heroes are like THE archetype whose popularity I don't relate to at all

But I'm all out of gems as well after spending my over 9000 on Mermail and other older archetype packs

Mermail is cool. I never got to play against them when they were at full power because the timing of one of my breaks from the game meant I missed them being great and only saw them being still pretty good.

I reached Platinum 4 with Eldlich and in Xyz event I have around 7000 medals with Phantasm Spiral Deck which it uses ONLY Normal and Rare cards!

I don't really mind Eldlich personally, it's relatively inoffensive. The gameplan is more fair than most meta decks.

Triple Skill Drain, There Can Be Only One, Gozen Match, Rivalry of Warlords, Vanity's Emptiness, and Imperial Order don't seem that fair to me. Unless the point of the game is to not be able to play the game.

Skill Drain has always been fair though. It's just that losing access to stupid nonsense makes people think they're being cheated.

I think there's a massive difference between being outmatched or losing a game normally and just not being able to play your cards. I can still have fun playing the game and losing when piloting my deck with the former, but if your opponent flips any two of those cards you essentially can't do anything unless you have mass removal. Even then, most of the Eldlich decks I see in Plat run multiple copies of most of those cards, so it's not like 1 Duster is GG.

It has absolutely not always been fair! I think disregarding the way the game is played now as stupid nonsense is kind of a boomer take as well.

It has been, though. What you're really complaining about is anti-meta cards, and those have been part of the game since its inception. Decks have just become excessively streamlined that they've gone from having a difficult time against these strategies to an impossible one. If it was ever really a problem, people would start finding more room for Twin Twisters and similar, but since it's a little unreliable, they just power through instead.

Also, your argument is self-defeating, you're also disregarding Eldlich because it's not your idea of what modern YGO is supposed to look like. That's just as bad as me putting down the million archetypes that plus endlessly while flooding the board.

I mean, most decks set up a board so that they can negate everything you try to do, thus you don't get to play. That's just modern yugioh.

The biggest problem with Imperial Order and Skill Drain is they counter each others weaknesses. Then on top of that Master Duel doesn't have siding, so if you want to counter Eldlich then you need to run specific cards that are trash against most other Meta decks.

It is true that the lack of sidedecks/best of 1 format makes these cards a lot more effective than in a traditional tournament setting.

I think my biggest complaint with those types of cards is that they really polarize the format. They're effective against the top decks, but they're really effective against niche decks more so. The top decks have so much going on that they can find room to maneuver. It would be better if it could be the reverse, but that's not really feasible.

Personally, Monarchs vs Eldlich is basically whether the Monarch player can draw into Caius to banish the Eldlich monster before he gets run over by the bigger beatstick, or if he can somehow get into Ehther using Stormforth to set up a 3x2800 board to wipe.

Domain technically lets you beat over Golden Lord but only on your turn and then he recycles it back next turn and pops one of your monsters.

(Which is to say, it's a rather boring matchup, but then meta decks vs Monarchs are literally "Does the meta deck go first, and if not can they respond to Domain?" which is even moreso)

At the end of the day I play the game to have fun, and I've never had a floodgate trap flipped on me and said, "Wow, that really upped the fun factor of this duel".

It's the same thing with Drytron putting out a board of Herald's with a half dozen negates. I feel like the list of people who see that and say, "This is an enjoyable experience" must be low.

Every top deck has some sort of Omni-Negate they can get out, yes, but Drytron and Eldlich, in terms of decks at the top, are the only two that seemingly strive to only do that and nothing else.

My idea of what any format of Yugioh looks like, of which I've dabbled heavily in from 2006-2016, is one that provides the opportunity to have that fun. You're absolutely right that anti-meta decks have been around forever, but they were just as unfun to play against back then as they are now, even when "Set 3 pass" was the ideal play.

If you tell me that you think playing against anti-meta is fun I'd be inclined to not believe you.

Hey, I don't like playing against Eldlich either. Nor do I want to play it. But none of the top tier decks really feel like something I'd have fun playing with or against. I don't think getting locked out of the game by Skill Drain instantly is particularly less fun than having my opponent summon a full board of Links and Xyz with useful effects while retaining a full hand. They're similarly demoralizing. Herald is, uh, on another level though, that card sucks. In that case I think it's just that the cost of using Herald was clearly not properly evaluated, so it really does feel unfair.

I've always been a midrange player at heart. And it's a deck type YGO isn't generally friendly to. But I guess part of that mindset is thinking that any kind of opponent is fair game.

I get it, for sure. I guess my take on it is that there are still ways for me to play my deck and "have fun" against some of the other decks, even if I lose, whereas I often can do nothing against Eldlich if I don't have S/T removal, which just feels bad. I'm disregarding hand traps a little here, but that's because every deck runs them, making them more of an issue with the game and less any specific deck.

I'm definitely more of a mid-range guy as well. I hate waiting 10 minutes for my opponent to establish a board, and don't particularly want to do that either. It's why I think Tri-Brigade is way less cancerous than the other top stuff. They can do their combo and get out their board in a few summons, and there are clear ways to stop it from happening without feeling like they have 4 other things they can do to keep going.

I also just lost to what looked like a pure Frog deck in Plat 1, which was hilarious. I can now see why Toadally Awesome is limited.

I got some Frog FTK flashbacks when I saw some of the cards, speaking of un-fun things to play against.

I'm not defending the meta at all btw. I think most top tier decks are pretty unfun to go against. I'm into just casual play with neat archetypes.

Oh man, Frog OTK brings me back. I took a frog/fish OTK to my first YCS way back in the day. Didn't get far because that was during the height of Six Sams but I had such good time that I still remember it pretty clearly.

Has anyone else experienced the Phantasm Spiral deck? I haven't heard anyone mention yet, but ran to a few and it's almost on the same level as Eldlich.

Finally took the time to push back into Plat 1 again. Guess I'm done for the season again other than dailies. Hope they put the other ranks into the game relatively soon.

@BetrayedTangy I played one for the Event. The only SR card I used was Skill Drain. All others were Rare or Normal. Dirt cheap. Of course you can use other staples, like Ash and Maxx and traps/spells but to grind medals it is fine.

Finally got time to play a bit again and decided to do the Xyz event, I went first in a duel and opened with Closed Forest against a Toon deck so it almost completely locked them out and they surrendered lol

I don't play that much ranked recently, but when I do, the number of times I end on Domain + Vanity/Majesty Fiend (or even just Erebus/Ehther) into immediate scoop, or the opponent fails to read March and tries to Lightning Storm, Raigeki, etc (Often more than one) to destroy my monsters then scoops is too damn high. It's funny, but also sad.

I've been in Platinum V for a while now and I dont care to duel anymore than that

I only hit it today because I don't play that much ranked to begin with, but I definitely understand and respect not wanting to play more once you've hit it. Difference between Plat V and Plat I really isn't anything aside from bragging rights.

I'll get on and do daily quests sometimes, but not even every day for that.

I'd really like to see them add alt formats for each season. It would add a lot more incentive to keep playing, plus gives people a reason to use the Legacy Packs.

I just sat for 10 minutes and watched a Lyrilusc Tri-Brigade player combo and summon after I had already activated Maxx "C".

They set up a board full of monsters and negates, didn't kill me, then instantly surrendered when I played Forbidden Droplet and then wiped their board right after. Not sure what they were expecting by giving me a 12 card hand

I don't really know what the optimal play is against an opposing Maxx C. Well, that's a lie, it's having Dragged By, but other than that. Just ending the turn prematurely definitely won't end well, but neither will playing it out in full and letting them draw a bunch of cards. Presumably you go for some sort of middle ground, but getting out a single negate but your opponent getting 3 cards out of it doesn't feel sufficient either.

I almost always just pass the turn back immediately. They'll have a 5 card hand and theoretically I'll have a hand trap of my own, meaning they'd need to have the nuts at that point to kill me.

Otherwise I'll do one special summon max if I'm already midway through achieving that, but that's only really when I play IDS because I'll get out a Mechaba that can be used to negate.

With Lyrliusc you're usually stuck giving them at least two cards anyway. So I try to either just get Simourgh or Zeus out and pray they didn't draw a board wipe.

i typically just finish my one Extra Deck monster and pass. sometimes i pass immediately but depending on what deck i'm playing, not finishing at least one feels too exposed when you have two weenies just sitting there
