Looks to be some very succesful Samus rallying to me.

Their numbers are almost the same difference among registered users, a bit lower for both. Among anonymous users, Mario's is about the same (suggesting he had some rallying) and Samus' is A LOT higher.

There are more ways to look at it. Mario's lead was bigger at this point of the match last time than in the end. Samus won the last 9 hours, though she lost the last 10.

I don't think we can make much of it though.

I'd be very surprised if some of this isn't Zelda bandwagoning after getting to the semis, the insane board vote is a good indicator too. Mario probably beats her without too much trouble earlier in the contest. I really doubt Snake has a chance against Samus or Mario even if he might not look terrible going on.

I picked Mega Man because it was really close and Pikachu only barely won with the help of registered user bonus in a match with low votals. The votals had fallen a bit due to the break and I expected them to be higher again in the rematch, which would mean more anonymous votes, which would help Mega Man.

It's a shame. Mega Man vs. Pikachu might be fun because it was ridiculously close, and if we get Zelda/Snake that might as well. That's more luck than anything though, there's no need in seeing Crono/Bowser og Samus/Tifa again. I'm in particular sad that Tifa's fantastic run will end with her facing Samus twice. Tifa has never went down to anyone outside the NN, yet she's faces only three of them with both Samus and Sephiroth having beaten her several times before this contest. At least she flipped one of those results.

I think that's the one time I just ignored completely how things were supposed to be and just went with gut feeling. Despite how I thought Sephiroth was stronger, I just couldn't completely believe the fanbase preferring him to Tifa any longer. Seph was the clear safe pick, but Tifa felt right and I felt like I could risk taking the upset here.

Yeah. I feel like Sora probably would've been in that group as well had the first contest started just a few months later; KH was already out in Japan at the time, but nowhere else, and Sora hasn't missed a single Character Battle since then or even come close (1-seed this year and in 2010; 2-seed in 2013 when the 1-seeds were automatically reserved for the Noble Nine.)

In addition to Sora; Luigi, Bowser, Yoshi, Ganondorf, Auron and Master Chief also only missed 2002, which is why I pointed that out specfically.

CATS was from 2006 and until missing 2010 due to vote-ins the 17th. This is the first contest he missed completely.

The Noble Nine was more about being 9 dominant forces in every contest and less about breaking the chain. The chain didn't happen until 2006 when Snake and Sonic beat Mega Man and Crono respectively.

Mostly due to the 2002 field having many obscure characters and many snubs, characters outside the NN that has appeared in every contest is only 7 (Squall, Tidus, Ryu, Kirby, Alucard, Dante and Gordon).
