TopicYour 2018, and final ever, User Of The Year Is....

I think I want to throw another comment or two as someone who used to be insanely obsessed with user contests what... 8-9 years ago? Time sure flies.

Back in the day these contests were the shit, it was like a drug to many here, myself included, User of the Year was obviously the biggest one, having by far the most active group of voters. I know it's been very cool to hate on it for the past many years, but I'll go ahead and say I always found it to be a good contest with some great formats in between, GP in particular. It also comes with the added bonus of many users becomming more active, which sure is gameplaying, but nevertheless a good thing imo. I have a bunch of fond memories related to UotY.

That said, the past bunch of years hasn't been quite as fun. I'm not sure exactly when the decline happened, or at least not when the decline became too much. I want to say after Ed Bellis stopped it, but Lefty was a great host and the year Chris hosted we had the greatest votals ever. I think the past 3 or 4 years were too bad. Cliques (or groups of close friends because some people hate being called a clique) has always been a thing, but in recent years the voterbase has mostly only consisted of one or two cliques and I think that's where it slowly stopped being fun. As someone previously quite active in b8chat and discord, having a board contest that has less and less to do with the board felt a bit weird imo. This combined with less people caring and pretty much everyone at this point being on the "uoty sucks" train, probably made it actually really suck the past few years, at least to some extend.

UotY became more of a drag than anything, something we did because we always had. Predicting while watching Naruto became a drag as well honestly. I did that for six years straight, beginning in 2012. The first two years were fun, others were making predictions too, there was a general interest. The third year was a bit less fun, so in 2015 I didn't plan to do it, but no one else made predictions either, so a bunch of people started asking for it again, being the most memorable prediction series I suppose. Learning that people actually enjoyed them, I brought it back again and continued to do that every year, making as much fun of it as possible. And it was fun! Just not all the time. I usually kicked a lot of energy into it at first, but to do it consistantly over the course of the contest was not something I had time to do really, meaning half the write-ups ended up being ass. That coupled with how some users took them personal meant that it was more often a duty than a fun project, and then you know it's time to stop, right?

Same with UotY, it has run its course. Doesn't mean it couldn't ever become a thing again, though I do believe it's unlikely at this point seeing how active the board is. Perhaps if we still got contests at the rate we used to. I just think it's a shame it probably ran for longer than it should've, since as much as many users probably wouldn't admit to it, they had fun doing this and seeing how popular they are online lol.

My last of many UotY rambles. Ctes out!

I'll admit Mario Tennis Aces has me hyped more than anything else there. Love Mario Tennis and Story Mode looks great. Now I just hope for some Mario Power Tennis level cutscenes.

Kirby Star Allies still looks really good.

Not very interested in the Super Mario Odyssey DLC. Same with Pokken, though I do appreciate Aegislash getting some spotlight. Donkey Kong in Rabbits looks pretty good though, I'll admit.

Making a definitive version of Hyrule Warriors is pretty great, two versions with a bunch of DLC made me completely lose track of everything as a casual fan that just enjoyed playing through story mode in the Wii U version. I'll most likely get it at some point.

I didn't expect Tropical Freeze to get a new release of all things, but it's a great game on a bad console, so great that more people will play it I guess. Still no Smash lol.

TWEWY on the TV is great btw, and unlike most other re-releases, it's not only a couple of years old.

Well I may be understating it a bit. There's enough of a difference that I am picking one as opposed to just saying "I haven't noticed any difference." I just mean it's not like we've doubled the the number of games decided from team selection I don't think.

I'm probably overselling it a bit because I'm bitter is cost me two matches in a row here, but I'm glad it seems to be the general consensus and it's not just me having awful luck.

matches decided on team preview

I know people who are more into OU/standard metagames, and this is a phrase that I've heard thrown around a few times there as well. I think it's just the state of the game in general now, as there continue to be more Pokemon and an increasing number of viable threats (in both standard and random) that you can't cover with just 6 Pokemon.

It's not nearly as bad there though, at least not after Baton Pass was banned. Dugtrio leaving helped too.

Actually I voted Lycanroc for the Midnight form which I'm in the minority on. I still like the Midday and Dusk forms but Midnight is where it's at

And don't get me wrong I like Decidueye but he's the most cliche winner

If not crowning Decidueye based on how it would be a cliche, Lycanroc is about as terrible an alternative as it gets though.

And awesome, it's beyond me how we're a minority. Midday and Dusk are decent but kinda boring imo, Midnight is pretty cool.

In general, I find randoms to be less enjoyable this gen than the previous. I haven't played too many games, usually stick to OU or UU, but I played a bunch before and after most of my matches, and it appears to be more random than last gen to me. I know that happens in this format, but it seems a lot more frequent now. Most of the matches appear to be decided by team preview now, which makes any match seem like a 50/50 roll a lot more than skill based play. I was unfortunate this time with my matches against Shad and Flubbin being both brutal 2-0's in which my teams stood no chance whatsoever. Random teams does provide more luck than usual, but the luck/skill balance has gotten quite a bit worse, and I enjoy less matches than not, which is a shame.

That was actually a fun set of matches for a change. In that last battle, I made the mistake of U-turning instead of just switching because I forgot to consider Life Orb recoil damage. Had I not done that I could've switched in again and Earthquake, which could've gotten the KO on Stunfisk. Either way, that was a mistake I can blame myself for unlike the last two s*** matches and I'm not moving regardless, so whatever.

Also calling inactivity on Stevie at this point, don't blame him though, the match doesn't matter at all.

This was pretty annoying. Was mad about playing so badly in the first match especially, but it didn't really matter, I wouldn't be able to break Mega Aggron. I literally had no special attack and my only super effective move against it was Drill Run on Seaking. Also I had three choiced Pokemon in that match, wtf. Not sure how second match goes if I get to perhaps sweep a little bit with Seismitoad instead of double missing, but aside from Swismitoad in rain, I had nothing to outspeed Mega Latias with, no toxic and surprisingly nothing super effective either.
So yeah, my turn to get f***ed by team luck lol.

Sorry, for not responding to your last post. I have an exam later today, so haven't been around the past two days, I can perhaps play later today, not sure though, otherwise tomorrow should be good if in the afternoon your time. Obviously same times apply for my match with you, flubbin.

Otherwise, I wont be home most of the weekend, but Sunday is good and I have the next week off, so it should be no trouble finding time then.
