Just sampled another Japanese novel, Soine Dreamer. Apparently its a sci-fi one-shot about super-powered girls visiting a parallel world in their sleep or something. The parts covered in the sample reads more like a yuri novel though...

And the main girls family name is Hokage, which I find more amusing than it should be.

Ill probably buy it some time down the line. Or if it goes on sale. Normal novels are expensive...

So I just got around to starting Octopath Traveler. Started with the Hunter character and was caught totally off guard by her and her village's localized dialogue. I mean, I don't have any particular problems with accent/dialects in localization, but having a forest tribe talk in early modern English feels... odd. And it clashes really badly with the Japanese VA.

So far I've done every character's Chapter 1. Enjoying it so far.

I've also finished Shinigami wo Tabeta Shoujo Volume 2. Really enjoyed this one, too.

The second volume is significantly different from the first, with a lot less focus on the protagonist simply killing people and more on war, internal conflicts, and the protagonist's relationships with people. I found the last few chapters to be quite emotional as well, what with the soldiers' struggles and how much the protagonist has changed throughout the story. The ending was what I'd call a "nice" one, considering the story's themes and the protagonist's goals.

I'd say its cons are that its side characters are more on the simple and comical side, with two in particular being the classic incompetent type (three side characters in particular are fairly well written though), and it doesn't use much of its fantasy elements (supposedly used more in the author's other works, which take place in the same world as this novel).

As for the pros, the protagonist is a given. She's entertaining, and her whole character ties in very well with the story and its themes as a whole. The text is fairly well written throughout, the food descriptions are on point, and the eating/celebration scenes are super comfy.

Done translating Cross Road Chapter 3 Part 2.

http://barnnn.blogspot.com/2018/09/cross-road-in-their-cases-chapter-3.html

And also Shinigami wo Tabeta Shoujo Chapter 0, which I've been doing on my phone while commuting. I feel the result isn't as good as the translations I did on my PC, what with the lack of convenient access to the dictionary software, but it's actually a bit faster this way. I might do this more often.

Thinking about it, I kinda got into anime stuff more through tokusatsu like Kamen Rider, Ultraman, a bunch'a other giant heroes, that kind of stuff.
I don't even remember the first animes I've watched, but I think they're supposed to be Saint Seiya (because it aired on TV right before Kamen Rider), Doraemon (because it's way too famous to go unnoticed), Digimon, and Pokemon.

The first fansubbed anime I watched and finished, on the other hand, I remember it being "They Are My Noble Masters". It's definitely a memorable show.

Read Shinigami wo Tabeta Shoujo up to chapter 14. The ending of this chapter really felt like a good cut-off point for the volume, but I still have 2 chapters left to go.

I'm really liking it so far. It gets better and better each chapter, especially after certain characters are introduced. Got some pretty hype moments, and the writing pretty is good with the use of "food" and "eating" as overarching themes. The protagonist is also looking good so far. She's a charming character despite being brutal as all hell, and she also has quite a bit of depth under her seemingly straightforward "gimmick" personality and buffoon-ish exterior.

I must say that having a bunch of military jargon right off the bat makes it a little hard to read though.

So I've been reading this novel called Shinigami wo Tabeta Shoujo. 6 chapters into the first volume so far, and I'd say it's a relatively simple fantasy-action novel. One-man army protagonist, classic incompetent army higher-ups, comical cannon fodder, etc.

It's got some quirks in its storytelling though. Like, I'm pretty sure they outright told the outcome of the war and how a characters end up afterwards before actually getting into it in the story itself. That and the protagonist is a soldier girl with an insatiable appetite, and each chapter's title is a rating of how delicious the food she will eat in that chapter is (like "Bread is Delicious" and "Cheese is Also Delicious"). There's also a nice contrast in the writing between how horrifying the protagonist is and how she tends to mess around with people in good fun.

Been a while since I've read this kind of "simple" fantasy story, so I guess it's a nice change of pace.

I've tried the demo. Doesn't show enough for me to get a feel of the gameplay (pretty sure it covers the first few cutscenes of the full game) but I'd say it's just a relatively simple action combat system. Not as combo intensive as Tales, so to speak.

I like the soundtrack though. And I actually like Tony Taka's art style quite a bit. Kirika is pretty cool.

Been browsing some more Japanese novels. Came across a novel adaptation of Road to Dragons. It's one of the mobile gacha games I used to play. It's got a pretty cute minimalist art style, and I kinda remember that the story and unit backgrounds were fairly well written, with most being on the depressing side. Pretty sure all of the servers are gone now though.

Translated Cross Road, Chapter 3 Part 1. This chapter's translation is gonna feel a bit awkward, since it involves Japanese people learning English and all. I don't know (how) I should handle it, really.

turn all the japanese into english, all the english into japanese, and use it as a language lesson for your readers

:p

Thats what I did for part 1 and what I have of part 2. Looks fine for now, but I forsee it getting tricky later when the English is spoken with a Japanese accent.

Right... I remember watching the LA adaptation of Uzumaki. Was pretty dry in the acting department, but they did well with the creepy atmosphere.

Then theres Gyo, which was decent, but both the original manga and the animes rewritten scenario arent really fit for a long anime episode.

And the Ito Junji Collection, well, its got a few good parts in, but the adaptation work feels pretty dry for me because the art style doesnt seem to translate that well to full color.

Hmm, so the latest volume of Kino's Journey manga (Shinomiya) clears up another ambiguous detail from the LN. I mean, most LN readers probably knew this already, but this time it's pretty much 100% confirmed to be true.

(Spoilers for 2003 anime series EP4 and 2017 series EP11)
The ruined country Kino visits in Blooming Prairie A is confirmed to be Kino's home country. The manga's backgrounds shows the country's clock tower and the surrounding buildings, and also Kino's old house.

So about that Digibro video... I can totally see where he's coming from about good things being misunderstood or disliked for not being what people expect them to be, because there are a few things I actually like that aren't exactly what one would expect from the story synopsis/cover/PV etc. There doesn't seem to be much substance in it regarding Mayoiga itself though.

And it looks like The Unlucky Hippo song has been around since 1980 or something. It's by Noko Inoko and was based on the Solomon Grundy nursery rhyme. TIL.

Right, Mayoiga. Its defnitely a... memorable show, if anything. The first episode was pretty nice, but the rest are just awful and not even that funny. And while its apparent that the main characters are all eccentric people, their eccentricity arent utilized that well in the story. Its a bad example of Japanese horror-comedy, Id say.

I liked two of its songs though. The Unlucky Hippo and Ketsuro are way too good for the series itself.

Interesting, for the first one I wouldn't think it would be a comedy. Might have to check it out

For the second one, I've seen the cover around. Literally just learned after all these years that the girl in the front is a girl

Well, Shibito no Koe is what Id call a comedy/horror because its definitely dark and serious, but written and drawn with a degree of intended comedic effects. For the most part, its not straight up comedy like, say, the early part of Dusk Maiden X Amnesia though.

Recently read this comedy/horror manga called Shibito no Koe wo Kiku ga Yoi. Its episodic and simply follows the main character as he gets roped into hilarious ghost and sci-fi shenanigans. The art is nice and the comedy cues are on point. Read only one volume so far, but Im already enjoying it a lot.

Also tried out The Promised Neverland. Nothing much happens in the first two volumes, but Id say its off to a good start with its mystery/horror/sci-fi plot. The art is also top notch, as expected from Pone. The Thai print release is on low quality paper and ink though, which is a real shame.

Stories include Blooming Prairie for the prologue and epilogue, Land of the Witch, Overprotection, and both parts of Tale of the Pictures. They're all LN Volume 2 stories aside from the prologue and epilogue, so it looks like this this manga's run will be following the trend of adapting one LN volume at a time.

Three new novels announced by J-Novel Club. One of them is ECHO, an adaptation of the Gumi Vocaloid song. Its by Akira, the author of the Yume Nikki novel (also licensed by J-NC), Sasami-san@Gambaranai, and the upcoming SCP Foundation novel.

And if Im remembering right, this is the second Vocaloid novel to get an official English release.

Kinda interested in the Bakarina thing too.

In regards to adaptations, I haven't read enough to be sure but I dunno what I feel about adapting things that originally had very little active storytelling. If the injection of the non-canon personalities aren't good, it'll read a lot like a fan fiction, but I'm sure a professional writer would probably be capable of pulling off a great adaptation.

Hmm, the Vocaloid novels are standalone anyway, so there isnt really a need to conform to anything aside from their respective song/album themes, aside from the songs that are straight up stories like the rom-com songs.

Most of the ones Ive checked out are quite good in presenting stories with their songs themes, and the characters are well thought out. Some of them dont even use the Vocaloid mascots as characters, so theres that.

So yeah, its kinda up to the authors to pull it off. From the ones Ive finished, Disappearance did pretty well with the very basic character of Miku (singing robot), and Sakura no Ame was great with its main characters as Vocaloid mascot stand-ins (especially Rin, Gumi, and Leon).

(And... Im remembering wrong. The Kagerou novels also got official English releases, so that makes ECHO the third.)
