It used to work decades ago

Now people realize that PC has almost every third party game, Sony has almost no exclusives, and MS is also on PC. Only Nintendo fans need consoles, and thats because they have decades of being mostly a first party output

I went to Japan and while I was visiting the zoo I got adopted by an entire highschool baseball team and their teacher too. They were so excited to see a white guy and hang out and everyone wanted pictures and to try asking me questions. Ended up just walking around the zoo with them as if I was just another chaperone. Yes they were like the nicest most polite high schoolers you'd ever met. But it was like that everywhere, you visit Japan as gaijin and you're a celebrity to a lot of people just for existing in their country. I expect that will start to change as tourism ramps up

Depends on where you live and what you look like, really. Certain. Types are favored above other foreigners.

Ive definitely been the center of attention though. Got compared to celebrities I look nothing like, asked if I knew famous people, asked about guns, etc.

One of the nicer experiences was when I lived in a small town. It was right before Golden Week, and this old man was just standing around outside the supermarket. He stops me, asks to talk, asks some pretty mundane questions (in English, mind you, which is super rare, especially for his age), thanked me, and walked off. It was nice and genuine.

Sometimes I actually feel uncomfortable sticking out here, cause people do treat you differently, and sometimes even put huge expectations on you to be good foreign.

One bad example was this woman who kept comparing me to other foreigners. I was the good one and all the others were bad. I told her that this type of thinking hurts me too, and keeps me from major purchases, renting things, and other normal things which Japanese never have to worry about. She said it is fair, because those things need to be that way thanks to bad foreigners. It was bizarre and felt gross. Kind of like an old racist grandpa who has that one black friend.

Then I'll believe the person wasn't lying about what they ate for lunch vs the very strange angry man insisting she's lying but can't say what about.

You know, like common sense.

Still love the metal gymnastics in acting offended/insulted because you were asked what the person you called a liar unprovoked was lying about.

Everyone calling her out for her videos are talking about culture, not what she ate for lunch.

Youre the one who got angry and started lashing out demanding proof, and then talking about her lunch. Sounds like major projection.

Only because you called someone a liar but refuse to say what they lied about, then just said "my experience was different, therefore she lied" which is super silly

Take her bike broke down so she borrowed her landlords, her hair poked out so she looked like a cockatoo, then ate lunch, only had 2 classes, the kids clean the classroom, there's not much English or Manga in the library, she was given an ice cream, she cycled home and was given a cabbage

Where's the lie? Which part? How do you know?

You're right we can't see it lol

By your logic if any two Americans claim to have had a different experience ever, then one is lying

Hell "I live in Japan and my experience was different in ways I cannot communicate or specify" doesn't mean she's lying. Just means you had 2 different experiences.

Are you even a teacher?

Because you came out questioning my integrity, and also have shown hostility to other posters in this topic.

Other people who know her have said, in this topic, that she generalizes and gives a bad image of foreigners, and misrepresents Japan as a playground.

Since you really want to know, watch her videos about things foreigners wouldnt understand or whatever its called. Also her videos about work life. Yeah obviously she has had different experiences, but she also makes bold statements about the culture and the job that anyone who has actually been here can say are not true. Its clickbait for foreigners who dream of Japan, and its not accurate to the actual culture or things she is even talking about.

Sorry, I cant prove its a lie. You need to be here to see it.

When you know what the kanjis mean, it's like kanji actually make reading Japanese a million times easier.

That was one thing that confused me because the spelling in hiragana is actually o chi ya, but its just pronounced ocha. Ive spent about half of my time learning Japanese today on the small/silent characters in hiragana. The difference is rather subtle as it is written in the Duolingo app, so Im trying to pay more attention to it now.

It isnt o-chi-ya. Its o-chya. There are other weirdo blends that duolingo really sucks at teaching. The -ou sound being the main culprit.

Hiragana and katakana can be very easy and only take a week to remember. Just get a notebook or get a poster and write every day, and put the poster on your wall.

Kanji is the killer.

Duolingo also kind of sucks for Japanese. Not only is it not natural spoken Japanese, but the way it recognizes non-roman script is really off, oftentimes misusing kanji pronunciation or context.

DL in Japanese is good for upkeep, but not for learning the actual language. Being immersed is the best way.

Im also gonna say avoid anime Japanese unless you want to sound like an idiot to people. Its like a foreigners talking like a Spongebob, or GI Joe character.

People dont know what censorship is.

censorship is when another party deliberately changes your thing to match with their views.

Not when a company changes it themself, in order to fix mistakes or make something easier for everyone to get into. It is also nit when a game isnt 1:1 during localization.

And in the case of this game, the game is the same. They changed some graffiti. Wow game ruined.

It is almost always racists and really gross people who get upset over this kind of thing for some reason. But they also dont mind when their beliefs force others to hide, or even be assaulted.

Almost all of the sidequest stuff is optional. You can safely jump to story sequences whenever you want.

Side stuff in the game is handled much better. Every sidequest involves a party member, and you get some character insight, good interactions, and good items or weapons for doing them.

In Remake, it was like, help these kids collect some dumb stuff to watch an adult talk at you in a kid body for five minutes.
