Yeah that's definitely part of it.

Honestly I think JPRPGs would be better off without battle music for regular enemy encounters. Just let the music for the area play uninterrupted. Then use battle music for enemies that are mini boss level or above.
Well, it depends on the atmosphere. Some dungeons have a more ambient feel with music that would just be awkward to fight to. 7 did a thing where in some dungeons the dungeon music would play uninterrupted while in others, it would play the battle music and then go back to the dungeon music after the battle.

With the ways modern games are capable of doing music, and with the bigger budgets they have, it has the potential to be a lot less jarring than it used to be. For example, they can make custom battle music for each dungeon, or they can add and remove layers or swap to a different track on the beat. Stuff like that is definitely welcome in my book.

Actually, most of this stuff has been possible for decades using midi (Rescue: The Embassy Mission did it on the NES) but it's a relatively recent development for it to happen with high quality sampled audio.

Nah. But I also know I'm in the minority with that opinion.

I dunno why but I could never get into the game. Over the years I've started the game 3 times, got 5-10 hours into it and just...lost interest.

It's the one hipsters who refuse to like 7 because it's too popular flock to, without yet realizing that 6 is now by far the most popular as a result.

I genuinely want to live in your alternate reality where 6 has a sequel movie, two decades worth of spinoffs / prequels, a Hobbit'ed multimillion dollar remake trilogy, and Terra, Locke, and Celes are household names even outside the fandom.

1. How many of those have happened since the hipster movement?

2. Since when do publishers know what fans like?

Well for starters, you're gonna have to supply me with an exact date, considering that you made it up.

And I'm not surprised in the slightest that you doubled down on this particularly-cloistered take with lightning response time. Everyone other than me was smart enough not to bite the bait, it seems.

These things don't happen on an exact date but let's go with roughly 2010.

Anyway, you'll learn.

For me personally, FF6 was the first video game that showed me at the tender age of 11 that video games could be art. The music, the graphics at the time...even the way the game was subtlety treated like a stage play, with moogles appearing on a black screen to explain the next step, or an imp walking out to jaunty ragtime music to describe how Gau's Rage worked. Little touches that really helped sell me on the game, and genre as a whole (because at the time I really did not like turned-based RPGs, especially when they cut to a different screen for battles).

But anyway, the Opera performance was pretty much mind-blowing at the time. The music, the choreography, the way the sprites' mouths synced up to the lyrics. And they made it just interactive enough to not feel like a cutscene without turning into a prototype-QTE.

I'm going to get some weird looks, but I think the base game is fine, but that's all it is, is just fine. Of the 3 SNES titles, 4 was my favourite. I actually wish they had done more with Kefka, he's used great in the first 1/5th of the game, then he just disappears until the world of ruin.

I agree with this. I was bored to tears when the game first came out with the opera scene and on every play through since, including the pixel remaster. I dont get the hype the opera has. It just drags.

Unpopular opinion? I think FF6 has the worst battle theme, but one of the best normal boss themes

I didn't think either were that great, though the regular battle theme is extremely memorable. Now the Fierce Battle/Atma theme was quite good. All of the 16-bit FFs had really good "big boss" fights.

Also Dancing Mad parts 1,2 and the last part are the only good parts of the song

Wouldn't that be three quarters?

It's just pretty and very impressively done.
It fits right in with everything else in the game, since the game as a whole is sort of framed and written like it's some melodramatic opera.

"Opera" as a whole seemed to be the main vibe they were going for when designing the game. So an opera within an opera just felt...like everything clicked.

ImTheLoneWolf posted... Everyone that says its their favorite or the best FF game omly say it because they were super young playing it.
I only played it for the first time last year (age 31), and it almost instantly became one of my favorite FF games. It's just genuinely endearing.
