SE is one of the most incompetent companies right now. Bunch of old men at the top who are out of touch with consumers. They follow trends without knowing why they worked.

Don't get me wrong, Square has released a bunch of garbage over the course of a few years that looked like they cost a lot to make and then flopped hard. Look at things like Valkyrie Elysium, Harvestella, and Forspoken. At the same time, it feels like they're not being forthcoming about how successful large releases are (FFXVI and Remake/Rebirth) or how successful mid budget stuff in a more classic style is (Octopath 2, Bravely Default 2, Live A Live remake). It's tough to feel like they're really being successful, so some less reliable investments being cut is no surprise, but the direction they're looking to take is very unclear.

I don't get the warm fuzzies considering their direction lately. Last I heard, they hadn't dropped their desire to pursue NFTs, for example. And they love their mobile gacha garbage. I have zero confidence that this will turn out well.

At this point it feels like Square Enix is largely propped up by FFXIV and Sony's desperation for exclusives.

surely it couldn't be that hard to just port the PS1 back catalog of weird games and just...stop taking exclusivity deals and shadowdropping games to just die on the same day something huge happens

but then again these things happen when you get the web3 crypto goon for a CEO :\

Japanese market for video games isnt that large. Third largest in the world but only 16 percent of the global market as of 2021. Being big there and nowhere else isnt an achievement.

They litetally sold Eidos Montreal for NFT after the guardian of the galaxy game did well. It just didn't do well enough for them. I feel like SE wanna reach GTA numbers, but the thing is, games like gta and CoD do pander to casuals who only play 3 games so while the sales are great, a lot of people who buy those games will have a small collection library

Don't forget Kingdom Hearts. Despite having to split the profits with Disney in order to be allowed to make the series, it's still a top-selling franchise for Square-Enix, and is likely more profitable for the company than Dragon Quest (which pretty much was only big in Japan until very recently, whereas Kingdom Hearts has always been popular worldwide, owing to how big Disney is).

This is so dumb. I just find it funny that the last yakuza sold over 1 millions in 1 week and rgg studio was very happy about it and they were happy to say the best selling yakuza was 7 at 1.8 millions lol

Even then, DQ being popular isnt the issue. Nintendo dominates in Japan, by a large margin. DQ probably sells better on nintendo, unless someone has numbers to prove me otherwise.

The market has changed. SE doesnt know what to do now, and follows trends, without knowing why they trend,

It's already rumored to be a dark action game.

If they mean dark like Tales, like light hearted at time, horrible at others(People love acting like Vesperia is more mature than Symphonia due to Yuri being a more mature protagonist and one game, but I thought the themes were actually darker in symphonia)

DQ also got more popular in western countries(although I guess younger gens might have learned about DQ because of smash)

Enix bought Square, not the other way around. It's an institution in Japan, and there is zero chance that's happening.

Wish there was a new Chrono game and no, that botched Cross remaster doesn't count.

Y'all thinking FF and DQ are in danger, when it's crap like Foamstars, Forspoken, Harvestella and the like that led them to this point.

That's ok, I didn't even know they were working on anything, except for FF7R3, KH4 and I assume a FF17.

As I understand it, KH4 is literally "the story is over but we want more money so..."

Which is also how every main FF is. And besides, there are 16 more of them to play, and that's if you're being obtuse.

So the only real concern here is FF7R3, which I was waiting for that one to release and the bundle of the three to go on sale before buying anyway so I'm not gonna get left cliffhangered either way.

Their remakes/remasters of older titles were regularly performing better then expected, and large releases usually the opposite. I think any remasters are at least relatively safe, as long as they were actually in dev and not just speculation/an obscure old title.

There's also the fact that BG3 was very popular and Infinite wealth and persona as well.

BG3 and Infinite wealth showed you can innovate the turn based systems by adding a lot of aoe that is more complex than "one or all ennemies"(which used to be done by chrono trigger, but whatever). Mobility adds a lot depth to those games system as well. People would probably enjoy a FF that innovates on the classic formula

I forget they've been chasing the movie style Megabucks since The Spirits Within. I think they still think they're one of the big guns in the gaming world these days, when I think sales wise they're more on par with/a little ahead of Atlus, lately.

Theyre publicly traded. You can just look up their quarterly reports or end of the year and do simple timelines. Theyre still reporting multibillion USD gross though, if there was any doubt.

The VP and SO IPs are owned and developed by Tri-Ace, with SE just publishing them. Im honestly not sure why Elysium was developed by a different studio, but I do know Tri-Ace helps SE do dev work and not the other way around; so its unlikely anything they want to make would be refused for publishing.
