Like how does that work. I am guessing one company pays for the rights. But it would seem like that wouldn't cover the cost for the game maker. So I dont see the incentive for this to happen. Unless it is one of those relationships where the dev team is almost like a an part of the company in everything but name.

Money, marketing costs paid for, maybe a lesser % of the cut of sales instead of the usual 30%. There must be some math mathing in order for both players to agree.

It cuts a couple of ways and everyone is looking to make a profit.

One publishers have to pay gaming systems for the license to make games for their system.

Two gaming systems have to pay for publishers/developers if they want them to make games exclusively for their system.

And there are deals built into deals, things happening behind the scenes that make no sense to gamers but what accounts and contract lawyers love.

It used to work decades ago

Now people realize that PC has almost every third party game, Sony has almost no exclusives, and MS is also on PC. Only Nintendo fans need consoles, and thats because they have decades of being mostly a first party output

The hardware manufacturer gives the publisher and developer lots of $$$, is how it works.

Sometimes its just a dev(usually a smaller one or a smaller team) who wants to save time/money upfront. Sure multiplat might make MORE but they don't have enough money or people to expand development.

Sometimes its more personal. A developer skips a platform because bad blood. Or they are close to the CEO and make an exclusive.

Sometimes they think a game only really has a receptive audience on one platform.

Sometimes its a result of features. A dev has an idea they think only works or works better on a feature only that platform has.

Money or other deals is the main reason for any notable game usually though.
