| _SJimW_ 05/17/20 2:45:37 PM #297 | Outside of GameFAQs it seems like Fire Emblem games have a much higher playrate than Xenoblade (most likely due to the latter being a late in life Wii game and its 3DS port being a New 3DS exclusive with a graphical downgrade), but the people who've played Xenoblade tend to like it a lot more. It feels like it's really common for people who played Xenoblade to have it in their top 10 of all-time, whereas Fire Emblem fans can't agree what the best FE game is and for a lot of people games like Awakening and Three Houses were just "really good". --- RIP in Pieces GamerJM, 2007-2015. | _SJimW_ 05/16/20 8:22:30 PM #225 | Okay so I've read this whole topic now and a couple of stray points: -Ni No Kuni sucks not because it's a traditional JRPG (DQ11 is as traditional as they come and it did well in the contest, mostly to peoples' joy), but because the AI is garbage that can't do jackshit. It's a game where the AI controls party members and you constantly have to babysit it. It has all of the makings of a great JRPG otherwise but the combat just isn't fun and this is largely why. -Wtf is up with the random "giant corporations having a monopoly on shit" nuthugging? People dislike Amazon driving other companies out of business and Disney having Spider-Man movie rights because the more one singular giant corporation has control over an entire industry the more they can drive up prices, fuck over consumers, and not have to worry about quality control (Disney having Spider-Man movie rights impacts the latter because Spider-Man is one of the last big moneymakers Sony Pictures has). --- RIP in Pieces GamerJM, 2007-2015. First time I didn't look at the histories too much and second time I wanted to bank on an upset. The thing is around GameFAQs Dark Souls seems really popular, like if I were to predict a game of the decade for NGG specifically BotW and Dark Souls would be my clear favorites for winning. Same thing seems to be on other sites like Era. I don't go on gaming Subreddits where games like Skyrim and Witcher are apparently still hugely popular. The closest thing to that are consolized WRPGs so that wins in a contest like this. But I don't trust any of these games to have actual strength aside from BotW, Smash Ultimate, Odyssey, Witcher 3, and maybe Persona 5/Dark Souls/Skyrim. Dragon Quest has just historically not done that well and if DQ11 was really the series breakout moment that's kind of bizarre to me because as a game it basically does nothing differently than the other ten games besides higher production values. That way I still get a challenge but I never hit brick walls, which I've learned over time can be demotivating for me just playing games in general and I'm trying to get through my backlog. But that's just something I'm starting to play around with, normally it's: -Hardest available if it's a rhythm game -Easy if it's an FPS/3PS -Normal otherwise --- RIP in Pieces GamerJM, 2007-2015. Like a lot, don't normally like open world games but have a lot of appreciation for this, Nintendo displayed some top-of-the-line game design with how everything is laid out and filling a world with interesting things to do and see. DQ11: Played (the Japanese 3DS version! Also the PS4 one but put more time into the 3DS one). Like a lot, it's a Dragon Quest alright. ME2: Haven't played RE2: Haven't played Smash Ultimate: Played. Kinda love it on the surface in terms of fan service and being fun wacky chaos, on a deeper level I don't really think it moves forward from the Smash 4 design philosophy towards something like Melee in a very meaningful way. Mario Odyssey: Played. Loved it, strong contender for a personal GotD for me. Persona 4G: Played. Loved it, would also be a strong contender for personal GotD if I considered it from this decade but I don't. Xenoblade: Played. Overrated tbh, I don't like these MMO-type battle systems. Everything else about this game is really good but I mostly play RPGs for gameplay. Witcher 3: Haven't played. God of War: Haven't Played. Persona 5: Played, it's really good but not Persona 4 level due to pacing issues. Portal 2/RDR 2: Played Portal 2, not RDR2. Portal 2 is awesome, not exactly my cup of tea but probably one of the only AAA western games in the last decade I'd bat for. Dark Souls: Haven't played. The last of us: I suck at stealth games so I got like a third of the way through this and then gave up and watched a LP. The story doesn't grip me and the gameplay doesn't compel me at all, dislike. Skyrim: Tried to get into this but I can't with these open world games. I spent like 15 hours fucking around in this (vanilla on 360) and then never touched again. Pokemon/Nier: Played both. HGSS is probably my actual Game of the Decade. I recently replayed HeartGold and that game is still debatably the pinnacle of Pokemon for me, everything comes together and there's just so much to do. What happened to Game Freak man. Nier Automata has average combat, bland world design, and an at-times nonsensical story but it comes together in a memorable package that I'm glad I experienced and appreciate but don't particularly have a lot of love for. --- RIP in Pieces GamerJM, 2007-2015. The scene has basically been split into two since the release of Brawl. There isn't really a "main" game, everyone that plays Melee kept playing Melee while trying Ultimate on the side and Ultimate mainly had the Smash 4 base + new people. A good number of Melee people tried Ultimate for its first year but their main competitive game is still Melee, that includes people like Leffen and Plup who streamed the hell out of Ultimate because it brought viewers to their channel, they still put a lot more effort into practicing Melee. Ultimate brought new players due to its popularity (not like, with the competitive scene specifically necessarily, just like with people in general due to its very high sales numbers) which is why it's often streamed after Melee, since it brings in more viewers. | _SJimW_ 04/25/20 3:50:35 PM #30 | Persona 5 has severe pacing issues, some of the dungeon design gets annoying in the latter half of the game (whereas P4's dungeons are simple but you get into a groove with them), and the cast/music, while also really damng great, is just less memorable overall. P4 wins but both games are great and share the same core strengths. 3 is significantly worse than both. Tartarus isn't a very compelling dungeon and it's the only one in the game. The story just has less going on for most of its runtime though some of the characters are admittedly fantastic. The non-P3P versions have AI controlled party members and P3P is significantly worse in terms of presentation.
