The original rules in basketball didnt have dribbling. Players had to throw the ball from where they caught it, but were allowed a few steps if they were running at that time and tried to stop. But players could technically pass the ball to themselves by bouncing it on the floor, and there you go lol

But there was still a little pushback and some people wanted to limit it to one dribble each time you got the ball, but an association was formed specifically to protest that, and dribbling stayed.
