Yeah I think the main issue is the worlds. In jobless they actually make the world seem interesting and spend a lot of time on world building. Each new place they get to is exciting to see. Different cultures and locales with actual thought and depth put into them instead of just "oh hey, it's desert city, now back to our characters".

And part of it how seriously the shows take themselves. A lot of isekai just feel pretty amateurish and silly even if they are entertaining. Like this seasons spider and last dungeon fall into this even though I enjoy both of them. The last fantasy I can remember that really took itself seriously was made in abyss and what do ya know, it too had a really interesting world. I just want to have a sense of wonder while I watch it.

The lack of similar things or I guess just how so many people copied the web novels but all seemed to fail to do the basics even with this very solid blueprint to copy from. It's similar to how all monster hunter clones completely miss the parts that make MH actually good and up very shallow as a result.

Whelp, jobless reincarnation is finished for now. Fortunately it ended with a "look forward to season 2" announcement, although no date on it for now. This last episode was as good as the rest and I'm continually impressed by the animators.

Small things like rudy and ruij swapping their weapons to the other hand to shake with their dominant hands and the focus on eris's persective when she got sent flying and the follow up quickly slashing the tree to slow her momentum. The show doesn't even go out of it's way to highlight these things, they are just there and the show is so much better for it. The care and attention to detail is top notch and the actions scenes have a great intensity to them. You feel the power of every attack and even with how powerful the melee attacks are, magic carries that something special every time it hits.

It sort of pisses me off though. Like, this show is excellent quality in every aspect. The characters and writing and pacing and animation and voice acting and ost and sound design and everything, but theres nothing really that revolutionary or inventive in it. LN authors have had this blueprint for 9 years now. Why isn't this the standard? How many years have I been yearning for more fantasy adventure? I've complained about it here at least a dozen times over the year. Having a good example of one pop up makes me mad that there aren't more. Just give me more fantasy worlds that are taken seriously with good interesting world building and a traveling adventure format.

EDIT: Supposedly season 2 is coming this summer. Hell yeah.

Like, if it honestly gets too bad, just skip to episode 15 and read a synopsis or something. That first 15 episodes is pretty different to the rest of the series which mostly takes place on the battlefield where they can at least leverage their bad CG by having tons and tons of moving soldiers in battle/marching scenes. The first 15 episodes does matter for the plot, but the two times I've rewatched kingdom, I always skip it.

Currently five episodes into Kingdom.

The cg does get better. Season 2 barely has any IIRC. Also the CG that is there improves somewhat throughout the first season although it never gets good or even passable. I feel like the story picks up enough to really drag you through the bad CG after the first arc (which is like 15 episodes of basically prequel).

My only real problem with switch (aside from joycon drift being inexcusable for how expensive those are) is that they pretty much never discount their main games. Like, mario kart 8 delux is still fucking 60 bucks. That's a remake of a game that came out like 7 years ago. What right does it have to still be 60 dollars and never go on sale? Same but to a lesser extent for mario odyssey and breath of the wild.

There are some great games on switch though. It might reignite your desire to play real games again.

My favorite adult rpg finally finished up and fully released on steam. Daughter of Essence specifically. Barely passable as porn but IMO amazing as an rpg. It's like 50 hours long and has a good story and fun characters and good world building. Like I legit think it's on par with something like the older final fantasy or dragon quest games. There's a free demo that lets you play the first 4 (of 10) chapters and the save transfers over.

I wish I could play it so much. Not sure if it's the low frame rate or what but it causes me issues pretty much right away in the demo. Might try and force my way through my symptoms and play it anyway cause it's freakin monster hunter. Although honestly almost every bit of news coming out about it bums me out. Not remotely excited about rampage mode and apparently, at least for now, grinding rampage mode is end game. The aerial hitboxes are also SUPER jank which is a problem because rise's whole gimmick is aerial mobility with the wirebugs. Feels like they couldn't find a legit way to balance it so they just extended every hitbox 10 meters into the air.

Yeah I've done that a few times this season. I almost feel bad for it because it is pretty good but like, jobless reincarnation is the only thing I think about when I think of isekai right now. Makes slime and spider feel like pale imitations.

Damn, this weeks slime was intense. Basically 20 minutes of fights culminating in complete slaughter of the human army.

I honestly feel kinda bad for them. I mean, plenty of em were probably just in the army to protect their country. Being a normal human grunt in a fantasy world seems utterly terrifying.

I've heard that the studio plans to adapt the entire series. I'm sure that somewhat hinges on it being successful. I need to look up how well it's doing. I know it's pretty high up on the site I watch on and MAL members for the season.

At the same time, if it really would be 10 more seasons it wouldn't be done until like 2030.

The more I think on it, the more I think jobless reincarnation could become my favorite anime series of all time. Currently for me it's the monogatari series which is godlike but like, damn do I love this show. Assuming the adaption stays this good and they adapt the full thing it really could take the number 1 spot for me. Ugh why isn't there like 500 more episodes of it for me to watch already!

The stuck up girl (eris) just gets more and more enjoyable every episode. Went from annoying to endearing over the course of like 6 episodes.

I'm sorta mixed on rudy's creepy parts. I don't like them, but they do serve his character. He has been developing restraint and compassion especially in the later half of this season. Definitely won't stop me watching or anything but it does make it a lot harder to recommend. I've been trying to get my best friend to watch it but I always have to add that asterisk about it.

God damn jobless reincarnation is on another level. It's finally the adventure fantasy show I've wanted for so long. When they entered that town in this episode I was so excited. It felt like I was watching the opening for some rpg I'd be super excited to play. I just want to explore it. So sad that next episode is the last of this season. God I want to play an rpg so bad now. I'm still taking a break from trying games until I heal up more from my surgery but it's gonna be hard to wait.

Watched the latest spider and bottom tier character. Was really funny seeing the spider from other peoples perspective. That old man was pretty funny in general. Can't wait to see the new evolution. I wonder which one will be her human form? Perhaps this one? Turns out the human side of the story isn't too boring when it doesn't focus on the the boring ass blue haired dude.

Bottom tier character continues to be kinda trash but a guilty pleasure for me. I kinda feel like around episode 5 or so the show got a bit boring but it's picked up a bit the last 2 episodes. It's still not good really, but I do enjoy it. I do feel like they did a pretty good job of slowly making the main guy less of loser. Like, the progress is slow but steady and that makes it pretty satisfying.

Jujutsu kaisen remains great this week. Sad this season will be ending soon. I know I've looked before but I should take another look at next season to see if it'll come close to this one. So far though, this is the best season in quite a while for me.

Watched this weeks horimiya and then jobless reincarnation. Both were good. Now more clear than ever that jobless reincarnation will need to have more seasons to wrap anything up. It's clearly just getting started. I hope it's doing well in sales since it seems to be doing well in ratings and popularity online. Also impressed how eris becomes more likeable every episode. I feel whats currently going on should be really good for character development.

Huh, watched this weeks spider and I feel kind of dumb for not realizing that the two storylines aren't necessarily or even likely happening at the same time. This latest episode basically confirmed that they aren't and it's entirely possible the female demon lord with string is main girl 15 years in the future. I mean, it makes sense. All the other people seemed to reincarnate at the same time since they are the same age so why wouldn't main girl also have reincarnated that 15 or so years ago?.

I had also caught up on jujutsu kaisen which is still awesome but they released another episode so now I'm one behind. I'm glad jobless reincarnation is the day before my surgery.

Theres some free unity based software that can track face and hands that works with any webcame that seemed to work surprisingly well. I saw a video on it. While you could probably find some kind of placeholder model, I doubt you'd succeed without a some custom made model that would also need to be rigged of course. Getting a model is the current barrier to entry. Paying someone to make one can be fairly expensive. Of course, you also need a PC capable of streaming, running whatever vtuber software you use, and running whatever you games you intend to play at the same time. That's not like a crazy high barrier but I don't think my PC could handle it.

Somebody got the VA for Michael (GTAV) to give a special birthday message to Miko.

That's pretty awesome. For anyone that isn't as deep in the rabbit hole as me, GTA5 basically saved Miko's career. Her subs were WAY lower than everyone elses and she was supposedly probably going to quit and then some of her GTA5 clips went viral and she exploded popularity wise.

Also funny how Haachama trolling Miko and telling her "fuck you" means I love you has stayed around as a meme for so long.

Personally I would be more worried about not using anesthesia because it would suck getting cut open and feel everything.

I definitely need to use it, it's just scary. If better research had been done into my condition they could probably tell me if I'm being scared over nothing but sadly every medical research paper ever is inconclusive and just says somebody (not the person writing the paper) should look more into it.

Oh well, I should stop myself from ranting about the medical industry here.

I mean, I guess it's mental illness. It was a psychological horror thing. Anyway, she posted a message to her youtube as well. Apparently the latest of the videos had the two bodies fused at the head with 3 eyes and that was just too much for little baby viewers that complained and so hololive forced her to private all the related videos which was like a month of her work. She is now on a break. It's unclear if she decided to go on break or if she effectively got suspended.

Considering they have managers and stuff I feel like this is a fairly big failure on Hololive's part. They were presumably OKing the videos she put out so to effectively ban them after she's been doing this for over a month is pretty lame.

Reminds me of when they fucked up negotiating rights and like 90% of all the archived footage had to be deleted from all the girls channels.

Unrelated to that, I have surgery scheduled for monday at 9:15. The surgery itself is simple and relatively safe (gallbladder removal) but with my condition I'm quite afraid of being put under general anesthesia. I'm honestly pretty terrified. It's entirely possible I die from it. On the other hand, it has the potential to help me digest food which could make a huge improvement in my health.

I haven't really updated in a while but I'm at about 117 lbs (6 feet tall). Been roughly that weight since I almost died in late September from untyped hepatitis (very nearly had liver failure). A lot of my labs actually look quite a bit better than they have in over a year. I can't really bring myself to get my hopes up very high after so many disappointments but it's possible this hell is almost over. I just wanna be able to eat and play video games and watch anime again. I'll probably actually just make a topic about the surgery.

Of course if you count time travel back, do you count time travel forward? Dr Stone shares a lot of elements with an isekai but all that happens to take him from one "world" to another is he gets frozen in stone for several thousand years.

Yeah although theres definitely some things that are a grey area like inuyasha where technically kagome stays in japan the whole series but when she travels through the well she is effectively in another world. Same with trapped in a game stories. The game world is another world but the person still exists in modern day japan. I'm not sure finding an exact distinction really matters though.

Narritively, it's pretty much used in 2 ways. One, to allow a relatable protagonist to experience a different world and have an excuse to explain the world to the viewer by explaining it to the protagonist. Thats why I feel like DanMachi might as well be isekai even though it isn't.

The other way is to have a protagonist with basically impossible knowledge of the world. This is where you get characters using status screens being genre saavy. Something like spider from this season is very much this way and really plays up knowing that it's basically a game world.

They aren't mutually exclusive either. In fact I'd say usually the protag has some basically cheat knowledge but still has to learn most of how the world works. Something like jobless reincarnation fits here pretty well.

Well yeah but they introduce everything to him as if he has never lived on the planet before IIRC. If he had been from earth and reincarnated there, the story would be no different outside of his potential ties with zues that don't really matter.

Granted it's been quite a few years since I saw the first season but theres plenty of times I forget it's not an isekai.

Best day of the anime week was today cause new jobless reincarnation. It does seem like our main guy is getting slowly less scummy. Very slowly. Also damn things really escalated at the end all of a sudden. With only 3 eps left I assume they are basically just going to introduce whatever this conflict will be cause I can't see how they could reasonably develop and resolve it in just an hour of screen time. Or maybe it'll go on the backburner for a while and we will see rudy go to school.

I mean, even in the anime there really isn't melodrama. It's like things just start to look like melodrama will happen, but then things just resolve instead. Like hori will be all worried about something and there will be a misunderstanding but then it just gets cleared up right away before anything really happens.

Kinda reminds of the yuri manga "girlfriends" in that respect although they still managed to actually be melodramatic sometimes. With grilfriends though it was like one of the characters in the relationship was a typical shojo romance character willing to doubt and misunderstand everything but they were dating a rational human who was able to diffuse most of that stuff most of the time.

Watched this week's spider and horimiya. The things the spider is fighting really escalated quickly. The human side of the story still remains boring. I think the main issue is that the main human guy is just really dull. Very generic timid good guy vibes.

Horimiya is still quite good although I'm slightly concerned that apparently they skipped a ton of chapters in the manga. Like episode 7 covered up to chapter 37 and then episode 8 is chapter 70. Nothing of plot relevance seems to have been skipped and I don't think I would have noticed at all had comments not talked about it.

IMO the kingdom anime is worth the crappy CGI. The story is just so good and everything else about the anime is great. Well, except that they change up some translations from season 1 to 2. That was pretty annoying. And while the cgi looks bad, it is leveraged well. They have a lot of troops on screen moving and doing stuff.

I'm a little concerned about how the story will go after the current arc. It's the same problem a game of civ runs into. The hardest fights aren't at the end, they are at the middle, but then you still have to tediously go around and close everything out. At a certain point in kingdom, the main army is going to end up stronger than all the rest combined.

Still, the writing has been great so far so I should give it the benefit of the doubt.

Speaking of worries I had that were unfounded, I caught up on horimiya. Still impressed that they've managed to avoid hitting annoying melodrama so far. They keep setting up for it but then averting it. Quite satisfying. Hopefully it stays that way. The art is really nice. It's a fight between jobless reincarnation and horimyia for best new production this season IMO.

Demon Slayer is mostly successful with casual viewers/readers as far as I understand (as will always be the case with the most popular series). There's really nothing that special about it compared to other decent shonen except for the animation in the anime for it (which is why it blew up). I feel like the only decent character in the entire show is the main guy. Everyone else is either painfully basic or extremely annoying. I do like the main guy. He's a much gentler calmer protagonist compared to normal shonen fair. He could easily be the villain in another story if his sister eventually got killed by the other demon slayers. He has a sort of "too pure for this cruel world" thing going on..

Also man, it's success is pretty wild. Anyone watched the current state of shonen jump in 2021 video by that one guy? One piece sold just under 8M volumes, Demon Slayer sold 82M. It so massively dwarfs the previous yearly record. IIRC if you go by individual volumes, demon slayer has the 22 most successful volumes.

Also kingdom outsold one piece last year. Hell yeah for kingdom, can't wait for season 3 of the anime to restart.

Spider is definitely fun but I'm kind of bummed that the spider's growth has skyrocketed so much. I'd have preferred for the rise to be power to be very slow but it's already got quite a few OP abilities and it's stats are gettin up there.

Just watched the latest jobless reincarnation episode and it continues to be the best new anime this season. We also finally see a small sign of rudeus not being a complete bastard every time a girl is vulnerable although he still has a long way to go to reach decent human being status. Even the sparring looks so amazing in this show. Really a masterful production.

Yes it is. The whole stick of love is war is that it treats normal highschool romance like a mind battle death game. It's just that instead of tricking the killer into admitting they killed someone, it's tricking the other person into admitting they brought their umbrella or something relatively inane. They still treat it like it's life or death for them though and thats why it's funny.

It's like the least of slice of life comedy out there. Nearly every scene is an intense competition. Whoever put slice of life in the genres doesn't understand what the slice of life genre entails.

I hope we see internet safety taken as seriously as it always should've been. The benefits would be farther reaching than it seems.

What I mean is that it could be a really helpful tool for increased human rights globally without bloodshed. Have a sort of EU policy where access to, say, the West's internet requires certain human rights and democratic norms be respected or else you're cut out entirely. This could be massively economically damaging to any government unwilling to do the right thing. And could passively result in at least some improvements in a lot of regions.

Obviously, that alone won't solve most domestic or foreign woes online and offline, but I can't see how forcing rights and transparency upon places via the all mighty dollar is a bad thing. I dunno...

I think this is basically punishing the wrong people. It hurts the citizens to have their access to global information cut off more than it does the governments. The most oppressive large government (CCP) already tries to restrict access to as much internet as it can.

On the other hand I feel like actually meeting and interacting with people from other places normalizes them to a degree and makes it seem much easier to coexist. It also means if your government is oppressing you, you have a point of reference to see just how bad it is.

Internet security itself is an unwinnable battle though, no matter how seriously you take it, unless you surveil everyone at all times but that kind of defeats the purpose.

Caught up on horimiya and it's still quite nice.

In vtuber land amatsuka uto finally came back which I'm pretty happy about. She stopped streaming for a month cause she was getting harassed by some artist and vtuber company tried to exploit her and a lot of people were causing her problems but I'm happy to see she sorted it out and is back finally. She had been trying really hard to learn english before hand for her overseas fans and she has made quite a lot of progress.

I think she is one of the biggest independent vtubers sub count wise. A bit over 350k. Actually I'm kind of curious who the most subbed to independents are. The highest I know of is uto with 364k (exact same as pikamee but she is with VOMS). Then artemis of the blue at 207k and I guess Kana (used to be with tsunderia but recently independant) at like 93k but I'm sure theres plenty in the 200K region.

As far as I'm aware the only two non hololive over 1M are still nyanners and of course kizuna ai. I think nyanners is especially impressive since she streams on twitch and not youtube the vast majority of the time.

Kind of? The story isn't any better than before but the action and production values are pretty good. If you didn't like SAO before, I doubt this will change your mind, and if you did like it before you probably will like this. It touches on some interesting sci-fi ideas with artificial human consciousness and ethics regarding it but they don't really say anything very profound about it. The villains still have the SAO problem of just being murderous rapey bastards with no motivation other than being disgusting and evil.

All the pro player reactions to pyra showed me that not enough people have played xenoblade 2 (or 1).

Gameplay wise though I'm happy to have what looks like a fairly fast swordfighter. They showed Mythra at least has a down tilt to up air combo and a throw combo and aerial combos finishing with that special move.

True but I wouldn't be surprised if they drop it on us relatively quickly.

Though I would much rather have a monster from Monster Hunter then the actual hunter. I suppose he could have a very wide arsenal but theres something exciting as playing as a monster and Smash is severely lacking in Heavies anyway.

It'd be pretty weird if they let us play as a monster since rathalos is already in the game and way too big to be a playable character. Even if they picked like a shrunken down diablos or something it'd look really weird next to assist trophy or boss rathalos. They'd also probably be pretty miserable to play as because MH monsters are intentionally much wider than they are tall so you'd have this massive hurtbox that'd get you hit by everything (aka, mewtwos problem).

Realistically they'd probably put in someone from arise for cross promotion since that's supposed to come out some time this year.

I just feel like velvet will play the most enjoyably even though berseria isn't my favorite tales game. Also gets around the anime swordsman complaint.
