I remember my rationale in picking them in the order I did was literally so you might like Enclosed World a bit more because of those last 45 seconds. Strictly speaking, that approach actually worked, but not nearly as well as I'd hoped.

Similar to the last song, this one is a bit lacking in true variation and doesn't have anything which makes it stand out. It has a beat though, which is why I like it a little more. While I wouldn't exactly describe the song as "relaxing", it has this certain vibe to it which makes it good for zoning out. I particularly like it when the piano is introduced, giving the song some much needed melodic elements. It's decent overall.

I'm pleasantly surprised it almost made it out of the bottom third, because honestly I didn't really expect anything resembling a good score for it. It very much is just elevator music, which happens to be a very good thing in its case since it's the lobby theme, but still. I've generally had to wait quite a long time for people to join and it has made the waits significantly more tolerable.

I just noticed bilibili has a tendency to load the first song in a playlist regardless of what one you've set it to. the link isn't inherently incorrect, but just to be safe...

So, I know this is a GBA song, but even by that system's standards, the sound quality / production of this song sounds really terrible to me. It holds the song back, because the content of the song itself is pretty good and could certainly bring it higher than this. The melody could use a couple more sections, since it really just swaps back and forth between two, but I like both of those sections quite a bit. Solid beat and pace, as to be expected from a racing game. I'm digging it - someone really needs to remaster it or something so it doesn't sound like it was recorded on a potato.

fun fact, Initial D: Another Stage actually isn't a racing game. It's an elaborate visual novel QTE kind of game.

I don't think I've really talked much about Hidra this contest.

I didn't take it as far as any of the other Gust songs in either of my favourites brackets besides Salamander and Beat Octopus that I outright forgot were even there until I just checked because I'm kind of neutral on them, and while to be fair that was largely because it was in a 4pack with one of my favourite new finds of the contest in Chaos, it was also very much just my fourth favourite Gust song in the contest. Maybe third.

Still, it's a disservice to consider that such a bad thing. All of those top four were ones that would probably be within my top 20 for the contest, and four of my favourite Gust songs that have appeared to date (the only other one I wish was here is Class::EXSPHERE_NOSURGE;, which I keep forgetting about during noms). Not to mention in its first appearance in VGMC9, it was my favourites pick for its whole bracket over Daddy Mulk (which uh, didn't actually do so hot that contest even with the nonexistent votals). There definitely was a point where I considered it hot shit, and I still do consider it the shit to a degree. Maybe a bit less ever since it murdered my favourite pet nom last contest but that's beside the point. Shit's got a quality solo and a spicy ending, and that's good.

Solid final.

I really didn't expect Nico's Theme/Final Battle ~Unwavering Thoughts in my Heart~/"Scramble" to come out of that contest looking as respectably as it did. I felt it was an achievement that it even made it out of R1, so to be the only thing that really posed a threat to PV all contest is really something else.

Even if I disagree with who the winner of that match should've been, MOtC vs Trombe easily, both of those songs rule.

Side note, Despair of ELFERIA vs Ricordando il Passato is what I did go with for the poll. It didn't even go according to my favourites bracket (I wanted The Final Song), but those are nonetheless two of my all-time favourite retirees without a shadow of a doubt, Ricordando's shockingly good full version especially. Honestly that was probably my favourite single bracket in VGMC history, I'm so glad it didn't get mauled by Megalovania and forgotten.

Man, there are a lot of songs I love that made those semis. Over half of those songs were ones I was really on board with at the time, and distinctly still am now. In the case of two of them, I like 3/4. In the case of one of them, the one I didn't like won, and without host intervention the other one would've too, but hey. These contests have really been generous to me in the closing stages quite a bit over the last few years as a whole. This time? Hard to say. I'm for all of them far more than I anticipated I would be with all the flooding from certain recent JRPGs, but not as strongly for the ones that are here as I was for many of those songs in prior contests. Still, miles better than last year's closing stages.

Had I been around to save Daddy Mulk in its time of need when it forced a tie and proceeded to lose by only one while I was away for both matches, I'd likely be picking that match for the poll. Instead, I only have regrets regarding last contest. Sadness.

Anyway, matches.

Both of the semifinalists in the main bracket here have an interesting common thread to me. I both had them lose in my favourites bracket to songs I only took to round 3. In the case of the former, it was due to it immediately facing one of my top favourites, Besaid Island, which I narrowly picked Deadman Falling over, which I also picked Mystic Pendulum over, which I took Sayonara over.

On the other hand, I took Sunshine Coastline to R2, where it faced Life Will Change. It's a kind of funny situation there, in that I took LWC over it since I felt it exposed weaknesses in SC, being a little bit repetitive among other things. I then took Drifting Souls over it by principle of it being the kind of vocal song I liked more than a Persona song, and I took Fight Between the Wind and the Blinking Sky comfortably over it for its superior orchestration, also taking that to the semis. Despite that, I otherwise considered SC a song on par with that Zestiria song and also Flash Frost. Long story short, while I only took it that far, I largely did it because I felt the match it had did not suit it well more than anything.

So you'd expect me to probably take Sunshine Coastline here. But nope. Laguerra pretty easily, yet again. The first quarter of the bracket was stacked with songs in my overall favourites in the contest, as I've thoroughly covered already. Besaid Island was very likely in my top 10. Neo Kobe City was around my top 20 songs, and I also wanted to support it in the stead of the aforementioned Daddy Mulk. Deadman Falling was also skirting around the top 10 (maybe a little outside it now), and I was keen to see Nekomata Master songs continue to perform well. Mystic Pendulum was easily within my top 5 (maybe top 3 or 2), and there were a handful of others up near it in that corner too. Sunshine Coastline is certainly up there as far as personally unfavourable draws go, but Laguerra del Mundo was in my personal hell division. Granted, even I thought I'd be taking SC here, but I'm not surprised that it turned out like this.

As for the side bracket, it was nearly a similar situation. Xeus I only took to R2, where I had it almost arbitrarily job to She Wants Me Dead, before having that in turn almost arbitrarily job to Melodies of Life. Preserved Valkyria meanwhile got a mighty 8pack, and while I did take it out of there, it was a very tough call between it and Innocence and Emptiness. Definitely my second favourite song that lost in R1 in that side bracket right there after High School LoveBlue Skies, even though I didn't even take it out of there. It has to be said though, I didn't expect this match to be remotely in question, and yet... Well, I still have to go with PV, but I did have to pause and genuinely consider Xeus here. Good final.

somehow I'm yet again still in with a chance to take a bracket. Really didn't see it coming this time around.

Interesting story. And yeah, that Smiles and Tears match really got me. That's one of those cases where you can't give up on a song just because it loses R1. Of course, for every validated story, there's 31 others that it wasn't worth the fight.

yes. circumstances have constantly worked against it as far as getting my vote has been concerned, despite it being roughly around my top 30ish in the contest overall, probably. Of the 16 other songs left in the main bracket, I'd only vote for four over it.

In This Cage

Three years ago, Laguerra del Mundo made VGMC for the first time. It didn't leave much of a mark on me at the time (or indeed the contest in general), at least not compared to the very solid and surprisingly catchy Rapal, but I considered it decent for what it was. On that occasion, it had the misfortune of facing Smiles and Tears, which I am definitely quite fond of. I'd already taken Laguerra there regardless in my favourites bracket but come match day, I couldn't go against Smiles and Tears.

The following year, in VGMCX, it had similar misfortune, being placed in a surprisingly solid B1 containing the likes of TBIYTC, KoaFC, eventual winner Despair of ELFERIA and others that I found to be surprisingly good as well (including its first round opponent, #X). It made it to round 3 that year, and I narrowly ended up picking its opponents over it in each of those rounds. Admittedly #X was a bit of a pity vote in retrospect, but hey. A vote's a vote.

Last year, it was cruelly placed against my own pet nom, Sai-Hate Galaxy, in R1, so naturally I couldn't vote for it there. Then it ran into Rising Up, a song from Tales of Zestiria. Not my favourite song from Zestiria that's been in the contests to date, but far from a pushover either. It was quite a close call. Then in round 3 it ended up facing off against Into the Light, which I'd taken to the bracket finals in my favourites bracket (despite also facing one of my noms in R1). It's appeal has worn off on me a bit since then, but I liked it quite a lot at that time. Finally, in the retirement round, it ended up against Whereabouts of Light. That one was especially tough to decide, but ultimately I wanted to see Whereabouts of Light retire more, being not only a solid song, but also the lone vocal song remaining.

So coming into this contest, I had voted against Laguerra no less than eight times. Slap on a few more for its matches against Besaid, Neo Kobe City and Deadman Falling (all three pretty high up there as some of my favourites in this contest) and here we are.

Mystic Pendulum is my second favourite song in the bracket after Sayonara, so had it been here, this would've just been yet another match where Laguerra had the misfortune of drawing yet another (rare!) song I like more than it despite the rest of the bracket being a bit of a travesty. Instead... we get this. A farce where I actually find myself taking it easily. How about that.

Oh yeah also the side bracket match is really good today.

First match pretty hard, other two really easy. Danger Zone is nice, to be fair, but Invitation of the Butterfly has really not aged well to me. Honestly really close to being my least favourite song in all of Bracket A... Also, it's a bit of shame my favourite of the songs from DS/3DS games that were clustered together in this little corner of the bracket (Tokyo) didn't make it this far. Mind you, I didn't expect it to make it past Banbard in the first place so I guess it's a moot point.

no, it's just that there hasn't been a single song from zestiria to make it into the contests to date (all of which I believe he's done) that I haven't considered amazing, and this is absolutely no exception at all.

I still remember one time when one of my all time personal favourite pet noms that made it in, which of all things was another Go Shiina song from Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy, received a death sentence to another Zestiria song (I believe it was Flaming Bonds but I might be wrong), and was thoroughly trounced. And I couldn't really blame people, even I honestly preferred it to my nom.

but yeah I just really dig his songs from zestiria. kinda crazy to think that he only did barely like... an eighth of the songs in the soundtrack overall, if that

Really great second match. Narrowly siding with the Zestiria song because Go Shiina has too many top tier songs in that game, but I am kind of hoping flash frost advances because sunshine coastline vs it would be a pretty damn cool match.

Also had a harder time going with mystic pendulum in the tb than I did initially. The other songs today somehow kind of got me in the right mindset to actually enjoy BAaTH today, it seems.
