Was this composed for a game, or is it from some sort of Doujin album? (Or something else entirely altogether?)

So Ray Kudryavka is a freeware doujin shmup series that dates back to the late 90s i think, lasting up until the mid-00s. From the second entry (X) onwards this nagi guy volunteered to produce the soundtracks for it (inspired by the quality of the first entry which lacked bgm altogether). This soundtrack album happened after a few games, and apparently this was basically the culmination of his efforts over those years. I think he said something like that this was exactly the song he wanted to make when he originally offered to do them. So it's basically... all of the above? (okay, only the first two)

It's also the only song on that soundtrack album that i know for certain where it originated, since the games don't run nowadays and there's pretty much no footage of any of them, so I don't actually know which games the other ones came from. This one though, definitely never used in any of the games. Or at least, not before this album.

also yeah the games and the soundtracks are way too good to not be on youtube but they aren't because... shrug. apparently these games were pretty popular, there's about as many fanbooks and doujins of them as games like Suguri and Hellsinker but weirdly the series seems very obscure (almost totally unknown) in the west.

Her sounding fairly different here was a major reason I included it, since otherwise I'd pretty much settled on not sharing her again, given that iirc i didn't get a single positive reaction across like... 6 songs prior, maybe? i'm also not very observant so i might be way off there lol. Now yes, that is indeed a big list. 20 songs. But it actually could've been bigger. With the exception of the last one, I exclusively picked out songs from a playlist on Yanmi's channel. Turns out she was responsible for the videos of a considerable number (but not all) of them, which are actually really good. A very multitalented person in general really. i like the second half of midy's song because it reminds me of some songs in gran turismo 3... or maybe 4. there's at least one in particular kinda like it, from daiki kasho. also, the whole collab oddly feels a lot like the "soundtrack" to halfpipe tokyo. sure, they're not forced to all be exactly 82 seconds like those are, but the range of styles feel pretty similar which I find kind of interesting.

this person just posted a new video for the first time in basically forever and it reminded me of this song, which was the one other thing from them I've watched. it was in the same video contest as ruri's cover of uh... tsumi no namae and came second in the music category (which ruri won). a vtuber fan (he's also been a fan of ruri's since before that contest) who happens to have his own avatar actually got third with an original rap over some royalty free bgm... it wasn't a very competitive category. that YUGAREY guy who I posted that endearingly bad ECHO cover of was also in that and honestly I'm surprised he didn't place. but yeah. as is sadly par for the course for entrants in that competition, she's very much a failed vtuber, and an international one at that. also has a bilibili account except somehow it's even more unsuccessful. i was surprised to find that she's still around at all. she has a very... straightforward aura, i feel, and it's a shame nobody recognised that.

but yeah i didn't directly say this before since i didn't want to compromise synchro's chances but bin is by far my actual favourite kaf cover period, and synchro is my favourite kaf take on a song. i more or less expected things to pan out this way, and I'm still glad they did

also, probably a very good call on the delay before diving into the ao stuff. the first one is a very acquired taste of a song. her cover of it is actually spot-on for what they're going for with it, but it may not necessarily seem that way.

I finally checked, and I evidently actually did bring it up already (without linking), but Synchrocyclotron was the first thing i watched from Kaf. There are finally a couple of other covers of it out there now, but none actually match hers despite being great in their own right. This is a kind of song spoiler here but one that you probably won't understand until you hear it. Kaf nails that last "ta?" in a way only she can, sounding basically exactly halfway between a chord change and an inquisitive question, and it shows especially compared to other covers. It's deceptive how difficult actually pulling that off is. It's not an inherent "Kaf" song like the real, Kanzaki Iori-composed ones are and can't compete with them, but it's a song that nevertheless allowed her to play to her strengths really well.

bin is as far as you can get from any other Kaf song, cover or otherwise. It's more the kind of thing you'd expect to hear covered by someone like Ryushen instead (which she did). Unexpectedly though, it was also a great fit for Kaf. Ryushen's cover doesn't really deliver so Kaf's is also easily my favourite for it too. I was exploding when I was watching the live premiere for it, impulse subscribed to the original composer, etc etc. bin is culture.

Incidentally, Ryushen has also covered No Doubt, and more recently Tenjin Kotone too, but they failed to win me over enough to ever post them. Aer's version really blows them out of the water. It's surprising that hers differs so much from them as well as the original, because her version feels like exactly what the song needed to sound like in the first place. I'm excitedly hoping she has genuine prospects of getting a lot of attention because of it.

a minor note. i recommend sorting it diorama drama -> synchrocyclotron -> bin -> no doubt if those two songs aren't there. probably the best way to maintain playlist flow there since no doubt is a pretty different kind of song to diorama and synchrocyclotrom

at least your scoring seems consistent with that one at the time. kotone's is definitely the better one and it suited her a lot more, but it felt kind of obligatory to still post emma hazy's with its production values on its music video

as a side note, regarding the parade "cover", it's surely obvious from just the imagery alone, but the big joke of it was just that she revealed that she was basically just a normal person behind the camera unlike her character setting "implied", and that to make up for that and make that setting a reality she'd decided to give her all as an idol now, only to belt that out and piss off the neighbours. it's meant to be bad, so... yes. very standard stuff really but i thought it was an amusing enough thing to include as part of a gag section there alongside middle aged men failing to become magical girls and whatever's going on in the following two covers

yeah that all went about as i expected

i expected the starbear fanza to be very noticeably lower than the project aid song and i was worried it'd be so much worse that it'd also negatively affect whatever score the otome kaigou cover got after it (which is surprisingly one of the best ones i've heard, and it's a very common song to see covered). uranus is just really good. i didn't expect project aid to come back to the level they were at with those initial hated by life itself covers, let alone with an original song. i'm not always big on that kind of song but it really suits them.

also can't say i have seen nightwalker. I might check it out

disagree on the leona hanasaka step cover but i'm glad it wasn't a waste for me to include it

i'd deliberately included it largely to serve as a reminder of mitsuki neu's cover more than anything, but i guess while it worked, it definitely also backfired oops. incidentally, neu/wotoha's Jelly Girl album finally came out on BOOTH the other day and it's quite good (even if you're forced to take these words with a grain of salt now). i still recommend checking it out if you can find it

regarding the next set of songs, i'm personally going to recommend saving the starbear cover till after otome kaigou (the one after it)... mostly because i expect the scores to be pretty lopsided and maybe skewed otherwise

i didn't exactly sort the list in an order that was ideal for listening to in order. it was actually just by when they were first posted >_>. incidentally, i didn't even listen to tokyo emotion in my listening session, i just happened to find out it was posted straight after the amazing grace cover i'd have never included if it wasn't a very convenient song to showcase vivi specifically. i also don't think it's a much of a standout cat song either, it was just an auto-inclusion

regarding the one piece cover, i also didn't care much for the cover, i mainly decided to include it because i realised i hadn't posted a single ukelele cover from nabana nana until now, despite that being her main gimmick

i also haven't played animal crossing, joke kk slider songs just happened to be a thing i got into in the past thanks to brawl and it wasn't really a thing i'd seen anyone try to do, so i thought that was kind of charming. anon has been a bit of a fad of the month vtuber for me, since this she also did one of the funnier april fools videos and has also been doing interesting (read: ironically, not excessive amounts of animal crossing) streams lately so i've been checking her out a lot more. i'd de facto classified her as one of the least interesting members of her vtuber group until now, and a much worse singer than some, but with the more cute shitposty things she's done lately my opinion's kind of changed

yeah even i'm very on the fence about ryushen songs and i also feel they're extremely inconsistent for whatever reason. only reason i included itsurai was because i realised it was apparently an original song so it was more "important" and stuff, i didn't even like it at all

lastly, sorry that i pressured you on the writeups, i understand where you're coming from and can't blame you with how much i've forced on you here (even if i also forced it and another like hundred worse songs on myself in doing so)

either way it is an insanely popular song from a mega artist with 346 million views on youtube (and is also a theme song for a Shaft film of roughly the same name) so it's also understandable if you've heard it before (i haven't actually watched it myself though)

Haven't listened to anything else yet, but I just want to take a moment to say that I hope the next Neptunia spin-off gets translated. I just read some confirmation that Hibiki Ao makes a cameo appearance and now I feel obligated to play it.
