Domains and bosses. You'll get to a point where in order to progress further in levels you need items who only drop from things that require Resin to open the chest they leave behind. The game definitely doesn't give enough as higher levels need so much more resin drops to progress.

Very early in the game there actually isn't any way to spend resin. The first thing that unlocks that you can use resin on are let lines. I recommend experience over gold.
