Been stuck in for about 3 weeks, but I am already so used to isolation, as a disabled person, that I don't expect much trouble putting up with more of it. Provided that my support worker can still help with supplies, that the young woman who's walking my dog & picking up my meds can keep doing that, and that my caregivers keep coming as they should, I can likely do this for the rest of the year without upset, if I have to. I'm used to communication with friends and family at a distance.

As I said... I'm used to being almost as isolated as this 24/7, it isn't that new to me. And maybe after this less non-disabled people will go round saying "I'd love to sit at home all day the way you do." (While totally disregarding chronic pain, chronic fatigue, impaired ability to do a lot of the things they would do if stuck indoors for months.)

Return to normal life I'm sorry but the jobs have stopped but the bills haven't I literally cannot afford to sit in the house all day.

In which case, UBI needs to be implemented for the length of the quarantine. Going back to work because you can't afford not to will only make the whole thing worse, especially if it comes in waves like the 1918 outbreak did.

For my part, I don't mind carrying on at the kind of level of quarantine that's currently in place in the UK for a while longer. I'm used to that sort of isolation, honestly, and I think it might bring home to the non-disabled among us just what those of us who are often housebound have to endure every damn day.

I just wish they'd sort out the grocery delivery services properly already, they're a mess & I'm stressed out that I can't get a slot for weeks, and that may be even worse if the companies decide to prioritise the people the government have decided are most at risk, because they didn't bother to include half the people who *would* be, or those of us who already ordered online regularly due to mobility issues. That, and certain horrendous provisions of the Coronavirus Bill the Tories have just passed, including rolling back the Care Act 2014 in its entirety, really bother me. The latter essentially meaning that disabled people who need help with personal care etc but won't die immediately if left without it won't be able to *get* that care anymore if they can't afford it, as the majority of disabled people can't. And would you be happy to be left sitting in your own waste for days, as that may do to some care recipients without family? It'll be bad for me, but much worse for people even less mobile than I am.

Anyway, I went tl;dr, sorry. But if we don't hold down the quarantine now, our medical services won't be capable of helping us when we need them.

It's not being properly enforced, certainly not here, where it's been designated as for elderly and vulnerable adults. As if most disabled or chronically ill people are able to get up and out that early, between meds and caregiver visits? I'm sure not.

Last time I was out for a medical appointment that early I wound up puking and nearly fainting when I got to the hospital, just because my system couldn't deal. So I don't think shopping would be an improvement - even if I could risk leaving the house at all, since I'd likely die if I caught this crud. The furthest I've been in 3 weeks or more is out on the balcony.

What they should be doing is prioritising online grocery delivery for two groups: those of us who used it regularly before the virus because of impaired mobility or vulnerability, and those who are newly vulnerable or self-isolating and haven't anyone to go out for them. (My agency caregivers are already overworked & short-staffed, without adding more duties.)

No, you're being an ass and mocking people who actually do prefer gender-neutral pronouns. Quit.

There are a number of different variations, but "you", "y'all", "them", "they" & "their" are all gender-neutral by definition, and can be singular or plural. Then "ze", "sie", "xe" are all neutral equivalents of "he" or "she", with "zir", "hir" or "xer" as equivalents to "his" or "her". Those are the most common neutrals in use. For anyone who actually cares and wants to know.

Not me, and never have. My family home didn't have a basement (it was an upper-level maisonette), & I moved out when I was 21. Spent 6 months living with my sister, then 2 years in shared housing, a few more months with a cousin while I tried to find somewhere else away from the landlady from hell, and finally got an apartment of my own 10 years ago. It's not the same one I live in now - that one was demolished when the area was regenerated some years back - but I can definitively say that I have never lived in anyone's basement (or cellar as we're more likely to call them here), let alone my parents'.

I take it you mean e-readers?

I currently have a Kobo Touch, a standard Kindle, a Kindle Paperwhite, a Kobo Arc, a Kindle Fire (8gb) and a Nook. I've also owned a Kindle Keyboard and a Sony PRS-505. In addition to those I use Kindle, Aldiko & various other apps on my Android, and Calibre on my laptop. (Can you tell I read a lot?)

Of all of these, the Sony was my favourite in terms of operation & features, but both of the two I owned died pretty quickly - so much so that I suspected planned obsolescence. The Paperwhite and Fire were the only designated devices I bought new, everything else was lightly used as per my usual habits.

The Kindle won't read the epub files that are the industry standard format for every other e-reader out there, which can be downright infuriating, but the Paperwhite is a good piece of kit, and if you have a Kindle that dies on you Amazon will often give you money off a new one, no matter where you bought the old one (that being how I wound up with a Paperwhite after buying a standard Kindle used that kept freezing on me).

Kobo has a decent proprietary store, the same way Amazon does, but they don't lock down their formats in the same way. Nook has a store, but it only seems to work in North America.

Aldiko is a free app for Android with a paid version. The basic version has most of the functions you may want for reading an ebook, with the exception of highlighting and notation that's become so common for e-reader users, but if you're new to that you may not miss it. It's very customisable in terms of screen use; if you're okay reading from a phone a lot it won't be much trouble, and you can change background colour, fonts, text colour, contrast etc pretty easily.

Most designated e-readers are better for long-term reading simply because of the type of screen they have, e-Ink. The storage is more than needed for the average reader on most e-readers; I have 3000+ documents and books on my Paperwhite with space to spare, and this is because most e-books, unless they're graphic novels with huge amounts of jpg or png files, or big pdfs, are quite small in size, often below 10mb even for a longer book.

Just one note, though... my sister has panic attacks trying to use e-readers, seemingly triggered by the way the black and white invert when you move to the next screen of whatever you're doing or reading. I've never seen that in anyone before or since, but felt I ought to mention it just in case. You may want to try somebody else's before you buy your own if that might be a problem for you. I know it wasn't psychosomatic, because she really wanted that e-reader and was very upset she couldn't use one.

Hope that helps!

I'm hoping I won't, because I might actually die if I do.

That said, my daily life is already 80% isolated, with only caregivers in regular contact, so that may help. I live in an apartment building, and between that and my home-care I can't cut myself off entirely, especially with my dog still needing to be walked (she's well-trained, and will not do her business on the balcony!), but I'm doing my best.

A young woman from my local mutual aid group has been coming round to take Pixie for walks (she always stays at least 2 metres away from me, as proscribed) and bring me groceries since the online delivery services are overwhelmed (I couldn't get a delivery slot for 10 days, & in some areas it's as much as 14), & I'm being careful to wipe down the pup's leash and collar and my new shopping, just in case, & my hands regularly, & I've been trying not to touch my face too much (I wear glasses, so it's impossible to not touch my face at all).

If I'm lucky, and my caregivers are cautious, it may be months before I catch it. I just hope I can make it through when I do. 3 of my relatives have died of pneumonia, the last just last November.

*sigh* Okay. Where to begin. Mostly minor stuff compared to actually catching it, but:

- Ludovico Einaudi concert tonight postponed (he's stuck in his native Italy); Tarja concert + meet-and-greet next week also postponed (things are starting to get worse for Finland); on top of that, Evanescence & Within Temptation at the end of April also postponed... :(

- My GP surgery began this week by handing out the few printed prescriptions they still do (mainly controlled drugs) from the outside window rather than allowing people to enter the waiting room to get them, before stopping all routine in-person appointments for the duration, and yesterday closing entirely until the outbreak is over...

My online grocery shop was delayed by a day because everybody's suddenly ordering online (I regularly do it, being disabled), & when I got it half the dog food was a brand my German Shepherd won't eat...

And finally, this morning my agency caregiver turned up in full PPE: mask, hairnet, double gloves, apron & shoe covers.

Sigh. I'm glad I'm not really at risk yet, since if I do get it I might be seriously ill (if I didn't actually die!), and I'd be so worried about the dog if I wound up in hospital, but so far things have been pretty tedious. I rarely get to go out after dark, so I really look forward to gigs when I get to go to them. This sucks :(

Sounds more like the flu than COVID-19. No nasal issues with coronavirus, from all I've researched. My GP practice has closed to all routine in-person appointments as of yesterday, and they're handing prescriptions out of the window rather than let people come into the waiting room because it's such a confined space that keeping a metre apart couldn't happen.

Given I'm high-risk, I'm more concerned at this point than I have been to date, but not panicking, yet. Nor am I panic-buying. I'm hacked off with people who are doing all their grocery shopping online who don't yet need to, though, I had nearly a 3-day wait for my usually-next-day-delivery shop because I couldn't get a free slot until really late on the 2nd day after my order. Grr. Nearly ran out of dog food! (Not that I think many of the healthy people starting to worry in all this are giving a thought to those of us who already have health-limited ability to leave our homes...)

1 of the 2 gigs I was meant to be going to over the next 2 weeks has been postponed (the artist is Italian), and I'm waiting to see if the other will be (she's Finnish, but has had to postpone the Barcelona date of her tour so far). I'm meant to be doing a meet-and-greet at that one, too...

*shrugs* I remember both, but I wasn't a big fan of either of them. Far as the Crows are concerned, I like "Anna Begins" a lot better.

It took some warming up to, but I'm actually playing it enough just now to be working on 100% for both PS3 & 360 versions, and that's a good 400 hours of playing it, so... *shrugs cheerfully*

I'll buy the "herd immunity" argument for polio and smallpox. It's certainly much less compelling with things as ubiquitous as varieties of flu and pneumonia.

And I had to look up "skiving", I thought it probably had to do with skivvy underwear, but, no, it's slicing. And in Britain, can mean cutting school.

You know, since I mentioned class, I'd have thought you'd assume that that was the definition I was using. I'm not exactly under the radar about my nationality

Frankly, I'm glad that comment was deleted, because yes, Wolf, it was unequivocally hateful, inaccurate and abusive.

Let me help you. Here's a video of a man with the actual condition explaining that they are the same thing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B_n9gseSZAA&t=27s

That one person says that does NOT make it the case, FYI. I know plenty of people who are trans, and a handful of people who have DID/are multiples. None of my trans friends are multiples, but it's natural that within a DID system of mixed gender, some of the personas will experience a bit of dysphoria, unless they're also intersex. So I can see where that person or system might get that idea, but it's like... how do I put this? It's possible to be DID and trans, it's even likely that someone who has DID/is multiple will be trans, but it does NOT work the other way around. Being trans doesn't automatically dictate that someone is also multiple, and I think that's where you're tripping up.

I'm non-binary and genderqueer, but I'm in no sense or fashion a multiple system. I am just one person inside my head, at all times.

Try getting your information from more than just a couple of randomers on YouTube, and stop trying to contradict people who know the facts from personal experience.

I believe I said intelligent use of vaccine and "universal" yearly flu shots for adults. At risk for dying from flu? Okay, probably worth the risk. Normal healthy adult, 2 chances in a million vaccine doses of life-threatening side effects, yearly from age 30-70, is 80 chances in a million, still miniscule except to the unlucky losers of that lottery.
And this is where herd immunity becomes an issue again. Or were you skiving when they covered that in science class?
