Say what you will about genwunners, but dungeons/caves were IMO decisively at their best in Gens 1 and 2 (esp. 2). The Safari Zone, Silph Co. and Kanto Victory Road are truly exciting to explore. GSC areas like Ice Cave, Goldenrod Underground and Whirl Islands are perhaps even better and were highly ambitious for their era.

The dungeon designs fell off hard in Gen III though, IMO, and never fully recovered.

I really just miss a full-fledged Victory Road at this point, because you can always count on those "Ace Trainer" types being enjoyable to fight.

Is that Morgrem a higher level than your Pokemon facing it? If so, it sounds like you're affected by the new catch rate system.

Game Freak decided it would be cute to drastically increase the catch rate of a Pokemon if yours is lower-level. Even by a single level. Insert massive eyeroll here.

Yeah, I can't think of a single other Nintendo-published Switch game that looks worse than Sword and Shield. Even Pokemon Let's Go looked better, and that definitely wasn't the prettiest girl at the dance either.

I'm not sure we could've gotten a polished game even if they pulled a Unova and only put new Pokmon in the dex.

I'm inclined to agree here. I don't think the issue is that Game Freak still has too many Pokemon, items, moves, etc. to put in the game. I think the issue is that the company is operated by risk-adverse Luddites.

For three generations now, GF has demonstrated that they... as Mallory Archer would say, "can't or won't" properly adapt to the 3D landscape. At this point, I don't see that happening unless they bring in fresh blood, and lots of it, or partner with another company.

Until one of those happens, we're just going to keep getting games that are reasonably fun for a time because the Pokemon formula is that damn good, but never rise above the level of reheated leftovers. Games like Sword and Shield.

Im going the other way, I didnt like how it looked or how it made me feel to be inside. It has a really low ceiling compared to other airports that Ive been to. Im glad my flight was on time, so I didnt have stay too long.

The TSA line moved at a good pace, so DFW has that going for it.

I do remember Terminal C having an unusually low ceiling and feeling much older. I've had much better experiences in the other terminals, though, especially D (the fancy int'l terminal) and E (super quiet and recently renovated).

Great thread. I find airports endlessly fascinating, and comforting too.

When I went to Singapore, I stayed overnight at Singapore Changi Airport (SIN) upon landing late, instead of paying for an extra hotel night. I'd totally do that again. Simultaneously binging "Super Mario Odyssey" and white coffee from The Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf was a magical experience. That gets my vote for favorite airport.

I'll go against the grain and say that I really love Dallas Fort Worth (DFW) too. It gets a bad rap because of flight delays, and I've been on the receiving end of that. But my God, you have Cousins BBQ and La Creme Coffee in the same airport. That has to count for something. And the whole facility is just so damn pleasing aesthetically.

Some other highlights:

-Anchorage (ANC) styles its overhead lights after the Northern Lights, and it's beautiful at night. You can also get reindeer sausage there, and that's one of those foods you have to eat before you die.

-Bozeman (BZN) has fireplaces on the landside, and is impeccably clean all around. This airport immediately puts you at ease, whether you're coming or going.

-Salt Lake City (SLC) is great about keeping amenities open for late-night travelers, and the workers are friendly and efficient too.

On the flipside, I'm not too crazy about Charlotte (CLT) or Houston George Bush Int'l (IAH) - I try to avoid those if possible. But of course, I'll gladly take those layovers if the price is right for the flight.

I honestly would have preferred it if Gmax Pokemon were just straight-up event giveaways, instead of this half-measure BS they went with. At least then, players wouldn't be essentially bamboozled into virtually uncatchable Gmax raids, like they are now.

It's easy for us to see a non-event Gmax raid online and say "not worth it," now that sites like Serebii have spilled the beans on the catch rates. But not everyone has that information, especially younger fans, so these bollocks Gmax raids are just going to frustrate people and potentially make them lose interest in the game.

I know I've had a lot to say about Gigantamax, but cripes, I haven't hated a game mechanic this much since tripping in Brawl.

-If you just want to "shut up and battle your Pokemon," this game more or less allows you to do so, instead of stopping you every two seconds with "malasadas" and "NEBBY GET IN THE BAG". Between this and the QoL improvements, this really is one of the better campaigns in the series IMO. However, I also see how people who play Pokemon for the story would dislike it.

As annoyed as I am at the lack of story, I will say this is a plus for those that just like to do extra playthroughs using different Pokemon. Like I think there's a good chance I might just create new profiles to try a few mono-type runs or something, and having less disruptions will be nice for those.

Agreed! To expand on this, they also did a great job improving the variety of early-game Pokemon. This is true even prior to the Wild Area, though the WA certainly helps a lot too.

I played Pokemon Pearl for the first time earlier this year, and the early-game difference is truly night-and-day.

After playing the campaign + dabbling in the postgame, here are my key pros and cons. I'm gonna try to keep these reasonably short - except one point I have to sound off about. Feel free to "Ok boomer" me if that's even a thing still. Minor spoilers below.

THE GOOD:

-They knocked it out of the park with the designs this gen. I can confidently say that this is my favorite batch of new Pokemon since Kanto; it's that good. Even the humans are well-designed, save for Hop being Galarian Hau.

-The soundtrack is great. Turffield has my favorite town song since Ecruteak City in GSC. The Chairman Rose battle music is my favorite boss tune in the series. Those are some highlights, but really, the whole thing sounds damn decent.

-There are some great QoL changes - Corviknight Taxi, no more random battles, rental Pokemon at the Battle Tower, nature mints, etc. I appreciate 'em a lot.

-The Wild Area is a solid addition, even though it's uglier than sin and lags like crazy while online. Mechanically, it's good fun for the most part and I enjoy non-Gmax raids a lot in particular.

THE BAD:

-Dexit. Won't beat this dead horse though.

-The graphics. Another dead horse; no elaboration needed. I will say that I'm struggling to think of a single other Nintendo-published Switch game that looks less appealing visually.

-A general lack of ambition/exciting innovation on Game Freak's part. Oh hey, a third dead horse I won't beat!

-The online seems to be getting better, but still, lol

-Whoever was in charge of the catch rates this gen deserves to be sacked with no chance of rehire. This actually isn't a dead horse, and I'm surprised it hasn't pissed off more people.

The fact that they jacked up the catch rates of Pokemon who outlevel yours is obnoxious during the campaign and feels unnecessary (even a bit callous? Like, why). But the big offenders, of course, are the Gigantamax catch rates. Between the absurdly low odds of finding non-event Gmax Pokemon, and the absurdly low odds of catching the fuckers, Gmax hunting - one of the few appealing postgame activities here - is rendered insufferable.

This is carrot-on-a-stick design philosophy at its worst, folks, and I don't blame anyone at all for doing the raid exploit - even though that, too, is a joyless pursuit.

...
All things considered, I think this gen is like a 6.5-7/10. Much like how Gen 6 was a "good enough" game for 3DS owners, this feels good enough if you just want mainline Pokemon on your new-ish device. I mean, barring some insanity, mainline Pokemon will always be fun at least. I don't regret buying it at all, especially since I got a decent deal, but it's no must-have either.
