I keep up with this topic just to try keeping on top of some political news...though I'm inclined to skip a few hundred posts every once in a while when you guys go on some awful tangent.

Anyway, I have no idea who any of the people are in that video, at least on a name recognition basis. As such, definitely not going to watch because who cares (he says somewhat ironically) what I bunch of internet-randos have to say.

First listen was more positive than 36 Chambers. Looking forward to some more plays as it was kind of a lot to take in. There's at least 1 or 2 songs (maybe more?) where I feel like it just completely flips halfway through the track.

This'll be a slightly funny comparison but for myself I put this in the same bucket as I do Crack the Skye. You can tell me both are excellent examples of their specific subgenre but that doesn't mean I'm going to personally love them or truly appreciate what makes them special.

Thank you both for the information. As someone not well versed in music history (especially rap) it felt like "rap", as we know broadly know it today, had to have come out of the late 80s/early 90s, so I assumed Wu Tang was a progenitor. Which I guess they are, but not of someone like Kanye, who I guess branches back to a different node in the rap tree.

My history with rap is mostly whatever broke through to broad mainstream radio and Eminem (and his adjacents like D12). Almost by definition those are going to fall under the banner of pop rap. Of course I know about older groups like Run DMC (because of Aerosmith...) and Sugar Hill Gang (at least Rapper's Delight...) but I wouldn't know who to trace back to as the origin of Kanye, Jay-Z, Eminem, etc.

In terms of the production/beats/instrumentality. There's nothing like Power or Runaway here that makes me sit back and notice, at least on a first listen. Everything felt like it had those same early 90s beats, which, you know, makes sense, but music has also evolved quite a bit since then. Maybe that's a crap take but I have no familiarity with this album, so I always like to jot down my initial impression of albums I haven't heard before.

I always find it funny the vacced people who sometimes wear a mask. It's always in stores where you're basically always moving around and not getting continually close to people. But at the gym when you're breathing heavy or in a restaurant when you're sitting in (relative) close proximity to people for a long period of time? Nah, we good.

In NoVA, there's a large amount of people still wearing masks everywhere.

I was down in SC for Memorial Day and while there's a lot less people wearing masks, I was surprised that there was still a decent sized chunk (say 20-30%) still wearing them at various stores.

Naturally I caught a cold from a family member down there and had to wear my mask for the last week when indoors to be a good person and hopefully not spread my cold around. Felt good though knowing that you can wear one while feeling a little under the weather and go about your business.

Oh hey, I'm a bit late to the conversation, but vocals are a bit of a thing for me as well. In that I -really- do not like them. I'm someone that tends to sometimes mishear what's being said, so I've never really been all that good at processing lyrics in music. But sometimes I feel like, whenever vocals come up in music some part of me forcibly tries to process them anyway, at the cost of being able to enjoy the music. As if parts of me that would be enjoying the music are instead forced into being used more into trying to understand what's being said. Dunno if that's actually the case, but the existence of vocals definitely block out my enjoyment of songs >99% of the time, so I essentially just want to listen to instrumental pieces.

Though another part of the thing is, a huge part of what I personally love in music is like, letting the sounds kinda bring me into another world away from this reality. So I'll love weird unnatural, electronic synth sounds over traditional orchestral instrumentations, but that's yet another case against vocals because hearing a person talk would only bring me back to earth when I'd prefer to explore elsewhere. But I still won't like songs that use heavily edited/synthesized lyrics either, so there's more to it than just that.

I can agree with a lot of this. Non-lyrical songs (for me that's typically EDM type stuff) has a way of "unwrapping the knots in my brain" (as I like to think about it). I don't get stuck trying to concentrate on the lyrics, oftentimes leading me to frustration, and instead just relax and feel the music.

Seanchan

Did I enjoy the end of the Wheel of Time? Yes but maybe mostly because we got an ending at all and it wasn't completely terrible.

The question of whether Sanderson did a better job than Jordan would have is basically unanswerable. The fact is, the series got entirely unmanageable/unwieldy in the middle, to the point where I actually stopped reading the books when they were released. The books between Crowd of Swords to Crossroads of Twilight suck. They just suck. Six amazing books that my teen-aged self loved and read through multiple times, then 4 fucking books in a row that were interminably bad. Like holy fucking christ, someone edit this man please.

Knife of Dreams was a step back in the right direction. Then RIP Mr. Jordan.

I congratulate Sanderson for just getting the damn series over the finish line. I think they really did pick the right person for the job. Obviously he has a different style than Jordan. More modern, more plot focused and less getting stuck in the unimportant details. It's why his own personal writing (Mistborn, Stormlight, etc.) is so successful. He's a man that HAS a plan and EXECUTES that plan. He avoids the trap that nearly every other fantasy epic writer falls into, where it feels like they're just making shit up as they go along.

So yes, there's a distinct style shift for the last 3 books. As people have said, his female characters are better but Mat just falls off a cliff. You win some, you lose some.

I loved The Gathering Storm. Might be my second favorite in the series after The Great Hunt. It felt like such a breath of fresh air and I loved Rand's arc in that book. I will never know if Jordan could have done that better. Was it the plot itself that got to me or was it enhanced by the particular writing style that Sanderson brought?

The last 2 books I'm less high on. As others have said, there were just too many plot threads and characters to keep track of, which is not Sanderson's fault. Aside from the main characters, it was hard to care/remember too much about the B and C tier characters by the time A Memory of Light was released. The whole thing of characters sometimes being reincarnated as other characters didn't help either. It's been a few years, but I remember wanting more of an epilogue to know more about what happened to the characters afterward.

When it comes down to it, it's hard to actually recommend The Wheel of Time when it's 14 books long and it falls so damn flat in the middle. The series needs to be re-edited down to a more manageable, say, 10 books length, but that'll never happen. I know there's a TV series in the works; hopefully it's capable of condensing the magic of the series into a palatable form.

I can't listen to Work It without thinking about Gossip Folks:

Granted, the latter is really elevated by the Ludacris verses but still. I haven't heard much Missy Elliott aside from these but they are still really fun songs that I find myself coming back to 1-2 times a year.

Make sure to work your way up, slowly, to the minute per set. This IS going to kick your ass.

  1. Get Innocuous!
  2. Us v Them
  3. Watch the Tapes
  4. Sound of Silver
  5. All My Friends
  6. North American Scum
  7. Someone Great
  8. Time to Get Away
  9. New York, I Love You But You're Bringing Me Down
This is a really strong album, outside of the last song, which does nothing for me (but can easily be skipped since it's at the end). There's just a lot of sick beats and head bopping. Some of the songs are a bit long and repetitive but when you're enjoying them that doesn't really matter too much. This is an album I will be coming back to in the future and it makes me want to dive into some more LCD Soundsystem.

Yeah, I have an issue tying intelligence/stupidity to education level. There's more than one way to be smart and more than one way to learn and saying that college is the "right" way is problematic.

Don't drive yourself nuts over protein numbers. More protein is good but it's not like you're looking to cut down to 5% body fat so what does it really matter if you're taking in the "right" amount.

Use of those apps to log what you eat for a week and see what your protein/fat/carb ratio is. Then you can try to cut some carbs and add some more protein as needed. Eat more lettuce and less bread, less chips and more nuts, replace ice cream/sweets with greek yogurt, etc. Make small changes over time so that it works for you. You want something that's sustainable for the rest of your life, not a fad you'll stop doing in a month.

See I was thinking this, but then I realized its so damn expensive. Talking like $60 a month. Then I realized... eating a can of chicken a day is about the same protein but it also costs like $60 a month with just a little more calories.

So, it's basically the same I suppose.

I buy big bags of the stuff from Costco. The one I like is $50 but it goes on sale maybe once a year down to $40 (I think). You can get cheaper stuff for $35-40. Doesn't mix quite as easily but it'll get the job done.

It's 80 servings per bag, so using $50 it's about .62 cents per serving. I only use it after workouts, so a bag lasts 4-5 months. Even if you used it once a day, it's about $20/month. Not too bad I don't think.

What I like about the powder is that it's quick and easy and it takes all of 10 seconds to gulp down. With the chicken, there's usually some prep time, seasoning or cooking or both. Plus, you're going to get sick of chicken, chicken, chicken all day. Eating real food is usually preferable but having protein powder as a supplement/meal replacement is a good deal.

4 Day Split
Bench Press + Pullups/Dips
Squats + Abs/Jump Rope
Overhead Press + Chinups/Dips/Arms
Deadlifts + Abs/Jump Rope

I work up to one set of "as many reps as I can" for the 4 main lifts, then drop down to 55% to get 5 sets of 10 for volume. Finish off with the supplemental work.

Drink lots of water and eat some fruits and/or veggies every day. Remember moderation when it comes to eating unhealthy stuff; I'm not going to cut pizza and beer and chips out of my diet.

Getting more protein in your diet is easy with protein powder. One scoop with some water, stir, and chug after a workout.

Biggest thing with working out is that it IS work. You have to make the time for it and make it routine. Once you stop it's hard to get the ball rolling again.

My first listen I just, well, listen; maybe mark down the songs that stand out, if I'm able. Second listen is when I try to get a ranking in place. Third listen I do in my ranking order, so it's easier to see when something is "out of order".

I would plan on doing a watch of Hamilton as one of my listens, probably the first, as I think it would bring an extra dimension to watch the actual play.

Anyway, back to our featured album, Sound of Silver...

First listen was extremely positive. After U2 and Radiohead and Alice in Chains, this album is a well needed breath of fresh air that's much more in the wheelhouse of my current listening tastes. That first song grabbed me quick and then the rest of the album kind of never lets up (except for that last song which I wasn't too fond of). There are some really great beats here! I'm very much looking forward to doing some re-listens and checking out some more of LCD Soundsystems' discography.

I try to do 3 listens over a week since I think that's a good amount to get a feel for an album and then have a chance to digest it and evolve what I think. I don't always get there, and I don't really need that for an album I'm familiar with (which doesn't happen too often) but that's my target.

But yeah, no big deal if you keep things as is, either I'll find the time or I won't. I'm not gonna need a week to do Bat out of Hell, so hopefully I can find some "bonus" time that week.
