Literally the only good Sonic games are Sonic 1, 2, 3K and Mania. Everything else is trash. A bad game doesn't become good just because it's close in rank to a good game; it just means there's not many good Sonic games.

The games should really just be about Sonic fighting Eggman with no one else involved. I hate all of the other characters lol. If I had to be generous, I could excuse Tails and Knuckles, but they weren't fun to play as in Heroes at all. Brawling as the power characters and flying as the flight characters just killed the game's flow. When you play a Sonic game, you just want high speed action and platforming; devs keep adding in this other shit that no one wants.

Actually, Naka said in an interview for Sonic's 20th anniversary that Sega of America had that removed. Former Sega of America employees also interviewed confirmed it. I wouldn't be surprised if it being a tired cliche was also a factor, though.

It's not even that all of these gimmicks were inherently bad ideas, either. Maybe a Sonic game with guns or swords could have been fun if done right; there's the challenge of blending these seemingly over-the-top elements with the core Sonic gameplay properly, but some developers might have succeeded. Unfortunately, games like Shadow and the Black Knight were fucking trash all around, failing at even the most basic of game design. It's like Sonic Team never evolved past the late 90s, when 3D games ran amok with horrible camera angles, clipping, glitches and terrible controls.

I'm giving Naka too much credit, though. Honestly, there's always been a major disconnection between what the Japanese developers want for Sonic, and what the American audience actually wants. This isn't just true of Sonic, but Sega in general. It was thanks to how Sega of America softened Sonic's character during his conception and marketed him that made both him and the Genesis so successful in America. Meanwhile, back home in Japan, Sonic and Genesis were never successful. There was a lot of jealousy on the Japanese side towards the company's success in America, and that animosity basically destroyed Sega after the Genesis. Naka didn't seem to get along with the Americans and he was one of the ones who vouched for Sonic to have a human girlfriend when the first game was being made.

With the company in shambles, the clueless Japanese devs could now do whatever they wanted; that combined with the company's obsession with meeting deadlines resulted in all these garbage Sonic games being churned out like no tomorrow. Sega of Japan is just a shitty company all around.

3D Sonic games, right from the start, have been criticized for having bad camera, faulty collision detection, glitches, an overabundance of automation, unresponsive controls and totally redundant, gimmicky gameplay mechanics. Sequels should answer the criticism and feedback of the preceding games, but they almost always have the same damn flaws, as if the devs never learn.

Let's talk about the gimmicky gameplay mechanics. You pick up a Sonic game to run fast, perform platforming, collect rings and destroy robots. No one is playing a Sonic game for shooting, treasure hunting, fishing, brawling, hack-n-slashing or going slow in general; these things are rightfully bashed every time they're included in the games. It took until Sonic Colors for the devs to attempt to stop with these dumb gimmicks, but even then, that game was plagued by redundant power-ups that broke up the pacing; only thing they had going was that they were better than the gimmicks in other 3D Sonic games.

Generations did away with the dumb power-ups for the most part and made Classic, Genesis-style its gimmick, including that type of gameplay along with the Modern boost-style that's been the norm since Unleashed. It's the best 3D Sonic game to date, but it's still not very good. Classic Sonic plays like a pale imitation of his Genesis self; the physics are off and the levels are full of bland scripted sequences. Modern Sonic has even more automation in its especially shallow "boost to win" style of gameplay, full of endless corridors, homing attack chains and erratic, unresponsive controls.

I can see why Lost World went back to the drawing board as this kind of gameplay lacks any real substance, but it went about it the wrong way, turning Sonic into more of a generic platformer with nerfed speed, terrible physics, sloppy mechanics that break the flow like the new parkour system, and an increased focus on dumb power-ups and minigames to artificially extend playtime. And Sonic Team should have never trusted the noob devs at Big Red with the Sonic IP, so it's largely their fault that Rise of Lyric came about as well.

With their most recent failure in Sonic Forces, a half-assed rehash of Generations with much worse level design and especially bad, slow paced platforming mechanics in its custom character gameplay, Sonic Team clearly doesn't know what do at all anymore. The fact this game immediately followed the much better Mania, which is really just a glorified fangame, is just laughable. Fan developers have a better idea of what a Sonic game should be like than professional ones; games like Sonic Utopia and GT are far from perfect, but with enough polish and refinement, they might grow into something truly great. But as for the official games? They'll remain trash unless Sonic Team gets better devs, I guess.
