I admittedly always thought it was very odd in RPGs how when your frontline gets wiped out, your reserve party members are seemingly just like "welp, guess we'll die"

Like, did they go on vacation or something? What the hell?

This is something I greatly appreciated about the Golden Sun sequels (not the first game since you didn't have reserve members). If your frontline wipes out, it isn't a game over; the reserve members will immediately jump in to take over. I'm sure this isn't the only example of RPG that does this, but it's the example that sticks out in my memory from what I've played.

It's clearly designed as an introductory level RPG, much like games like Final Fantasy Mystic Quest and Pokemon (especially so modern day Pokemon).

If you're looking to be challenged, you need to either look elsewhere, or toward self-imposed challenge rules or difficulty hacks or something.

I love it when Americans pretend that video games would cease to exist without Nintendo. The NES wasn't that popular in Europe and Latin America, which simply gravitated towards rival consoles like the Master System and home computers like C64 and Amiga.

I love it when Europe and Latin America pretend like their markets mattered at all to game companies back then.

This reminds me of a time when the game/console was still somewhat new and they had a demo kiosk down at our local Sears. Like many such demos probably are, it was programmed to hard reset every few minutes as a cue to let another person in waiting have a turn.

Already having played through the game before, I took a turn at it and managed to rush my way to getting a star before it reset, which allowed me to save the game and not have to restart it from the very beginning (which has a long unskippable intro sequence). The trick was not to go after the King Bob-omb star because that took up way too much time; the Chain Chomp star is much quicker. Doing that broke open the game a little bit because of the time gained from not having to watch the intro, allowing access to other stars that I otherwise wouldn't have had time to reach (unless maybe if I were some pro speedrunner or something, which I'm definitely not).

I had fun dealing with the forced resets as a sort of challenge mode, picking away at the game a star or two at a time and gaining a small audience until eventually the parents were done shopping and wanted to leave, so I had to leave as well.

The weird thing is that prior to gen 6, paralysis did work that way -- paralysis as an added effect on Electric moves was unable to affect Electric mons (for instance, the chance for Thunderbolt to paralyze would be negated if the target was Electric type).

Prior to then, Thunder Wave was the only Electric move that could inflict paralysis on an Electric type, because the paralysis there was not an added effect. If anything, that's what should have been changed -- making Electric types immune to Thunder Wave as well. I also don't know why they became immune to paralysis as a whole.

As a bit of trivia, gen 6 also added several other beneficial effects to certain other types. Grass types became immune to powder/spore effects, Ghost types became immune to any sort of trapping effects (being unable to switch out) as well as being able to run away from any wild Pokemon guaranteed regardless of speed comparison, and Poison types gained perfect accuracy when using the move Toxic (ignoring accuracy/evasion changes and also hitting Pokemon using moves like Fly or Dig)

I have never heard of anyone complaining about CJ being black. And sure, that may not have been a new IP, but I really don't see that having changed even if it was.

I would think most of the time games starring black protags don't do well, it's because... the games sucked. What a shocker.

It would only seem wrong for him to do it to Lisa because she much more rarely does anything to warrant it. She generally doesn't wander into punkass kid territory as much as Bart does (at least not from the era of the show I'm familiar with; I don't know what it's like now)

Why would them inconveniencing you affect your views on whatever cause it is?

Because, I don't know if you noticed, but that's how humans tend to work. People tend not to care about things until it starts affecting their lives directly, and whether or not they're on the side of those things greatly depends on whether those things affect them in either a positive or negative way. This is pretty basic stuff.

Agreed with OP. Not that they managed to stick around for long, apparently.

It's the "adult" equivalent of a kid trying to throw a public tantrum in order to get his way, and it's unfortunately no more dignified at an adult age than it is at a toddler age.

If you're the sort to charge your kid rent, hope you're ready to have that same kid charge you back for daycare once you're too old to shower and wipe your own ass.

And if that's the sort of transactional relationship you want with your kid, well, knock yourself out. Can't see how that'd feel particularly fulfilling, though.
