Hate to break it to you, but video gaming was in a much sorrier state before the NES came out compared to when the PS1 came out.

The Xbox Series X rips apart the PS5 in terms of everything.

Unfortunately the Sega Saturn wouldn't have succeeded in the long run. It was ahead of its time.

Sony did not save gaming. Nintendo did. Learn your video game history, people. Doesn't matter if you individually began gaming on a playstation. History doesn't revolve around you. The only time gaming was at threat of extinction was when the NES came out

The crash was indeed only a massive thing in the US. It wasnt at risk of extinction anywhere else.

JVC & VHS won the Home Video Cassette Tape wars.

But Betacam owned the professional market.

The Playstation had inferior graphics to The Saturn.

True, while "The Saturn" was technically superior in terms of hardware, it was also incredibly complex to program for and the tools were a joke. Asking the devs to program in assembly at that time was stupid and there tools were NO-WHERE close to being friendly.

At the end of the day, Bigger / Better Software Library wins out along with a easier to develop for platform.

I'll give Xbox & GameCube it's props in terms of hardware, they were a bit better than Sony's PS2, but they released after Sony released as well, so they knew what kind of hardware Sony had and what they needed to counter it. So they had the advantage of being late movers.

But having better 3rd Party Developer Support & ease of development allowed a superior Software Library to form:

That's why PS2 dominated Xbox, GameCube & DC combined in terms of hardware sales & software sales to boot.

This was where Sony screwed up from 2x Generations of run-away success.
They made the PS3 too hard to develop for and MS made it easier to develop.
That's why they were on the backfoot at the initial half of the console war.

But in the end, Sony got their act together and barely eeked a win.

Nintendo managed to figure out that casuals liked their gimmicks and decided to go down their own wacky path.

The Xbox One X had superior graphics to the PS4 Pro.

All that extra power means jack when Sony had a 2:1 sales advantage against MS.
117.2 million sold of PS4's of all models compared to
58 million of XB1 family.
Again, MS failed another generation.

Nintendo failed with the WiiU and had to merge their Home Console & Portable Division into one unit.
They're lucky that the Nintendo Switch turned out to be a hit.
125.62 million units sold is great for hardware #'s.

The Xbox Series X rips apart the PS5 in terms of everything.

Raw Computational Power doesn't mean jack for gaming.
PS5 is doing just fine and XSX doesn't bring anything special to the table.

Go look at the hardware specs, it's the dev tools & 3rd party support that matters along with building a large library of software/games that matters.

Making the "Most Powerful Hardware" is nothing but e-Peen comparing.

Hardware is largely useless w/o a extensive software library.

You can worry about having bad-ass hardware after you got a amazing software library.

Ergo, Team x86 on the PC side with it's massive history of software.

You are so right the NES bombed in Europe. I had an NES but binned it when the superior Master System came out.

You are so correct about computer gaming in the UK. Everybody was busy playing on their ZX Spectrum's, BBC Micro's, Commodore Vic 20/64's, Amiga's or Atari 800's to bother with consoles even though the Atari 2600 and I think Colecovision was out in the UK. That cycle of computer gaming wasn't broken in the UK until the graphically superior Mega Drive was released.

You are also so right that Nintendo did diddly squat in Europe. Oh I stand corrected they did do something and that was getting their asses kicked by SEGA!

Europe has been part of the "Big 3x" gaming markets.

NA (North America)
EU (Europe)
JP (Japan)

Those are the original "Big 3x" gaming markets.

Latin America and other regions followed behind the "Big 3x" in importance.

Still dont understand how corporate manufacturers and products who dont give a fuck about their consumers can have fanboys.

If PS1 never was made, I think that

1. Sega would have kept making consoles and competing with Nintendo

2. I dont think xbox would have come about. I think Microsoft got inspired to join the console business by the playstation

Basically, in 2023 we would still just be in an eternal nintendo vs sega war. Nintendo consoles never would gone the wii route. No need for them to do gimmicks if they aren't being threatened by Sony and Microsoft. And Saturn and dreamcast would have been more successful, since they were only battling 1 rival
