The idea behind it was how it used to be a fairly common way for Americans to salute the flag prior to it falling out of favor during world war 2 for obvious reasons. The mother of the student has stated that they didnt even have so much of an issue with the lesson itself, but rather how the administration reacted to the student in a wildly inappropriate manner. The idea being that when someone is made uncomfortable by something the initial reaction should always be one of patience and understanding as opposed to apologize for making our school system look bad. Having had a bit of experience with the township of Mountain Brook, I am not at all surprised their primary concern would be not looking bad. |

It seems as though the majority of the outrage has to do with the response of the administration to the complaint as opposed to about the lesson itself.
