Agreed on most points there, just not sure why everybody agrees steam has great prices for all but new games. Hitman 2 is 10 bucks, the physical version is 5.29 on amazon. Available as low as $1.50 new. A lot of physical PC games become completely dirt cheap. The Telltale games mentioned are better priced elsewhere, as are most adventure games. Steam prices aren't really wowing me lately.

oh by all means, amazon has some great deals too. I'd always recommend you look around before just committing to steam. Overall though, steam is a pretty good platform for seeing lower than the norm prices.

steam essentially is glorified DRM. The main reason why people dont complain about it, and even people like me (who hate almost all things about this gen of gaming) don't completely hate steam is because you do see lower prices on it.

My main beef with the future of gaming is that the consumer is getting less power, but is still paying very similar prices, sometimes even higher. I would never use steam to buy a new release game day 1. Why pay the same price to get a non physical copy and miss out on some extras (such as the paper map in skyrim)?

But aside from day 1 big budget releases, steam is actually a great platform. Yes, we lose some freedom, but we are at least seeing some advantages. Hell, if i didnt buy skyrim day 1 and waited a few months, i might have gotten in on steam when it was cheaper.

gog.com is a better digital distribution platform imo, but im sure a lot of people will disagree with me on that.

not gonna lie, even with a fun movie like avengers, I am getting tired of super hero flicks.

Especially when you combine them with this "were rebooting" thing.

Perhaps this should be taken with a grain of salt though, i just bought the marvel encyclopedia since it was on sale on amazon a few weeks ago.

id say around 2008. The peak years were 02 to about 06. The internet has changed, these types of message boards are going out of style. Facebook and social media in general kinda halted growth of sites like these. Reddit and youtube are other examples.

Not that i hate those sites, but it has changed the former largest internet communities like a gamefaqs, or tribal war, etc. Eventually it will change again too

It's pretty rare, and that's a cheap price, given how it's in the box with the manual.

I'd say take it, if only because it'll become even more valuable in 10 years.

edit: and rarity guide says that the game, complete in the box, typically goes for $80.

thats interesting, i just looked the game up on amazon and i saw a few complete copies for like 60. Maybe the VC release has lowered it a tad

i love a good "late nite" drive. With gas prices going up a bit i don't do it nearly as often, but sometimes i just like being on the road late at night with almost no traffic. It helps me organize my thoughts at times to be honest.

With that said, i hate driving during any "big traffic" parts of the day. I'm somebody who does almost all my "errands" from 8am till noon, or 7pm till 10 ish if i work that day.

the contests have been pretty "meh" as of late. I'd say 02 to about 05 was the golden age, with the silver age from about 06 to 08.

I do feel though the contests have gotten worse mainly due to how the internet has evolved, and not necessarily that they have "just gotten stale" or something

some more obscure morrowind mods i enjoyed:

the prison ship escape
children of the night (was supposed to be 3 parts, not sure if it was ever finished)

The prison ship escape is a fun story about the Juib guy you meet when you create a new character. You have to rescue him. I remember one part being kinda tricky to initiate the next part of the quest, but the readme probably has a walkthru.

Children of the night was kinda cheesy, but it involved a few cool fights. Some of pics i saw for part 2 and 3 added some beautiful (well, for 2002/2003) textures. Im pretty sure part 2 was released but part 3 was not

It's a circlejerk for some part that's for sure. But not for the most part. I facepalm at the circlejerking that goes on but it by no means dominates this board.

actually, it kinda does. I see so many people who post comments, and get much more "i may disagree with what you have to say...." responses if the first poster was a well known and liked person.

Same goes with how projects from some users get tons of posts and comments, while other just as good ones dont.

I mean im sure if anyone responds to this i'll get a much more "**** you" type post because of me not being a well liked poster.

The circlejerk aspect of any established social environment is always prevalent. The internet, despite being more about anonymity, is still the same.

Those are not issues that come with turn-based gameplay. Load times in general can be removed, and random encounters aren't a necessity anymore. You can still streamline and optimize a turn-based battle system for modern times, be inventive with how it plays. There's a hole there that Final Fantasy can easily fill. If people want Skyrim, they'll play Skyrim. If they want Final Fantasy, they want something different.

fair enough, but thats still changing the game design, which is what i am saying that the FF series needs to do....

Square would be better off creating a high production turn-based RPG rather than trying to change the genre into another but not as good. People still love old RPGs, and even the people wanting a FFVII remake aren't clamoring for an action-based battle system, so if they stayed with what they know, created a fun and interesting world with good characters, they would end up with a much more well received game. They don't need to make JRPGs something they aren't, they just need to make them enjoyable again.

there will always be a market for turn based rpgs even in the US, sure. But they are very slow paced, especially with menu load times, random battle load times, etc. The market for them isn't as large as it used to be, back when FF7, FF8, Tactics, etc were all among the highest selling games each year. Sad, but true.

If square would have a good story combined with an effective way to tell it, then yes menu based and turn based gameplay could work. But most gamers these days don't want the downtime that many jrpgs have, especially since the thing jrpgs excel at (stories) are becoming better on other genres.

I really do feel that final fantasy needs to have some more changes and not "go back" if they want to improve

I mean most of us here love the DS dragon quest games because of how basic they are, but those games haven't sold for **** in the USA.

other genres have evolved a lot more than jrpgs. Jrpgs used to be the only genre on consoles that actually told good stories. Thats changed. Wrpgs found a home on consoles, and even the basic action-adventure and sandbox games have found ways to add story without sacrificing downtime of gameplay.

Basically, in order for square to make a comeback in the usa, they need to change up the genre. Stuff like that doesn't fly in japan though.

nintendo lost this gen in the "court of public opinion"?

they lost in the court of hardcore video game nerd opinion, but the court of public opinion at large?

Nintendo lost this gen in how they handled the future of their fanbase. Yes, the wii won this gen (although its victory was a much smaller margin than all the other generation winners expect maybe the SNES over the Genesis), but they created a massive divide and exodus amongst their supporters back in the NES/SNES/N64 days

Nintendo has a large market, but its becoming a fickle as hell group. Its fanbase is nintendo die hards (which seem like to me are becoming smaller and smaller, nintendo not winning this poll like it would of 10 years ago is an example of this), and casual gamers who were excited about the wii's novelty.

I really don't see the wiiu causing even half the excitement the wii had, and apple is eventually going to take over the casual fanbase due to the convenience of gaming on the iphone

I actually think that nintendo is doing horrible in this poll, considering that its gamefaqs. I mean 10 years ago nintendo would be winning with something like 65% of the vote.

It is interesting to see that even gfaqs is becoming less faithful towards nintendo. I'll be honest i feel that nintendo has been extremely bad since about 2003. A few gems here and there, but nothing like the mid 90s.

Apple by far has the best chance to dominate the industry in the coming years. Gaming for the most part is separated in 2 eras: before the crash of the early 80s, and after. I think were about to see the beginning of a 3rd major era that focuses mostly on services and portability leading the charge, not consoles.

I've got to say, though, I'm not really a fan of Fedor. I think most of that stems from his personality, which is an odd thing to say because he is certainly very respectful of all of his opponents. The only problem with that was that he was pretty much just emotionless, which made for a boring guy. Thankfully, he wasn't a boring fighter.

ill take a boring personality but amazing and fun to watch fighter over the opposite any day. To be honest i dont really care for the "you need to be amazing at your sport and some amazing personality too" that so many people seem to want in sports.

I guess i don't care much about the off the field drama as the average sports fan.

The fact that Jones is even in contention for his weight class, though, illustrates just how young the sport is. Even at his young age, his record is basically 17-0, and that already gives him one more career win than Tito and just four fewer than Chuck. If he beats Henderson, that'll make four consecutive title defenses, which is just one behind Tito's for most all time in the LHW division. Jones's 2011 may have been the best year any MMA fighter ever had, and honestly, that alone is enough to put him in contention.

I'll be rooting for Hendo to knock his block off, though.

true. I'll be honest, i thought the UFC was in a pretty stale period from like fall 09 to about summer 2011. The big names of previous generations were getting old and besides jones the young talent was too raw and weren't really establishing any sort of "future dominance" in any weight class. The past 6 months to a year though the big names of the mid 00s left the sport and I'm pretty impressed with some young talent too. Jones being the headline, but Pettis, Aldo, MacDonald, McDonald are all still very young and appear to be poised to have insanely long "primes"

by far the greatest heavyweight MMA fighter of all time to this point. i'm not sure if any lighter fighters have surpassed him at this point though. silva, jones, and GSP are already way up there.

anderson might have surpassed him. Jones is still a bit too young, but he has a ton of notable wins for his age and probably will surpass him when its all said and done.

GSP is starting to lose points with me (and i believe many people now) in the pound for pound rankings. The only finish he has in his 6 title defenses is a corner stoppage to bj penn. To be fair it was a pretty legit stoppage, but i promise you penn wanted to keep going as well. But ya, i cant put GSP on the same tier as fedor, anderson, or even jones at this point due to his lack of finishes

I'm not saying every win has to be a KO, TKO, or sub, but you need a lot more than what GSP has gotten since becoming a big name fighter (starting maybe around early 2006)

My one issue with Fedor was him never competing against the best during his prime. I have no doubt he would have been amazing in UFC, but I would have liked seeing it.

yes he did. his prime was from like 02 to 07, and he was absolutely facing the best mma competition during that time period. The UFC heavyweight division was an absolute joke during the same years as fedor's prime. Its pretty damn stacked now (has been for about 4 or so years). It was also a pretty good division back in the late 90s and till like 03, then tim sylvia won it and it went to **** for a division.

Most overrated fighter in MMA's young history finally hanging them up.

that would be one of the following:

Randy Couture, Frank Mir, or Chael Sonen. I'd include chuck liddell but he doesn't deserve to be put in a list with those 3.
