Psh I find hints for plenty of characters I hate. I dislike most of the leading females in RPGs but you can usually see something there! I buy it being tougher to notice em for Squall because he's pretty anti-social but I'm just saying that being able to be a jerk to her for dialogue choices all the way until she leaves the party that last time is just a bad design decision because it does help to obfuscate hints very effectively to the point where they're overshadowed entirely, even assuming they're there at all.

Also I'm pretty sure Squall says he's sorry to Zell at some point too.

I'm just saying I wouldn't put it past a huge FF8 fanboy to see the story flow in a light that makes more sense than it would for a normal person. Some of the hints you think are there might be there, but I would bet good money more than a few would have people saying "yeah I don't really see it" if you explained it.

Also you come off as the type that doesn't pick the "dick answers" so you're not really arguing from our side of the fence anyway. It's not even entirely a matter for those people if hints exist, but if the hints outweigh the weight of Squall being a dick to Rinoa more than the other party members. And the answer is pretty clearly "no" there imhhho.

Yes I know what you meant I was making fun of you.

Seriously though you can find hints to any theory in a game. Whether they were there or just you projecting your ideas of what the plot should be onto them is another issue. Very possible that those "hints" weren't intended as "hints" at all but rather just someone shoehorning a logical progression into a story that isn't really written well.

Not to say that's obviously the case but if enough people can't see something it's very possible. Keep in mind that I'm sure people who write slash fanfiction can find evidence for Squall x Selphie in the game too.

She is a special kind of annoying it'd be hard for him not to.

Kinda like how Cloud might view Yuffie differently than he views anyone else after she steals the party's materia.

I don't recall any real strong vibe that he cares from any of them. Maybe something like "this isn't quite as bad as I thought it'd be" but nothing that really has a good transition into disc 3.

But there are multiple scenes where Squall shows care and concern toward Rinoa without you getting any choice in the matter.

I disagree with this. All said scenes come off as Squall doing it "because he has to cause it's the right thing to do" or "because his arm was twisted off" or whatever.

First time I actually watched a video for it. I dunno about that game. Looks like the combat would get shallow if you never got more party members. If you do in fact get more party members (as in, the ability to fight with more than one character at once) it could be fine.

Looks pretty though.

Bayonetta's signature moves are actually somewhat spells though: summoning her hair to create dragons and freezing her enemy in time when she dodges (which are arguably her more well-known talents) don't involve her weapons in any form.

Yeah and all of Sephiroth's more prolific attacks don't involve weapons either. Supernova is totally a spell, and KH Sephiroth especially all of his really cool looking moves involving calling down flaming pillars and meteor swarms and stuff. It's pretty much the same thing.

All of Sephiroth's "famous moves" are magical too and he's probably more proficient with magic than over half the field just by virtue of being an overpowered bastard.

But yeah there are a lot of characters that don't fit into any of the categories-- that alone isn't really good enough.

Nah. Bayonetta is definitely closer to Sephiroth (magical techniiques thrown into physical beatdowns) than a mage or wizard. You're completely right there. Yes I've played Bayonetta-- hell, I like Bayonetta and would vote her over most of the mages in the contest, but she's... not, really. *shrug

Also Seymour has some white magic yeah but he uses Black Magic a lot more.

I'm not even sure how being given the option to be mean to Rinoa undermines and contradicts the story anyway because it's very clearly stated that they didn't get along to begin with no matter what you choose, but things changed over time. And you get several scenes before the Disc 3 change where Squall and Rinoa interact amiably anyway.

If you pick the "nice" options Squall doesn't like her but slowly gets nicer to her.

If you pick the "mean" options Squall doesn't really change at all until disc 3.

That's the problem.

Summer 2004 was better just because we had less data. Things like Mega Man being able to beat Link weren't totally out of the question. That and a decent amount of the round 1 matches were up in the air-- lots of close ones. We didn't have a match closer than 55-45 until well into round 2 this year.

If the game was about Squall learning to fall in love you'd think Quistis or Selphie would've been alternatives-- a good love story in a video game would give you some choice there-- if it was really the point of the story. Like Squall and Rinoa don't really have any chemistry I recall it's just Rinoa constantly being pushy and Squall eventually giving in, presumably because she's good looking. Quistis and Selphie could've played this part too, really.

But I mean, I don't mind being stuck with Rinoa but don't give an option to be a total dick to her right up until Squall randomly snaps. That's just dumb writing.

Gilgamesh is weird in that he fights perfectly if you assume he utterly outclasses his opponent like he does here. No nonsense just nonchalantly tosses a bucket of rocket weapons at you and you die like the mongrel you are.

But yeah if he's actually got a decent match against him his cockiness can bite him. He's probably still better than Fate/Stay Archer though.

He's kinda right though. This contest has had zero upsets come match time. Trainers > Fighters was technically an upset at bracket time but it became more and more obvious that that was going to happen. Alucard > Magus was technically an upset at bracket time as well (barely, though) but yeah, pretty obvious now. Basically this contest punished you for taking risks.

I'm pretty sure any random weapon Gilgamesh would fire could OHKO half of Red's Pokemon given the things wreck buildings at minimum. Snorlax and Aerodactyl might take a few. But given Gilgamesh's typical strategy is to fire like 40 of them in a deluge I don't see Red standing against the first volley. This match literally takes like 10 seconds.

0.

Worst FF character. In the running for all time worst character in anything. I'd give her a slight bonus because she's good looking but it cannot begin to quell my hatred. But yeah, just so pushy, so annoying, and does her best to ruin FFVIII and Squall outright.

I think I'd hate her a bit less if Squall didn't have any dialogue options when talking to her, but she kinda ruins the plot of FFVIII if you're like me and find her annoying and thusly pick all of the negative dialogue options for her, so Squall's thought process basically goes "you're annoying"->"stop bugging me"->"ugh"->"I LOVE YOU~" Like I don't mind the game forcing an annoying love interest on you but don't make it seem like I can blow her off and then have it mean nothing. FFVIII is the worst FF when it comes to "the illusion of choice" problem, and 9 times out of 10 it's Rinoa's fault.

Gilgamesh

Volley of noble phantasms fired out of the gate of babylon can probably kill Red and all of his Pokemon at once due to the massive amount of space they're going to take up and the destructive power they have. And I'm not sure any of Red's Pokemon actually have the output to really hurt him anyway since they don't really have magic weapons. And I don't see Gilgamesh taking much time to get annoyed here and send a hailstorm of legendary weapons down because he probably considers fighting animals to be below him.

Especially since apparently the typical Red strategy isn't to bum rush with all his Pokemon. Don't see him being able to block the first "get out of my sight" volley that he usually does even if he hides behind Pokemon.

Eh I don't think there's necessarily a problem with this. He just doesn't think it should be taught in schools, which isn't necessarily the outright wrong stance to have, even if I don't necessarily agree with it or even feel that it's relevant to the current state of the public school system. I kinda think in a day and age where gay marriage and such are such hot topics that this will start to happen in schools, if it hasn't already, and public schools do tend to lean "left" in general. I wouldn't be surprised if it already has started considering it's been a while since I've been in school.

So I uh, actually kinda agree with Ulti on this one. Rare event!
