See, now this is an opinion I will never understand. Personally, I think: 3 > AAI > 1 > 2 > AJ

Speaking of opinions I will never understand.

AAI doesn't fix the shortcoming of exciting stuff happening though because it's not the same without a courtroom setting and a rival. I mean, it's still a good game, but I wouldn't rank it over any PW game.

This leads me into another thing I hear people say against Auron: “He shouldn’t have kept everything secret from the party,” otherwise commonly known as “Tifa Syndrome,” the condition of keeping critical information from other party members. One of these days, I hope someone makes an RPG where every party member who joins will tell you everything they know as soon as they join! Everyone will hate it! Regardless, in Auron’s case, I actually agree with his decision not to divulge everything to them. I don’t know how effective it would’ve been to lay everything on the table from the get-go and say, “Here’s what you’re up against, and here’s what’s false about everything you’ve ever believed about Yevon.” I think you’d be running the risk of breaking their will to continue the pilgrimage. It’s just too much to process at that point in time. It’d be overwhelming. Like I said, I think Auron’s sense of timing is solid. He told people what they needed to know when they needed to know it. He was a bit more open with Tidus, but I think that’s because he wasn’t from Spira and he had no attachment to the religious traditions of Yevon, so it would be easier for him to take.

Plus, I think one of the reasons Auron didn’t spill the beans right off the bat was because he wanted to be a guide rather than a director. He helped them along when necessary, but for the most part, he wanted them to figure out everything for themselves and make their own decisions about it as much as possible. He didn’t want to influence or prejudice their thinking too strongly one way or another. I think of what Auron said to Rikku when she was trying to pressure him into telling them something he knew. “Look not to others for knowledge. This is your journey, too.” Auron understood that the pilgrimage was a journey of discovery and decisions, and everyone deals with it in different ways. He wanted them to have their own unique journey instead of making them think what he may have wanted them to think. Even if they did not reach the conclusion he would have liked, I don’t think Auron would have necessarily stopped them because it’s their journey as much as it is his. He considered the learning experience to be a crucial part of the pilgrimage.

I think the reason Auron feels he can be more open when they reach Zanarkand is because they’ve reached the destination in spite of the adversity, and he can see what decisions they’ve made and what kind of people they’ve become. When Yuna discovers Zaon’s fayth statue is empty, one of them asks Auron if he knew this was going to happen, and he replies, “If I had told you the truth, would that really have stopped you from coming?”

Anyway, this writeup has gone on way too long, so let’s wrap this up by talking about Auron in battle. It’s always satisfying to deal lots of damage and kill big enemies, and he excels in this department. I love tearing things down with his Break abilities, and I think one of the most gratifying feelings in the game is using Shooting Star on a really big enemy and launching them out of the stratosphere with one shot. Plus, Auron quotes The Princess Bride’s most famous line! How cool is that? Also, he has one of the best character designs in the series.

Finally, I really like the scene in the ending when Yuna sends him (although I wish there had been some sort of final dialogue between Tidus and Auron instead of the two of them exchanging glances for a few seconds). That final line, “This…is your world now,” is fantastic. Spira is no longer the spiral of death. It belongs to the living now. Just a great final line, very impactful.

Bonus Question: Who is your favorite Final Fantasy X character?

Whew, consider that writeup a holiday special!

But because Auron became an unsent, unable to leave Spira because of his yet unfulfilled promise to Jecht, he was able to “ride” Sin to Dream Zanarkand, where he watched over Tidus. It was only because he went back in a rage and got himself killed by Yunalesca that all this was even possible, so it turned out to be a strange twist of fate that worked out for the best. Part of me wonders what sort of relationship Tidus and Auron had during those ten years. We’re only shown brief glimpses that show that they knew each other and interacted, but how involved was Auron in his upbringing? I know there’s no concrete answer, but it makes me curious.

Speaking of Tidus and Auron’s relationship, I’d say it’d be nearly impossible to do a writeup on this guy without talking about it. It’s the most important and developed one in the game aside from the relationship between Tidus and Yuna. I thought it was interesting how Auron was more of a passive guide throughout the game. He’s never really bossy or demanding, and the only thing he really ever forces him to do is go to Spira, but that was because that’s what Jecht wanted. Auron never really told Tidus why he was doing all he was doing until the end of the game. He was just there to give him a helping hand along the way. I think Auron really cared about Tidus and wanted him to succeed for Jecht’s sake, but he wasn’t heavy-handed about it, which was cool.

Overall, I think Auron is really wise. He knows what to say and do, and he knows when to say and do it. I think a prime example of this is when he meets up with Tidus again in Luca. I love how Tidus is just ranting and raving at him, blaming him for everything that’s happened to him so far, and Auron…just laughs. I don’t know if I really understand why he did that, but I know if it were me, I’d want to tell him a thing or two and set the record straight. I suppose I’m trying to say I found it impressive that Auron was willing to take all of Tidus’s anger in stride and was willing to be misunderstood at the time.

But then Auron goes on to break the news to Tidus about how Sin is Jecht. I was pretty impressed with his discretion in the matter, deciding it was better for him to learn the truth from someone he could trust when nothing major was happening as opposed to finding out from a villain at a crucial moment (like, say, from Seymour at Mount Gagazet when he reveals it to the rest of the party). Auron wanted to prevent him from getting too emotional and letting things get out of hand. Timing is everything, as they say. Then, as reality starts to set in and Tidus is starting to get discouraged over what he’s just been told, he simply places a hand on his shoulder and says, “It’s all right.” I think this is a pretty understated moment for Auron because it’s a rare open display of compassion, which was really nice to see.

20. Auron (Final Fantasy X)
Quote: “Legendary guardian? I was just a boy. A boy about your age, actually. I wanted to change the world, too. But I changed nothing. That is my story.”
external image

Man, I just love that pic. Amazing stuff all around. Might be my favorite piece of artwork from Final Fantasy X. I also love the quote I posted for Auron. That’s actually my favorite quote of his (along with, “This…is your world now” during the ending), moreso than his quote before the Yunalesca battle, which is still awesome, of course, but I feel like this one is a bit underappreciated. This quote was one of the first and few open and honest moments he shares about himself with the party, especially with a party member other than Tidus (Wakka, in this case). In fact, Auron is really awesome throughout all of Zanarkand because, for the most part, that’s when he removes the veil and lets the secrets out into the open. Of course, Zanarkand basically brings out the best in nearly everyone involved, but that’s beside the point.

People criticize Auron for being too cliché. Is he cliché to an extent? Yeah, probably. Do I care? No, because Square pulled it off exceedingly well. A cliché exists for a reason, and that’s because it works. Yeah, after a while, they can lose their effectiveness due to overexposure, but not in this case because Auron is basically the best his archetype has to offer in the realm of video gaming that I’ve come across in my years of gaming. In my opinion, at this point, he’s the measuring rod and the standard for the “Silent, mysterious character with awesome quotes and awesome actions who guides the party on their journey” type. I think the reason for that is, unlike many characters who fit this archetype in video games, there’s more to Auron than you see on the surface. He’s more than just the guy who’s there to be the quote machine and do all the cool stuff in FMVs. He’s got a great backstory and motivation to his character. Although Auron is cold on the outside, he’s a man with a strong sense of loyalty and dedication to what he believes in.

As I mentioned before, I really like Auron’s backstory. It’s pretty interesting watching the Jecht Spheres and seeing how similar his attitude was to Tidus’s on the pilgrimage. He was a man who was unwaveringly loyal to Braska because he was the only guy willing to give him a chance. Plus, as with Yuna, his determination and resolve naturally drew Auron and Jecht to follow him to the death. Although he didn’t get along with Jecht at first, they both changed over time and gradually came to respect one another. As a result, Auron became a man bound by promises made both to Braska and to Jecht, and being a man with such a strong sense of honor and loyalty, he did whatever he had to do to keep those promises, which is one of the things I love most about him.

The story of how Auron worked to fulfill those promises after Braska died and Jecht became Sin is really awesome as well. It’s strange how everything managed to come together without him intending to do so, but it couldn’t have happened any other way. After getting struck down by Yunalesca, Auron literally drags himself all the way down to the base of Mount Gagazet (with a little help from Rin along the way) and manages to communicate Braska’s final wish to take Yuna to Besaid to a recently disgraced Kimahri Ronso before dying, which is pretty hardcore. I also love the irony of how Yuna assumes “the last request of a dying man” referred to her father when Kimahri was really talking about Auron. You are also now realizing that Kimahri knew he was unsent the whole time. As an aside, I really like the fist bump to the chest Auron gives him during the ending before he fades away, almost as if to say, “Thanks for taking care of that for me.”

tragic i think is the bittersweet option, hence the 'nobody wins.' the good guy loses a lot to get his win, the bad guy 'was right' or something like that. for games i don't think you can get a better example of this than Nier's true end. that thing sounds like it takes bittersweet to its most extreme level.

Nier spoilers

Nier's ending is too depressing to be bittersweet, honestly.

But yeah, not being able to do something you really enjoy because of this stipulation kinda sucks. So I don't think I could accept it.
