That question is too hard to handle, honestly. It depends on the game in question. Depending on the game the kind of ending I want changes. Take... say, Tales of Symphonia and NieR, they're vastly different kinds of stories and I wouldn't want the same kind of ending for the two of them.

The only exception is basically ambiguous, that... pretty much never goes well, IMO. To Be Continued is similar, if only because half the time I feel like it won't be continued.

Disgaea makes you Earn Your Bad Endings.

For good reason too.

Disgaea 2's Worst Ending is still one of the more disturbing endings I've experienced. Didn't really see that coming!

Yeah I agree with this. I like endings that have a mix of emotion. Like, a good ending would be one that has a triumph, but one that comes with some sort of cost.

Well it depends what you mean by bittersweet, I suppose. I don't mind good endings with "cost," that's fine. I do mind endings where the narration is trying to imply "this is a good outcome" while the result gives you nothing of the such and it'd be a bad ending if not for the cheerful music playing in the background or upbeat narration accompanying it.

I just find it's a very hard ending type to write while making it feel natural, and most things that try fail miserably. In concept it's not that bad but video games in particular I'd be especially skeptical of them having the talent to pull it off in a satisfying way.

Very well.

Adell, the protagonist, is possessed by Overlord Zenon''s (the bad guy) soul. He promptly turned on his party and killed them all, which includes his brother and sister. As a sound disturbingly similar to someone chewing ravenously on meat is heard, Adell says "I am a being of Solitude"

Though really, just youtube it.

Didn't the Protag got killed at the very last scene, and the killer walked off scot free?

tragic i think is the bittersweet option, hence the 'nobody wins.' the good guy loses a lot to get his win, the bad guy 'was right' or something like that. for games i don't think you can get a better example of this than Nier's true end. that thing sounds like it takes bittersweet to its most extreme level.

Bittersweet is usually a win at a high cost.

You may have defeated the big bad, but you lost your love interest/best friend/parent/etc. It's not a nobody wins option, cause the hero still accomplishes his goal and it doesn't mean the bad guy "was right."

Look at Gears of War 3's ending:
They finally manage to destroy the Lambent, which in turn puts heavy damage to the Locust, but at the cost of losing Fenix's dad and best friend, Dom. Doesn't mean the bad guy was right, just that the cost of victory was high.

Bad guys winning after all your efforts just makes it seem like the game was a waste of time plotwise.

Still not as bad as "Bittersweet, but actually just awful" endings and "Get ready to buy the sequel to this game!" plot hook endings.

Nier's ending is too depressing to be bittersweet, honestly.

There's a big difference between tragic and bittersweet.

Bittersweet: the good guys won, evil is vanquished, but the heroes had to pay a steep price to overcome evil (maybe the land is saved, but the main's love interest/true friend is gone forever). It's important to note that the heroes' main goal has to be achieved - if the love interest is absolutely central to his quest and happiness, and that love interest dies, the ending can no longer be called bittersweet.

Tragic: nobody wins. Evil is vanquished and the good guys triumph, but in the process have negated everything that they once fought for, leaving their entire quest pointless and void of meaning. Or maybe they realize that the "villain" was actually a good guy all along, and as they kill them, they realize that they really should've let them accomplish their plans. Their quest actually left the world worst-off than it had started.

These are just examples, of course, but there's a fine line between bittersweet and tragic, IMO.

Yeah. My problem is that a lot of endings that are presented as bittersweet are actually tragic, by your definition. Mostly cause it's usually a "the main and/or everyone they love are completely screwed but hey the world didn't die. LOOK HOW HAPPY IT IS." type of scenario.

That's why I dislike the ending type. I don't like it when a story tells me how to feel when it's completely at odds with how I feel about it.
