TopicUber: NYC passengers are the rudest in the US

https://nypost.com/2022/02/16/nyc-has-the-rudest-uber-passengers-in-the-us-survey-shows/

A new survey from the ride-sharing giant has found that surprise, surprise Uber passengers in the Big Apple are the worst in the US when it comes to manners, while riders in the Midwest and Sun Belt are significantly nicer. The regional ranking is based on average rider ratings doled out by Uber drivers one to five stars based on whether passengers show up on time, leave trash in vehicles or talk to their drivers respectfully, among other factors. New York is trailed by the fellow rude cities of Seattle, Washington, D.C. and Boston, according to Uber. Minneapolis-St. Paul takes the No. 5 spot, followed by San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Baltimore and Chicago.

News of New York Citys dubious distinction comes after several outright attacks on Big Apple drivers in recent years. In February 2020, a trio of passengers in Queens allegedly left an Uber driver in a coma when they sucker-punched him for asking them to stop drinking alcohol in his car. The following year, another Queens driver was allegedly left in critical condition after a group of strangers bashed him in the head with a bottle. And in 2018, a Bronx passenger accidentally ordered an Uber Pool shared ride then got angry when the driver had to pick up another passenger and assaulted him with a brick, the driver told The Post. While the cities with the rudest riders are mostly concentrated on the coasts, passengers in more inland cities are apparently much nicer. Uber said that San Antonio has the highest average rider rating, followed by St. Louis, Nashville, Salt Lake City and Kansas City, Missouri. The list of nicest cities is rounded out by Sacramento, Tampa Bay, Charlotte, Las Vegas and Portland. Uber released the data on rider rankings as part of the launch of a new feature called privacy center. The lets Uber passengers view how drivers have rated them and gives them tips on how to improve their average rating. We hope that by giving users a peek into how their rating is calculated, we can help encourage positive experiences between riders and drivers on every trip, Uber privacy product manager Zach Singleton said.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/15/mayor-eric-adams-claims-white-journalists-misrepresent-him/

Mayor Eric Adams unloaded Tuesday in an epic rant in which he threatened to stop fielding off-topic questions at his press conferences and blasted the Big Apples news organizations over what he said was their lack of racial diversity. The scolding, which came before an unrelated press conference on summer youth employment efforts, appeared to be sparked by coverage of his failed bid to get state lawmakers to budge on his anti-crime agenda although the mayor failed to convey how race factored into that. One day after meeting with Albany lawmakers in what he all but admitted was a failed attempt to roll back recent criminal-justice reforms, Adams claimed that accounts of his trip, none of which touched on race, were unfairly negative. If you want to acknowledge or not, I have been doing a darn good job and we just cant live in this alternate reality, a clearly angered Adams said. Adams also warned that if the coverage of him doesnt improve, Im just going to come in and do my announcements and bounce.

Adams repeatedly suggested that race played a factor in news coverage of him, telling an almost all-white group of reporters who were hand-picked by his office and invited to cover the City Hall news conference, Im a black man thats the mayor but my story is being interpreted by people that dont look like me. How many blacks are on editorial boards? How many blacks determine how these stories are being written? he said. How many Asians? How many East Asians? How many South Asians? Everyone talks about my government being diversified, whats the diversification in the newsrooms? Adams also accused the reporters of writing through your prisms before adding: Diversify your newsrooms so I can look out and see people who look like me. Recounting his trip to Albany, Adams said, I went to the Assembly conference. People raised the issues that they had and we talked. Black mayor, black Speaker, black majority leader, coming together and talking to each other. A veteran of the previous administration told The Post that Adams appeared to be taking a page out of Bill de Blasios playbook. It didnt work for him, the source said of the notoriously thin-skinned de Blasio, who frequently responded to negative coverage by attacking the citys press corps. Well see how well it works for Eric. Veteran Democratic political consultant Hank Sheinkopf also said that playing the race card wasnt a wise move. Eric Adams mayoralty will rest entirely on crime control. Hes not getting the help he needs in Albany, hes frustrated, hes angry and hes taking it out on the press, Sheinkopf said. And talk of race will not help him.

And the Oscar host duties go to ... Wanda Sykes, Amy Schumer and Regina Hall. On Tuesday the trio were officially named hosts of the upcoming 94th Academy Awards during the "Good Morning America" telecast. "Good morning America I'm not sure who thought this was a good idea, but I am hosting the Oscars along with my good friends Wanda Sykes and Regina Hall," Schumer said in a video shown on "GMA." "I better go watch some movies." This is the first time in Oscars' history that three women have hosted the show -- though it's not the first time more than one person has been enlisted for the job. The most recent instance was in 2011, when actors James Franco and Anne Hathaway hosted, to harsh reviews. The Oscars has not had three hosts since Chevy Chase, Goldie Hawn and Paul Hogan teamed up for the 59th Academy Awards in 1987. The past three ceremonies have been hostless, a trend that began in 2019 when Kevin Hart opted to step away from the gig amid controversy. The Oscars will be held on March 27.

TopicNathan Chen blasted as traitor on Chinese social media after 2022 Olympics gold
Lebronwon

#1
https://nypost.com/2022/02/13/nathan-chen-told-to-get-out-of-china-on-weibo-after-olympics-win/

After leading Team USA to a silver medal in the team figure skating competition and winning his first Olympic gold in the mens individual event, Nathan Chen has been slammed on Weibo the Chinese equivalent of Twitter. The 22-year-old Chinese-American was labeled a traitor on the social media platform for choosing to represent the United States, and was even told to get out of China. After his victory Thursday, some on Weibo complained that Chen was too white and Americanized, citing a long list of examples where they thought Chen was insulting China with his actions. Chen has previously refused to speak Chinese interviews, claiming that his Mandarin isnt very good. The Yale student put his support behind American ice dancer Evan Bates condemnation of Chinas human rights abuses in an October interview. At the time, Bates came down hard on Chinas awful treatment of the Uyghur people. The US did not send any diplomats to the Winter Olympics in Beijing because of the egregious human rights abuses and atrocities.

Pushback against Chen began during his first Olympics in 2018 when he performed one of his routines to a song from the movie Maos Last Dance, which is a retelling of a Chinese dancers defection to the United States during the 1980s. Chen claims he had no knowledge of the film before performing to the song. Maybe naively, I didnt understand the whole system, the whole story behind it, just that the music was very beautiful, he said Friday, adding that the song was chosen by his choreographer. Chen has not responded to any of the vitriol toward him and has only said that he is proud of being Chinese-American. He said it hasnt been difficult to avoid the online barrage because he doesnt have access to the platforms in China. I dont have social media here. So I probably have been very sheltered from that. And I dont plan on looking at social since sometimes social (media) can be a little toxic, he said. Chen has been compared to fellow US-born athletes Eileen Gu and Zhu Yi, both of whom are competing for China at the Winter Games. Gu, a freestyle skier, won gold in womens big air, and was lauded as a Chinese national hero. The 18-year-old, who plans to attend Stanford next year, has been labeled Miss Perfect on Weibo for her skiing skills, modeling career and perfect Mandarin. In the past week, Gu has defended Chinas internet censorship, which was promptly criticized on Twitter and Instagram by those who thought her response was out-of-touch with the actual experiences of those living in China. In the team figure skating event, Zhu faltered and fell twice, dropping China from third to fifth place. The hashtag Zhu Yi has fallen trended on Weibo after her stumble. Users told the 19-year-old to go back to America, and said that she brought shame to China. Zhu, whose family relocated from California to Beijing, has been widely criticized for her lack of fluency in Mandarin and for being what is deemed too American.

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/love-sex/door-knocking-saleswoman-quits-become-26193327

A porn star has opened up about how she transitioned into adult work after working in sales for a TV distribution company. Emily Willis is currently one of the most popular names in the adult industry, and is in the top 0.01% of creators on OF. She has also worked with professional porn production companies, and even ranked fourth place for American audiences in their most popular picks on adult site PH for 2021. Now, speaking to comedians Trevor Wallace and Michael Blaustein on the Stiff Socks podcast, Emily revealed how she had first been enticed into adult work. I was on Tinder, living in San Diego at the time, because I was doing sales, she remembered.Asked what she was selling, Emily explained that she had been going door-to-door, offering people satellite TV services. And, she admitted that her looks had helped in the role, twirling her hair provocatively and noting: I was wearing my little shorts and shit. The model was also dating at the time and it was after she met a good-looking man on a dating app that she first appeared on camera while having sex. So I was just doing my thing on Tinder, and I met this guy and he had his own amateur studio website, she recalled. And he was hot, and I had kind of already had a desire, not something that Id been pursuing but a desire of thinking it would be super hot to be on camera.

He was like, do you want to shoot a porno, and I was like, yeah. They paid me really well. As it turned out, this initial dating match hook-up had proved to be a hugely successful financial decision. Emily was pressed by the podcasts hosts to reveal how much she earns a month by sharing videos and snaps on OF, but the model refused to share the exact number. Is it over $100,000 (roughly 75,000)? Michael asked. Yeah, Emily confirmed. But, Michael wanted to know more, asking for a ballpark figure and questioning whether the monthly figure might even exceed $200,000 (about 150,000). Emily refused to be drawn, but confessed: It is somewhere in that region, yes.

Blizzard-like weather and poor visibility made for dangerous conditions during the men's giant slalom on Sunday. There were 33 crashes at Yanqing National Alpine Skiing Centre, making up approximately one-third of the competitor field. Despite the second run being postponed by 75 minutes due to the inclement weather, the snowstorm continued to play a treacherous role in competition. American River Radamus, who celebrated his 24th birthday on Saturday, narrowly missed a spot to podium, finishing in fourth place (2:10.95).

Old pals Leonardo DiCaprio and Tobey Maguire were spotted partying together in the VIP section of nightclub MainRo in Hollywood on Thursday night. Tobey and Leo came to the club together for a boys night out, a source tells Page Six. It was very clear that Tobey was on the prowl and Leo was his wingman. Leo introduced Tobey to three different blondes. But it seems that even starring in the latest Spider-Man installment doesnt attract the ladies. Even with Leos help, Tobey couldnt land a girl, the source continued. None of them seem interested when introduced. The duo arrived at 10.30 p.m. but called defeat less than two hours later, leaving, because it was clear they were having no luck.

DiCaprio, 47, and Maguire, 46, have been friends for decades and were part of a notorious group of thespian pals that dubbed themselves the pussy posse. Other members included Lukas Haas, Kevin Connolly and David Blaine. The duo has worked together appearing in 1993s This Boys Life and twenty years later in an updated version of The Great Gatsby. There was also Dons Plum a never-released 1996 film that starred the gang and included a monologue by Maguire about anal masturbation.

https://decider.com/2022/02/10/pat-sajak-denies-wheel-of-fortune-fixed/

After fans began to doubt the legitimacy of Wheel of Fortune, host Pat Sajak had to step in and clear the air for all viewers. No, Sajak asserts, Wheel of Fortune is and never has been fixed! The doubts began to roll in as three contestants won the massive cash prize of $100,000 in a row, triggering audiences to start calling foul play on Twitter. But thats not the case, according to the revered game show host. The show made history on Tuesday (Feb. 8), when champs Mark Baer took home the coveted bonus round prize just a day after Lisa Kramer took home the same prize on Monday (Feb. 7). Thats the first time in Wheel of Fortune history that back-to-back winners have snagged $100,000. And the cherry on top is Bree Yokouchi, who made the $100,000 win a three-peat last night (Feb. 9). Before the episode aired, though, Sajak took to social media to deny all conspiracy theories. In all likelihood, Sajak was nervous about the potential backlash towards Yokouchis win, since the game show is pre-recorded. A quick reminder to conspiracy theorists: thanks to the quiz show scandals of the 1950s, fixing a TV game show is a federal crime, Sajak clarified. I really like our players, and Id like them all to win, but I draw the line at serving prison time.

Former Wheel of Fortune champ Robert Santoli wasnt so convinced this would stop conspiracy theorists from chiming in. Making a suggestion to the host, Santoli said Sajak should open all the envelopes just to ensure everythings in its right place. I know its time consuming, but one day you and Vanna should open up all the envelopes just to prove theres just one $100K/Million, he replied. I also sometimes see your card that marks the $100K spot in red, so you know where it is before they even spin! But Sajak was quick to toss the naysayers aside: Anyone silly enough to believe in things like that cannot be convinced of anything, he wrote. It would be a total waste of time. Then, possibly referencing Decembers Audi controversy, Sajak complained about fans constant calls of robbing versus allowing players to win. I love how one day were robbing players of their winnings and then were allowing them to win, he concluded. Some folks just have a conspiratorial nature. Best to ignore.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/11/jon-stewart-defends-joe-rogan-over-covid-misinformation/

Jon Stewart is coming to the defense of fellow podcaster Joe Rogan over the uproar surrounding misinformation about vaccines that has prompted calls for Spotify to sever ties with its $100 million star. Stewart, the former star of Comedy Centrals Daily Show who is now hosting his own gabfest on Apples streaming service, said on Thursday that canceling Rogan would be akin to banning Stewart from television for his opposition to the Iraq War in 2003. The New York Times, right, was a giant purveyor of misinformation, and disinformation, Stewart said of the newspapers editorial support for the Iraq war. And thats as vaunted a media organization as you can find, but there was no accountability for them. The Times and other mainstream news organizations were criticized for unquestioningly reporting the Bush administrations claims that Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction and that those efforts justified the US invasion. No such weapons were ever found in Iraq after American troops removed Hussein from power and installed a friendly government in Baghdad.

Stewart said on Thursday that while he was very vocal in opposing the Iraq War in 2003, he was in the minority. Couldnt I have gone down and fallen down this if Viacom or Comedy Central had wanted to censor me or had wanted to take me off the look, Im not owed a platform. Nobody is, he said. Stewart then added: But my point is, these are shifting sands, and I think I get concerned with, well, who gets to decide? Rogan hit out at mainstream media outlets such as CNN on Thursday, calling them dishonest for their portrayal of his podcast. The host of The Joe Rogan Experience called out CNN media reporter Brian Stelter and primetime host Don Lemon personally, saying: Stop this editorial perspective with guys like Brian Stelter and Don Lemon that nobody listens to. Rogan added: Nobody is, like, chiming in saying, Oh yeah, finally we get the voice of reason. Nobody thinks that.

A Texas man who had been sleeping with his own sister beat her to death with a baseball bat after he found out she had sex with another man, prosecutors said. Jose Manuel Guzman, 32, allegedly killed his sister in the Canutillo home they shared when he attacked her with a massage instrument and a bat, the El Paso County district attorney told the El Paso Times. Guzman allegedly snapped after he learned of his sister being with a male friend who visited a night earlier. He then tried to mop up the blood in the home and fled as he heard law enforcement approaching, according to the Times. He was later arrested and slapped with a murder charge and is in jail on a $1 million bond. Prosecutors say Guzman is from Guatemala and a legal US resident, although he is not a US citizen. He has lived in El Paso since he was 3 years old and only recently learned that he had a sister in Guatemala. They met and allegedly began a sexual relationship, according to authorities. El Paso prosecutors said Guzman was a drug dealer with previous criminal charges, including a 2017 case where he is accused of breaking a mans arm with a baseball bat and smashing his windows. He also reportedly has previous family violence and drug possession cases.

A father from upstate New York was seen on video being forcibly tossed from a school board meeting this week after he refused to wear a mask. Dave Calus was unmasked while sitting in a chair watching a presentation at a board of education meeting in Webster on Tuesday night when a security guard approached him and asked him to put on a face covering. Callus said he told the guard Thank you, but refused to cover up. The officer persisted, saying No, you need to put your mask on right now. The security guard then dragged Calus chair towards the back of the room. Callus turned around to confront the security guard but is then pushed out of a back door, video posted to the Facebook page ROC for Educational Freedom Public Page shows. What are you doing?! the woman filming the video yells. What are you doing?! Holy crap. Holy crap. That is assault. That is assault. the woman says. Do you put your hands on our children, too? another lady asks the guard.

The incident occurred one day before New York Gov. Kathy Hochul announced an end to indoor mask mandate for businesses, citing a 93 percent drop in COVID-19 cases following the nationwide surge from the Omicron variant. However, the mandate remains in effect for schools and other state-run facilities. After the encounter, Calus went to urgent care for evaluation, he said Wednesday, on Kimberlys Revolution podcast. He said he was a little sore but otherwise OK. The father of two, who has one son in high school and another in college, claims the incident was unprovoked. I went into the building without a mask on. I signed in and they said you need to wear a mask, he said on the podcast. I said thank you. I signed in, they handed me a mask I did not put the mask on and I put it in my pocket. Calus said the school board separated parents who refused to wear masks from the other abiding parents. They were segregating masked and unmasked parents, he explained. The unmasked parents were going to have to sit in a classroom with a video monitoring watching and listening to the board meeting. He said he was sitting for about 15 or 20 minutes before the guard approached him. He was not surprised that the guard confronted him, as he had heard him approach other maskless parents and ask them to cover their faces. Callus had planned to address the school board about mask mandates, which he is against, before he was removed.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/10/mikaela-shiffrin-done-with-media-at-2022-olympics-amid-struggles/

Mikaela Shiffrin will forgo interviews after the US alpine skier grabbed headlines over her second straight disqualification at the 2022 Olympics. Fans took issue specifically with NBC, which aired close coverage of the six-time World Champion in tears on Wednesday, after an unexpected early exit in the first run of the slalom race. On Thursday, Shiffrin issued a statement through a US Olympic spokesperson, per Reuters, that read: Mikaela [nor her mother/coach Eileen] will not be doing any media for the foreseeable future. Thank you for respecting her/their space right now. Shiffrin reportedly fielded questions from reporters for 45 minutes after her elimination in the slalom when she skidded out of control and missed a gate just seconds into the event. NBC aired an interview with Shiffrin immediately after, showing footage of her looking somber while sitting in the snow alongside her skis.

While fighting back tears, Shiffrin said her performance makes [her] second-guess the last 15 years Just processing a lot for sure, and I feel really bad. During the broadcast, NBC commentators spoke at length about Shiffrins struggles in her specialty race on Wednesday and noted her first disqualification two days prior in the giant slalom race, in which she was the defending gold medalist. Shiffrin did not finish the giant slalom race after she crashed 11 seconds into the opening run on Monday. Twitter critics came down on the network for focusing on Shiffrin in the devastating moment, as well as NBC commentators for a number of remarks about the 26-year-old. One broadcaster called Shiffrins performance one of the biggest shockers in alpine skiing history. The same commentator later said, When you think of past disappointments in past Olympics in any sports, this is just hard to believe. Its going to be way up there on the list of Olympics disappointments that you could ever imagine. Another added, That will play in slow motion for ages to come in her mind, and called Shiffrins slip-up almost a rookie mistake. On Wednesday night, NBC executive producer Molly Solomon told The Associated Press that she had no regrets over airing the footage of Shiffrin. We have an obligation in that moment, as the broadcaster of the Olympic games, to cover the moment, Solomon said. Theres no script when theres a wipeout on the slopes or a fall in figure skating. Were watching real people with real emotions in real time and we did everything we were supposed to do.

https://www.dailystar.co.uk/sport/football/adult-star-who-romped-man-26062476

A porn star who claimed she provided escort services for three Manchester United players says worried WAGs slid into her DMs after the explosive interview. Shona River made the sensational allegations about the unnamed trio in a podcast last year and it didn't take long for the footballers' flames to ask for names and to demand all the juicy details. The 29-year-old has now given an exclusive interview to the Daily Star about the romps, which saw a wealthy Premier League player pay her less than her agreed fee. She told us: I was really shocked at the reaction to the podcast because I was not trying to embarrass the player. "I was really surprised it went so viral and immediately felt a little guilty. I was getting messages on Instagram from girls saying, Hey, my boyfriend is in Manchester United and I was wondering if he was with you I was like Oh my god this is so weird. Shona, who is from Hungary, had claimed to have been hired by three United stars in the past on the How To Be A Pornstar podcast. And she claimed one player took 200 (equivalent to around 160) off her fee without telling her. She told the pod: "I asked him about it, and he said, sorry, I ordered pizza for my friends, and I took it because I didn't have any other money."

And Shona has now shared her views on what elite footballers are like as clients. She said: They are all different. I have had writers and comedians and they were super nice. If I take footballers, because Ive had more, I can just generally say they have a bigger ego I think. They all say how hot and popular they are and a writer doesnt say that. They dont understand that what I do is a service. There is no discount if you are hot. Shona claimed the Manchester United star who bought a pizza has not been in touch since. The escort first started porn five years ago when she was an engineering student. But Shona - who also makes money on OF - now enjoys escorting, saying it is more liberating than porn. She explained: When I am escorting those people really like me. I am like a Goddess to them. In porn, on the shoot I feel like Im not that special because they have this role, step brother having sex with step sister for example, it just reinforces cliches. Its the same thing over and over. But meeting a big fan they really treat me like a princess or Goddess. People think escorting is degrading but its actually the opposite. She recently spoke about what it is like inside Britains biggest secret fetish club - from live sex to dungeons.

https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-10495339/Al-Sharpton-calls-NYC-Mayor-Eric-Adams-crack-rampant-shoplifting.html

Crime has gotten so bad in New York City that even Reverend Al Sharpton is calling on new Mayor Eric Adams to crack down on shoplifters after the civil rights leader saw basic items like toothpaste locked up at his local pharmacy. Sharpton, a Brooklyn native, 67, has had enough of the New York City crime spree, with the last straw being his locked-up dental care, saying the lawlessness is 'out of control.' 'Eric, they're locking up my toothpaste,' Sharpton said on MSNBC's Morning Joe as he gave a long and hard stare into the camera. 'You go into a local pharmacies - Duane Reade or Rite Aid, any of them - and you got to get someone to help assist you. They have the little button there, you hit the buzzer, the guy comes over, and unlocks your toothpaste - we're talking about basic stuff here.' Pharmacies like Duane Reade, CVS, and Rite Aid have always locked up certain items, such as razor blades, but as more and more thieves are looting the shelves, stores have begun putting up extra protection. A Rite Aid on Manhattan's Upper East Side will be closing due to brazen thieves hitting the store on multiple occasions. Shelves were already bare in the store, located at the corner of 80th Street and 2nd Avenue, but it will shut its doors for good on February 15, the manager told DailyMail.com last month, a day after a thief was caught on video boldly sauntering out with shopping bags full of stolen goods.

Host Joe Scarborough said Eric Adams, 61 - whose only been Mayor since January 1 - is 'surrounded by elected officials who want New York to remain chaotic.' Scarborough may have been referring to the Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg, 48, whose controversial policy has lowered many crimes to misdemeanors and have left many store owners and employees having to turn a blind eye to theft. However, Sharpton cut the mayor some slack, and acknowledged that he's 'only been there five weeks,' but noted that 'there is a debate in the criminal justice system' on how to handle these issues. He said: 'There are those that are concerned, including me, about overloading the system in the jails with petty crime, but at the same time, you cannot have a culture where people are just at random, just robbing and stealing and is out of control, and is put on the front page of newspapers, which only encourages others to do it.'

A man stabbed a teen in the arm on an Upper Manhattan train after she ignored him when he asked for the time early Thursday, cops said. The 19-year-old victim was on a No. 1 train at 181st Street in Washington Heights around 12:30 a.m. with her boyfriend, when a man approached and asked both of them for the time, police said. He repeated the question multiple times, but they ignored him, cops said. The man briefly turned away from the two straphangers, but then turned back and knifed the teen on the arm, police said. She was taken to New York-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia in stable condition. The suspect fled from the train at 168th Street, police said.

At least three other people were stabbed in Upper Manhattan and the Bronx overnight, police said. About 15 minutes after the subway attack, a 39-year-old man was stabbed in the neck during a dispute with another man on University Avenue near West Kingsbridge Road in the Kingsbridge Heights section of the Bronx, cops said. He went to St. Barnabas Hospital in stable condition, and the suspect took off, police said. A 24-year-old man was stabbed from behind, in the back and right thigh, just after midnight as he walked at Broadway and West 147th Street in Hamilton Heights, cops said. He was taken to Harlem Hospital in stable condition. The circumstances of the attack are unclear, and he was described as uncooperative. A 52-year-old man was also stabbed in the upper right arm at Amsterdam Avenue and West 145th Street, also in Hamilton Heights, around 9:50 p.m. Wednesday, cops said. He was taken to Harlem Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. The motive was not immediately known.

https://www.cnn.com/2022/02/08/economy/starbucks-fires-workers-memphis-union/index.html

Starbucks fired seven workers who were involved in unionizing in Memphis, Tennessee, fueling accusations that the company is retaliating against a growing labor movement at its locations across the United States. Starbucks (SBUX) denied that the firings were linked to the employees' organizing efforts. A company spokesman, Reggie Borges, said the workers were fired for serious security violations. The firings stem from an incident last month in which the employees allowed members of the media into the store as part of the public launch of their unionization effort. Borges told CNN Business that Starbucks employees are allowed to speak freely with media if they choose, but that the members of the press and some of the staff did not have authorization to be in the store after the close of business. The employees allowed the media into the private back-of-house area while leaving an unlocked door unattended, Borges said. Another staffer opened a safe when they weren't authorized to do so. "These egregious actions and blatant violations cannot be ignored," Borges said in an email. "As a result of our investigation, several partners involved are no longer with Starbucks given the significant violations of these policies."

Starbucks Workers United, the union helping several stores organize, accused the company of "union-busting" and selectively enforcing those policies to target union leaders. "I was fired by Starbucks today for 'policies' that I've never heard of before and that I've never been written up about before," said Nikki Taylor, a shift supervisor, in a press release from the union. Borges disputed the accusation, saying that all Starbucks employees receive training related to store security, and are made aware that violating the policy may result in termination. The Memphis firings come just two months after a cafe in Buffalo, New York, became the first American Starbucks to unionize. Labor organizers say more than 50 other stores across the United States are also pursuing union elections. Even though the Buffalo effort affected just 100 employees, Starbucks fought hard against the effort, sending in the company's top brass to try to influence the vote. The company argues that it already offers many benefits that others in the industry do not, including health care coverage for part-time workers and college tuition reimbursement. Its average wage is more than $12 an hour, the company says, adding that more than half of its US employees earn more than $15 an hour.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/08/couple-arrested-in-alleged-4-5-billion-cryptocurrency-laundering-scheme/

A married couple was busted in Manhattan on Tuesday for allegedly trying to launder roughly $4.5 billion in cryptocurrency stolen during a massive 2016 hack, federal prosecutors said. Ilya Dutch Lichtenstein, 34, and his rapper wife, Heather Morgan, 31, are accused of conspiring to wash the proceeds of 119,754 bitcoin that were looted when a hacker breached the systems of virtual currency exchange Bitfinex. The stolen cryptocurrency was allegedly transferred to a digital wallet controlled by Lichtenstein, who describes himself as a Technology entrepreneur, coder and investor on his LinkedIn account. He and his wife a self-professed Serial Entrepreneur and surrealist rap creator then moved the funds to their accounts via a complicated money laundering process, prosecutors said. The couple allegedly spent the illegal proceeds on things like gold, NFTs and a $500 Walmart gift card, according to the criminal complaint unsealed Tuesday. As part of the scheme, the duo allegedly employed numerous sophisticated laundering techniques including setting up online accounts under bogus identities and moving the money through the darknet, prosecutors said. Prosecutors said the pair had a bag labeled burner phones filled with cellphones inside their Manhattan apartment, and that Lichtenstein, a dual Russia-US citizen, kept a file called passport_ideas on his computer.

The Justice Department said special agents were able to recover over $3.6 billion in bitcoin stolen during the Bitfinex hack its largest-ever financial seizure. Todays arrests, and the departments largest financial seizure ever, show that cryptocurrency is not a safe haven for criminals, said Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco. Bitfinex said it was working with the DOJ to establish our rights to a return of the stolen bitcoin. Lichtenstein and Morgan are facing charges of conspiring to commit money laundering, as well as to defraud the US. If convicted of both counts, they could each face a maximum sentence of 25 years. The couple were married last year. They got engaged in 2019, according to a Facebook post from Lichtenstein in which he said his bride was my best friend and the woman of my dreams and not just a tech entrepreneur but also a fearless rapper. Morgan has released a number of rap songs under the alter ego Razzlekhan, described as like Genghis Khan, but with more pizzazz on her website. She also offers productivity tips, according to her Instagram. In one bizarre 2019 music video titled Rap Anthem for Misfits & Weirdos: Versace Bedouin Music Video, Morgan can be seen bouncing around Wall Street in a gold jacket, leopard-print scarf, sunglasses and hat with an entourage as she raps: Come real far but I dont know where Im headin. Im the motherfing crocodile of Wall Street.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/08/iranian-man-carries-wifes-head-after-honor-killing/

A shocking video captured an Iranian man grinning as he walked through the streets clutching the severed head of his 17-year-old wife whom he decapitated in an honor killing, according to a report. The gruesome footage shows Sajjad Heydari strolling through a neighborhood in Ahvaz, a city in the southwestern province of Khuzestan, on Saturday with Mona Heydaris head in one hand and a blade in the other, East2West News reported. Mona, who also was Sajjads cousin, had been forced to marry him when she was just 12 years old, according to the Womens Committee of the National Council of Resistance of Iran. She reportedly suffered domestic abuse but was pressured to stay put for the sake of their 3-year-old son, even though she had expressed her wish to divorce the brute. The teen finally escaped to Turkey but returned after finding it tough to live alone in another country, the news outlet reported. A few days later, Sajjad and his brother allegedly tied her hands and chopped off her head. Her body was dumped before her husband paraded through the streets with her head.

A police official said the motive for the murder was family differences. The two men were reportedly arrested, but it was unclear what punishment they are likely to face. Abbas Hosseini-Pouya, prosecutor general of Ahvaz, the provincial capital of Khuzestan, said Mona had sent photos of herself to her husband from Turkey that had fueled his negative emotions, according to Iran International. The womens committee said that not a week goes by without some form of honor killing making headlines. The clerical regimes failure to criminalize these murders has led to a catastrophic rise in honor killings. In a report published in 2019, the state-run Sharq daily newspaper wrote that an annual average of 375 to 450 honor killings are recorded in Iran, the resistance council said. The catastrophic rise in honor killings in Iran is rooted in misogyny and the patriarchal culture institutionalized in the laws and society, the group continued. Although the father, brother or husband holds the knife, sickle or rifle, the murders are rooted in the medieval outlook of the ruling regime. The clerical regimes laws officially denote that women are second-degree citizens owned by men, it added.

https://nypost.com/2022/02/08/female-ski-jumpers-disqualified-over-clothing-at-2022-olympics/

The womens ski jumping mixed team competition at the 2022 Olympics was overshadowed by multiple disqualifications over athletes outfits. Five female ski jumpers representing Austria, Japan, Norway (twice) and Germany were disqualified from the competition for wearing loose-fitting suits. According to news.com.au, it was determined that the clothing could give athletes an advantage while in the air. After Germanys Katharina Althaus was disqualified in the first the round, she reportedly was brought to tears and accused the International Ski Federation (FIS) of destroying and damaging womens ski jumping. I have been checked so many times in 11 years of ski jumping, and I have never been disqualified once, I know my suit was compliant, Althaus wrote in a post on Instagram. 160 World Cup starts, 5x World Championships, 3x Olympic Games and I got DSQ for the first time. My heart is broken. Anna Odine Strm, one of the Norwegians disqualified, said officials had used a different method to measure their suits from previous events in the Games. It was a bit strange and didnt conform to how its been done in the past, Strm said

German ski jumper star Karl Geiger addressed the situation on social media and questioned the rules and regulations for female ski jumpers. We stick together no matter what! Nevertheless, I have to ask myself whether the regulations for the women were changed overnight, with so many disqualifications?!? It was neither the right time nor the right place to disqualify so many athletes from different nations, Geiger wrote on Instagram. According to news.com.au, Germanys national team coach Stefan Horngacher said the controversy is not good for the sport but the rules have to be accepted. Horngacher added, It is just strange that they have been using the same suits (Saturday) and there was no problem. Norwegian ski jumping chief of sports Clas Brede Braathen reportedly apologized on behalf of ski jumping and said, This is something we should have cleaned up in before the Olympics. The sport of ski jumping has experienced one of its darker days today. Slovenia ended up winning the womens ski jumping mixed team competition by a stretch with 1,001.5 points. Russia came in second (890.3), followed by Canada (844.6).
