Jon Stewart is coming to the defense of fellow podcaster Joe Rogan over the uproar surrounding misinformation about vaccines that has prompted calls for Spotify to sever ties with its $100 million star. Stewart, the former star of Comedy Centrals Daily Show who is now hosting his own gabfest on Apples streaming service, said on Thursday that canceling Rogan would be akin to banning Stewart from television for his opposition to the Iraq War in 2003. The New York Times, right, was a giant purveyor of misinformation, and disinformation, Stewart said of the newspapers editorial support for the Iraq war. And thats as vaunted a media organization as you can find, but there was no accountability for them. The Times and other mainstream news organizations were criticized for unquestioningly reporting the Bush administrations claims that Saddam Hussein was developing weapons of mass destruction and that those efforts justified the US invasion. No such weapons were ever found in Iraq after American troops removed Hussein from power and installed a friendly government in Baghdad.

Stewart said on Thursday that while he was very vocal in opposing the Iraq War in 2003, he was in the minority. Couldnt I have gone down and fallen down this if Viacom or Comedy Central had wanted to censor me or had wanted to take me off the look, Im not owed a platform. Nobody is, he said. Stewart then added: But my point is, these are shifting sands, and I think I get concerned with, well, who gets to decide? Rogan hit out at mainstream media outlets such as CNN on Thursday, calling them dishonest for their portrayal of his podcast. The host of The Joe Rogan Experience called out CNN media reporter Brian Stelter and primetime host Don Lemon personally, saying: Stop this editorial perspective with guys like Brian Stelter and Don Lemon that nobody listens to. Rogan added: Nobody is, like, chiming in saying, Oh yeah, finally we get the voice of reason. Nobody thinks that.

Getting some mixed signals here - first he's implying that he'd be in favor of bringing the NYT to task for their own misinformation, but then he's defending Joe almost exclusively on the grounds that Joe's this 'lone voice of dissention' type like Stewart was in 2003, despite the fact that Joe's misinformation is also sending people to their untimely deaths.

He ain't exactly wrong, but he ain't right either.

Fuck Joe Rogan but so far all of you are missing his point completely. One little sentence you must have all missed.

The stuff about Iraq war is he's saying he was in the minority, just like Rogan is. His point is who decides what is and isn't right to say. Back then the Dixie Chicks were shunned for speaking out against Bush. Jon Stewart could have had the same troubles if mob mentality won out.

I'm not saying I agree with him, it's just clear his point went well over your heads.

I mean, technically it could if the narrative NYT was spinning was true.

Everyone opposes the war so they don't go after Saddam.

Saddam actually has WMD and uses them.

It's weird

Like, Stewart lambasts the NYT for spreading m/disinformation, then defends Rogan for spreading m/disinformation? And it's okay because Rogan is "the minority" (hint: no, he isn't)

Whatever

People should be held responsible for whatever crap they say.

But I agree this waffling from one extreme to the other is getting old. "I like so-and-so, well now I hate them" isn't really helping.

What he is saying is that an Official List of Things That Can be Said is dangerous. Theres no requirement that such a thing be based in truth and if one had existed back then, hed have been shut down despite being right. So we should be hesitant about trying to create one that shuts down someone who is wrong, because next time it might be used on someone who is right.

I mean, such things already exist. You can't go and tell people to drink bleach on your news show, you can't call for killing people, racism etc is a big no-no and so on.

We live in a world that already censors things people can and cannot say and for some reason spreading dangerous medical misinformation that gets people killed is something we have to vehemently defend.

This is a bad take and not Stewart's first on Covid.

I feel like dudes like Stewart and Maher are so used to anti PC, think of the children screaming types who have been trying to censor and cancel them for decades.

And now they can't tell the difference between "When you say poopy poopy bum bum you hurt my feelings." and "When you say vaccines don't work, don't wear masks and go to mass gatherings during a pandemic, you get people killed and flood hospitals to the point of overflowing, causing utter chaos and mass suffering."

There's a huge difference and the fact it's considered political stance or "Views" or "opinions" is crazy.

This isn't "What should the tax rate be on imported Pineapples?" it's basic common sense. And the people opposing it are intentionally or not (usually intentionally) lying through their teeth because there is tremedous money to be made off the grift.

Never ever forget the entire ORIGIN of the Anti-Vaxxer movement was a grift. A doctor was being paid by a lawyer to fabricate false vaccine related illnesses (he literally invented a fake condition) so the lawyer could make bank off a class action lawsuit.

The doctor then made bank off "Don't get THEIR vaccines, get mine." and once that grift dried up, made bank off "Actually don't get any vaccines."

It has always always always always always been a corrupt attempt to milk cash from the stupid at the cost of blood.

Stewart isn't exactly wrong here but he didn't deliver his point in the best/most poignant way either.

You should be skeptical of people who want to dictate (exactly) what you can and cannot say about a(ny) subject. If the MSM had been sufficiently motivated enough, they probably could have turned Stewart into persona non grata over his opposition to the Iraq War.

Stewart is just saying we should exercise caution here.

the right tends to canonize their favorite politicians and media figures and treat them with cult-like devotion to the point where they can literally do no wrong, and it breaks their brains when the left actually doesn't behave the same way and doesn't just take every single thing their politicians and media figures say as scripture, but instead examines the things being said with critical thinking to determine whether they are valid or not regardless of the source, instead of feebly bending their worldview to fall in line with their messiah's narrative and pretending afterward like they never believed any different.
