I'm getting pretty curious what this KH banner is going to look like. Also maybe even more curious what banner they'll drop on Sunday since KH probably won't have two.

i'm glad to have Orlandu's BSB to fall back on, especially with Marche available to make it and the commands a bearable cast time, cause i did have to use that at the end.

Yeah... I've been pleasantly surprised that his SSB (the only other thing I have for him) is relevant too. If he's already in EX mode then the instant cast +2 instant actions just gives him some extra damage output.

Probably Beyond but no one knows for sure yet.

I tried using Orlandu against Ixion but so far I haven't been able to win. Gaia's Cross means the first dispel always targets Orlandu and removes his blink, then the AOE dispel actually hits him and Earthbringer is only doing 3 hits after that. I really wish we had Earth Saber instead... maybe the Ninja Earth skills in about a month will help me.

Hard to tell... it seems like a great opener, but you probably want her BSB to go with it so she has a Medica.

Used a stamina potion to get Assault Saber, and got a 18.86 on Shadow Dragon just by plugging in Orlandu & Shelke where I used to have Beatrix & Minfilia. Blew right through the dark fangs. I was only using Orlandu and Raines for DPS, I'd imagine a YOLO team would just demolish him (especially if you have Marche for quickcasts)

Congrats on getting the USB/LMR combo (and for Marche too!)

This was all the mythril I had left since I drew on the water banner and the Dissidia banner. I'm at about 40ish now so I'll be able to do one pull on the KH banner if it's good enough to justify it.

I really want to try my new toys against Dark Dragon, but first I need to complete the event to get assault saber. Oh well. Might see what I can do against Ixion first. Time to finally use all those earth orbs!

100 gem: 3* junk.
First pull: 3 rainbows: Alma LMR, Ramza LMR x2
Second pull: 2 discos! and 1 rainbow: Chaosbringer (dupe), Excalibur Trueblade x2

Nice!!! Got both of my top prizes (two copies of each, even). Would still like Orlandu OSB and LMR, but in JP they got OSB/BSB/LMR selection banners at the 3rd anniversary. If we get those, Orlandu is the obvious choice for OSB.

I used to think Orlandeau was a banner I needed to draw on, but at this point, I honestly feel like I should just skip it.

Cid and Marche USBs are the only relics that would really be amazing. The LMRs are ok, but really only worth it if you also get the USB.
I much prefer the OK Ninja package with double instant cast, which I got after lots of mythril, over Ramza's BSB2 and LMR.

You're totally right about the LMRs only being good if you have the SBs to go with them. For me though, I already have every SB for Ramza and nothing for OK except his SSBs.

I also agree with OK pUSB being better than Ramza BSB2, but I mostly use Ramza USB. That's the only one that enables mixed teams, and with Ramza's LMR everyone on your team gets an instant action on their first turn which is awesome for getting up and running quickly. The only downside is it's wasted on characters who start with their own instant actions like Shelke and Lightning.

Orlandu's ability double seems really good. I would rather have Vivi's, but sadly DeNa has a habit of always putting his relics on banners with a bunch of Steiner and Kuja garbage (I despise both characters) so I never get to draw for him.

Rinoa can't wrath through and most people are going to use her for her chain, so she either needs a dedicated battery for two bars or Snow's chain (who can't use any ice skills without a BSB) Using them both together is a little faster since Ysayle's sudden freeze can trigger her quickcast LM so she builds meter faster by herself. Ysayle can also use her chase after Valigarmanda while Rinoa's only trigger's after black magic for what it's worth.

Hmm, the last one is a good point - at first I was thinking triggering off Black is better than triggering off Ice, but in reality it's the opposite.

On the first point though, I don't have any ice chain or any good ice soul breaks at all (nothing better than mid-tier BSBs like Serah or Umaro). I probably won't have any mythril left after Orlandu anyway, so I just have to hope we eventually get a good ice banner, hopefully in the 3rd anniversary.

after not getting Cloud USB from the lucky draw, i decided to gamble 1 pull on the Dissidia 2 banner. got Ramza LMR and Noctis SSB. Ramza LMR was my second-most wanted thing from that banner so i'm probably gonna stop there. 8/14 dupes at this point.

and after getting that Ramza LMR i sub-30'd Fenrir today. i don't think Ramza LMR made the difference but probably makes it more reliable. i never actually tried before getting it. i also tried the Raijin SSB strat against Tiamat for fun and was able to about half kill it, which i found kinda funny. i probably need some maxed out 4* magicite, Shelke dive, and some better secondary ice DPS to be able to actually pull it off.

NIce! Ramza LMR was honestly probably my #1 prize on that banner and maybe my #2 on the Orlandu banner. It just speeds you up so much.

And yeah, I'm not interested in Ysayle just because I've never played XIV. But also Rinoa's is almost the same in 2 weeks and that banner has more ice overall (and fewer dupes for me).

I think so. His LM2 is the same as Lightning/Shelke, which is awesome because you can use his slow OSB instantly and then you're in thunder god mode. Or just use his USB on turn 1 and you're doublecasting knight abilities in the first 4 seconds. So hyped (but I'm sure I'll get crappy pulls and not be able to use him).

Also there's a 5 hit holy knight ability in this event. Lower multiplier than Guardbringer but way easier to use.

Garnet BSB2 is +lightning, I'd be pretty happy to get that.

Anyway, decided to try out my new Locke BSB against Isgebind and got a 33.95 on my first try. That's 13 seconds faster than my last clear, but I also got level 99 Bomb King and Maralith since then. Also I got lots of doublecasts from Papalymo. Still, 30 feels in reach.

I broke down the USBs (and two CSBs) in tonight's draw by element just to see what's available for Magicite help. Some of these are multiple element but if they have a primary element I put it under that.

Fire: 8 (Terra, Locke, Locke CSB, Sabin, Cyan, Vincent, Vivi, Balthier)

Wind: 4 (Zack CSB, Cloud, Cid, Zidane)

Lightning: 3 (Reno, Garnet, Ashe)

Dark: 3 (Shadow, Sephiroth, Gabranth)

Water: 1 (Yuffie)

Earth: 1 (Tifa)

Ice: 1 (Fran)

Holy: 1 (Basch)

Multi: 1 (Steiner - Fire/Ice/Lightning)

Non: 1 (Vaan)

Healing: 4 (Relm, Aerith, Eiko, Penelo)

Buff: 2 (Mog, Red XIII)

Debuff: 1 (Setzer)

I don't have his BSB2 but my two main questions would be whether he's at the atk soft cap after buffs (805 atk) and whether you're using Thunder God's Might on him to get more full power hits with the burst.

Are you guys doing the dungeon updates or waiting for the reward increase that's supposed to come around the 3rd anniversary? I haven't done the last one yet but now I kinda want to do them so I have more mythril for Orlandu.

Yeah, broken soul wasn't too bad. Difficulty was fairly low to compensate. I did use the new 5* bard ability for the first time (the stacking attack buff) but in retrospect I didn't need it.

I was working hard on Kraken yesterday. I got my kill down to 33.18, and I had another one that was one hit away at 30.24 but I restarted, that one probably would have been a 31 or 32. I really could use Lightning's doublecast LMR instead of that 2nd copy of Tidus's, sigh.

Gonna draw on tonight's lucky draw and hope to get lucky. Top five prizes for me are probably:

1. Zack Chain
2. Vivi USB
3. Locke Chain
4. Zidane USB
5. Vaan USB

The pull I did I got Ramza BSB2 and a dupe Tidus LMR. Having two Tidus LMRs isn't totally useless since I can use the water boost, but I would have spent my $30 on something else if I'd known about the banner (since I would have waited to select).

Guys who have Tidus CSB/USB - are you giving him Thunder God Mode RM? I think it's the way to go. But you probably still need at least one other character with a solid water SB to get sub 30. FWIW I don't use Protectga against Malaris and physical attacks aren't a problem.

Yeah, personally I'm not a fan of the crystal tower because if you screw up after the first fight you have to repeat and that sucks.

I like 4* Magicite because it's a challenge but there's no time pressure, if it's too hard you can just leave it until your team gets stronger. The only thing that conflicts with that is the keystones, if you can't beat any Magicite then it sucks because it feels like you're falling behind wasting keystones.

The game definitely can be frustrating and about a month or two ago I was pretty close to quitting. I've gotten back into it though and am actually enjoying it a fair amount right now.

Congrats! Malaris is still the only 4* I can sub 30.

Still dunno what to do about tonight's banner. It's good, but I think the Orlandu banner is better. I could just do one pull here and save the rest for Orlandu... the problem with that is it's a lot stronger to get one character's whole kit than get like one OK USB and Orlandu LMR or something. But also I just don't want to wait two more weeks.

the game is actually better if you dont recruit every one.

as a true Nanami fangirl, I strongly disagree!!

I love Nanami, but IMO the "good" ending just... doesn't work. It's by far the weakest part of the story.

Spoiler

Faking her own death... what the hell kind of horrible nasty trick is that?!?! I can't actually like Nanami if she's someone who would trick her brother into believing she was dead (not to mention Dr. Huan going along with it) - it's just too cruel and utterly stupid. What they should have done is put the branch before her death scene and made her block the last arrow if you have all the characters.

Also, the idea of the three mains just walking off into the sunset together doesn't fit with the rest of the game. Jowy and Riou can't just reconcile after they fought a war against each other. In my view the story's tragedy isn't just having to fight against your best friend, it's that ultimately... your best friend turns into an evil person. Riou still feels friendship for him but they can't just go off and live happily ever after. IMO the ending at the waterfall is the perfect conclusion to that story - although I would have preferred a version where Nanami survives (without the fake death thing).

1. Suikoden 2

To me, Genso Suikoden II is the pinnacle of the JRPG genre. It basically does everything I like about the genre while minimizing everything I dont like. On the good side you have stuff like lots of recruitable characters, minigames, building up your own town/castle, multiple combat systems, multi-character combo attacks, multiple endings, 2d art (with light 3d effects at some points). On the list of stuff I dont like about JRPGs - it basically all falls under the category of grinding, and they do away with it completely. The minigames are optional, the characters are either optional or unmissible, theres never any need to grind for levels.

The 108(+) playable characters is an example of how they take things to ridiculous extremes. Obviously Suikoden 1 did this first, but Suikoden 2 did a great job of bringing back cool characters from the original and creating a bunch more. Fortunately, many are optional and I think the game is actually better if you dont recruit every one. But as well as characters, minigames are another area where they kind of go overboard. Most of them are kind of pointless (as minigames usually are) but the Iron Chef minigame stands as one of the greatest minigames of all time. The combat is standard JRPG fare but very fast - but there are also two alternate combat systems: one for large army battles and one for one on one duels. Neither one is terribly deep but theyre both used infrequently enough that theyre a really cool change of pace to highlight important story moments.

Its a bit of a paradox that Suikoden 2 is both huge and small at the same time - theres a ton of stuff you can do and yet the game is half the length of a lot of JRPGs just because everything moves so quickly. But the best part of the game is definitely the story. Its just a moving and emotional story, augmented with a great soundtrack by Miki Higashino. It has one of the most despicable villains in any game Ive played and an epic sequence to take him down - but thats not the end of the game. I cant say enough good things about Suikoden 2, it just has everything I want from a JRPG.

Alright, top 3:

3. Braid

Its kind of amazing how well everything in Braid came together, especially when you consider many of the assets werent even created specifically for the game. Braid grabbed me from the title screen, where I just had to stop and look at the flaming background while I listened to Maenam play. Both the gameplay and the story are things that could only exist in reference to established tropes - the gameplay does an outstanding job of adding interesting twists to established formulae and playing around with them just enough to be interesting but not wasting your time with filler. If theres a strike against Braid its that ultimately I think the story tries to make itself look deeper than it really is (the Oppenheimer quote is the most obvious example), but the fact that the style was good enough to even pass itself off as being that deep rather than seeming fake or pretentious is an achievement in itself. The style (text) and the gameplay also meld perfectly in the final stage such that the twist feels like the logical conclusion of the game and the story, while being surprising because it subverts convention.

2. Sid Meiers Alpha Centauri

The best Final Fantasy game is a spinoff, but the best Civilization game doesnt even have Civilization in the title. What makes SMAC far and away better than every other Sid Meier game? I like the word atmosphere a lot but really I think it would probably be better described as flavor. Civ games have always had kind of a fundamental goofiness with the idea of people like Gandhi and Abe Lincoln leading civilizations in 4000 BC, and somehow living through the entire game to the present day. Not to mention all kinds of completely ahistoric events that happen in every game. Freed from the constraints of the past, the SMAC team came up with a set of flavorful factions that made sense and played brilliantly. Each faction had an agenda, a gameplay design that fit with that agenda, and most importantly a bunch of great quotes read by awesome voice actors that showcased their ideology. (True, a few of the factions in the expansion were duds, but all of the original 7 were super well designed - even if I hate some of them like freaking Sister Miriam). Then you have the planet itself, and the light but well done storyline related to that.

Mechanically, being able to customize your units is a big improvement over having a list of specific units to build and provided a lot more diversity to what you could do while ALSO making it easier to comprehend - you instantly know a 6-1-2 is better than a 4-1-2 and once you know what each number is (attack, defense, and move) you can compare any two units. Finally, researching future tech is just more exciting than literally reinventing the wheel.

Sorry, went over character limit (how appropriate) so #1 is in the next post.

Anyway I realized I'm too lazy to do a real top 50 (and I don't think too many people would care) so I'm gonna hijack Luke's topic for a quick top 10. (I hope he doesn't mind... let me know if you want me to delete this)

10. Final Fantasy IV

Originally this spot was going to be FF6, but when I was thinking about it I realized I just love 4 more. In a lot of ways 6 is the superior game, but FF IV to me is just more fun. Its light hearted and fast paced. It has a great Uematsu soundtrack - not his best, but for the first SNES FF it was pretty amazing for the time. Sure the story doesnt make much sense but the characters are super likeable. For me this kind of set the bar for what an RPG should be.

9. Super Metroid

Super Metroid is kind of on the list more out of respect than love. I do enjoy the game but it probably wouldnt land in the top 10 on that alone. But this game is a master class in game design. On top of that the spooky soundtrack, the feeling of being all alone on an alien planet, the sense of exploration just excellent.

8. Rock Band 2

In a way this is a stand in for the whole Rock Band series, but 2 is the first one I got hooked on and also the one with the best on-disc setlist - seriously, the songs in this game are awesome. Ive spent so many hours on this game. Before Harmonix did its thing, who would have thought strumming a plastic guitar could be fun?

7. Starcraft: Brood War

The original Starcraft hasnt aged very well, but at the time it was just pure brilliance. (Im pretty sure this game took the top spot the last time I did a list around 2006ish). Great single player experience, multiplayer so deep and balanced it spawned an entire industry in Korea.

6. Final Fantasy Tactics

Ironically, the best Final Fantasy game is a spinoff. Although it didnt have Uematsu, it combined the traditional FF strengths of story and music with a combat system that was actually deep and interesting in its own right. The traditional job classes made it feel like Final Fantasy, but the tactical isometric gameplay made it something different and better.

5. Master of Orion 2

I had played Civilization 1 a little bit, but MOO2 was the first 4X game that really hooked me with the one...more...turn thing. The first time I played MOO2 I literally had dreams about it where I was wondering if it was morning yet so I could play the game some more. MOO2 had an awesome atmosphere, cool alien races, the ability to explore star systems and design your own ships, up to and including death stars (okay, doom stars). When it comes to 4X, exploring space and the future has always felt more compelling to me than revisiting the past.

4. Baldurs Gate 2

BG2 set the standard for what an epic RPG could be. Soo many quests and areas to explore, a main story that was pretty amazing and deeper than most others at the time, a big cast of characters who you have to choose between (encouraging replays), an awesome villain voiced by David Warner. The fact that this was built on 2nd edition D&D rules might be a downside for some people but for me it was a huge positive since I spent so much time learning and playing them as a kid.

Top 3 will come later and probably some honorable mentions... guess if you feel like or don't.

Yeah, I wish I had Lightning's LMR too. But I'm pretty sure both of the ones I actually took (Tidus LMR and Edge SSB2) are better.

I'm pretty impatient for the Orlandu banner. There's so much good stuff on there. Part of me thinks I should be prioritizing elements I need (especially ice) but that banner is just more exciting.

Oh yeah, I did another pull on the FFIII banner before it went away.

3/11

Refia BSB
Onion Knight LM
Onion Knight Ninja USB

Whew, guess that puts Onion Knight on my main team now.

That's a really nice pull, getting the LM and one of his USBs together is key. I keep thinking about drawing on that banner but I'm afraid of disappointment.

Alright!!! I cleared Isgebind (46.22) and I think this might be my proudest clear because I don't have great fire SBs but I got creative with my strategy and it worked. My best fire SB by far is Papalymo's BSB, so the party was just built around keeping him alive and letting him get as many casts off as quickly as possible with party instant cast. The team was:

Papalymo - Meltdown R3 - Enochian Firaja - Scholar's Boon RM (full legend dive)
Edge - Smoldering Fire R3, Smoldering Fire R2 - Eblan Doppelganger - Ace Striker RM
Ramza - Entrust, Wrath R5 - History's Truth - Mako Might RM
Raijin - Fires Within R3, Meteor Crush R2 - Aura - Battleforged RM
Y'Shtola - Curada R3, Protectga - Asylum, Stoneskin II - Dr. Mog's Teachings RM

RW: Fabula Raider

Edge was the secondary DPS and kept the team alive with blink/last stand, which also prevented most of the paralyze attacks. The interesting thing about this team was Raijin, who I've basically never used before - a second source of last stand gave us an extra safety net, and a second source of party instant actions (along with Ramza) made us a lot faster so we could actually get there relying on Papalymo's burst actions.

I like Mario 2 a lot in theory, but in practice when I actually play a Mario game my go to is 3, then probably 1, then World, and then 2, so I rarely actually play it.

I think I need to finish the list I started putting together 4 months ago. I was looking at the notes I made and at one point I laughed for like 15 seconds at something I had in there.

Finally managed to beat Kraken... it took a lot of tries and I ended up using a two white mage setup. Time was 43.91, so it's got a lot of room for improvement. When I tried to fit Shantotto's chain in there I just didn't have enough defense to stay alive, but I need it if I want a sub-30 kill.

Oh man, surprising top 4! (To me).

Ori was awesome, but I never actually finished it due to the fact that I was playing on a Steam Link which just was kind of inconvenient. I wish it were on PS4. The one thing Ori had that was better than I think any other Metroidvania game (except maybe the one you ranked above it) was... atmosphere. And atmosphere is also the main area where I think SM just blows away ZM. I think a lot of it has to do with the GBA hardware limitations, but SM just has this awesome spooky, lonely, alien vibe that ZM didn't really manage to recreate IMO.

FF V - I only played it once, and it was almost 20 years ago at this point. I should give it another try with one of these four job challenges. The job system is definitely awesome - I think my biggest complaint about it TBH is the soundtrack is pretty weak by Final Fantasy standards. There are a lot of songs that flat out annoy me whereas most FF games just listening to the music is part of what makes it such an enjoyable experience.

Xenogears - man, so much greatness and yet so many flaws in the same game. I seriously wish we could have seen what this game would have been if they had the budget to spend another year on development. The music is incredible, the first half is pretty great, and I *loved* the regular combat system with combos... so fast and smooth for an RPG. But the second disc is just a mess, and I also thought the gear combat was not nearly as fun as the regular combat.

Anyway, cool list!

I think (?) I played ZM before Super too, can't remember for sure at this point. The one thing about ZM compared to Super is that the Zero Suit section felt really cool and original when I first saw it, but on replays it feels kinda annoying and gimmicky to me. Everything before that is awesome though.

Okay, finally caught up.

- Tactics is awesome. Definitely makes my top 10 list as well, and I've settled on it being the best Final Fantasy - it's the only one where the gameplay itself is the really interesting part and not just the barrier to getting more story. (Well, there's Crisis Core, but...). HM, which FF are you calling the best one? My list goes Tactics, 6, 4, 9.

- AA3 is so good. Wouldn't be in my top 10 but man is that final case a ride. From the moment the Kurain Village music starts in the case intro it's an emotional rollercoaster.

Anyway, a couple months back I was thinking of doing my own top 50 and I started some notes but I got lazy. Last time I posted a top 50 list here was I think 2006. I might post a top 10 after Luke finishes his list.

oh man you're a zelda 1 randomizer-er too, huh? heck yeah. someday we should all play a seed together. not a race or anything because screw that.

I would totally be down for that, it would be fun to have people to talk to about it and see if we end up doing stuff in dramatically different orders.
