What do you want them to do, make friends for the kid? At least the two kids nobody wanted to partner up with will have each other.

In 4th grade had a teacher that would throw dry erase markers and erasers at kids that werent paying attention. One kid he hit with a marker just below the eye and gave the kid a black eye. Parents were pissed but nothing happened even after complaining to principal. This was early 90s.

lol I was never that kid actually but they did occasionally assign partners themselves.

I've had multiple English teachers tell me "that word doesn't exist" or "that word is not spelled correctly" until I slapped them with the Oxford dictionary.
Once spend an entire class arguing with an English teacher whom persisted the words "remote control" were pronounced "remute control". Took her ass to the principal as they loved to do the same to me.

That's not to say there aren't some great teachers out there that need to be shown some more love from their students.

Yeah punishing everybody for the actions of one student is toxic af. I (Butters) remember one time in 7th grade when a teacher overheard a curse word and all she knew about who said it was that it was one of the several black girls who were present at the time. As a result, the whole thing turned into an excuse to hold all the black girls hostage for several minutes waiting for the culprit to own up (they never did of course).

I had one of my U.S. history teachers in high school kinda try to push the military as a career option on her classes. She had family in the military and was pro-recruitment.

She even brought in an Air Force recruiter to do his pitch during class-time once. I'm guessing the school management knew about it but it was a bit too much.

The difference being here that English isn't our native language. I fully admit I've always struggled with the "who/whom" thing. But I'm not teaching an English class to non English speaking teenagers insisting I fully grasp the language.

i had two literally make fun of me, in front of the entire class. sorry for having a phobia, assholes.

they put a cooking timer on my desk for every assignment because I was "too smart" and "got bored and distracted"

In kindrgarten, we had this teachers aid that would ball up her fists and hit us over the head when we got in trouble. She only did it when the actual teacher wasn't around to see it. Eventually a few of us ended up telling the teacher who was shocked. After that the aid disappeared and we ended up with a chiller one.

In first grade, I was sent to another teachers class as punishment for talking (I'm sure). I stayed in that classroom, standing and staring at a wall, while the students were at lunch. The teacher and her friend (another teacher) talked about me and my mother the whole time. Old crones...

In second grade, my teacher had us draw pictures of the planes hitting the twin towers. I remember liking the way I drew the first plane and so I went overboard drawing three additional planes. When I presented the drawing to my teacher, she took one hard look at it and then went (I shit you not) "What the hell is this?"

Six year old me was stunned. Surely she didn't think the drawing was bad. I mean did she see how well I drew those planes??? Then she goes "How many planes attacked the towers?"

"Two?"

"So why did you draw four planes, hmm?"

Needless to say I had to redo the assignment with the right amount of planes. To this day I still don't know why drawing such a tragic event was an actual school assignment. Especially right after it happened >_>

In seventh grade, I and a friend of mine would frequently go visit my kindergarten teacher at the end of the day. It was always a pleasant visit for us looking back at it, I am sure she ttaumatized some of those poor kids. She had zero problem telling them how stupid or ugly she thought they were. At the time it was funny watching her rip into her students but now I wonder how many of them grew up with self esteem issues as a result. Crazy thing is I don't remember her doing that when I was in her class. I think she just stopped giving a fuck as she got older.

My ninth grade teacher didn't want us and made it known that she didn't want us. She wanted to teach seniors but for whatever reason she got stuck with the freshmen and so she took that out on us by being extra harsh when it came to grading our work. Even other teachers would say that she was purposely failing us. I had the same teacher in twelfth grade and she was much more pleasant.

Yep. I've heard this same response when telling that story before. It's fucked up no matter what the reason behind the assignment but I really wish I could remember if she said why we were doing it.

After traumatic incidents, some psychologists will have the children draw their feelings about the incident. It's a part of art therapy. Not sure how far removed 9/11 was for you, though.

The concept itself is fine. But the way your teacher went about it was completely inappropriate, and I'm sorry you had to deal with that.

Work a ridiculous amount of unpaid hours and use their own money to provide supplies.

Im serious when I say its a toxic behaviour. Teachers being idealists is one of the reasons that education can get fucked around so much by governments. In the long run, it hurts kids.

I've become very aware of this at the college level. I've stopped making "participation" be part of my grading, as some people simply won't/can't engage in public discussion (and it's unfair to mark them down for it)

For college, I think its toxic to grade attendance or have it factor for anything.

omfg yes! Grading notebooks never made sense to me (Butters). If someone's notes are really that good or bad then that should be reflected on the tests. There's no point to grading their notebooks on top of that.

You will all write (insert number of times) I will not talk in class. Yes, even if its one kids fault you all do it. Dont bother telling me you werent. I dont care.

Always hated that.

One time a sub in 6th asked me what my name was, and I responded with "it's [name], [nickname1],or [nickname2], or whatever."
He thought he was gonna pwn me and says "WELL, I GUESS I'LL JUST CALL YOU 'WHATEVER' THEN!"
I just no sold him and said "yeah, that's fine."
