Yeah, these are starting to become less about combos and more about keeping people away with special moves and projectiles.

And that's bad how? Fighting games are about space control at heart. Using specials and projectiles to keep people away is pure fighting game essence. No different from watching a Dhalsim use the limbs to keep somebody away, or Ryu chucking plasma to keep people down.

Glacial Shroud, Brutalizer, Manamune are all good items. Lategame it really depends on what you're doing but GA is good, so is bloodthirster, triforce can be an alright choice. Max Q first always, max W second for superslows. Get CDR because it owns on you.

Which goes double considering right now we're seeing a game that got flat-out KILLED by a successor who was bad (ST and HDR, for those who are curious)...and yet here we are. It's super late and yet the hype is there. If the scene is dead, stop complaining and go revive it. If you want it hard enough you'll find the people who still want to play. If not, why are you complaining anyway? It's not a big deal to you.

I talk a lot of mess about the new games, but really I don't think SF4 is awful. at least not at the level I play it at (low). I'm struck with skepticism when I hear about how high level play revolves around OS though.

I never played much Marvel, I'm really not qualified to talk about it.

SFxT I don't like but that's not an uncommon feeling.

mostly I just like 3s and ST a lot. they're really fun. I've been playing more CvS2 and VSav over the last 6 months or so as well, those are good also. it seems like post 2008 Capcom and pre 2008 Capcom had some really different design philosophies in regards to FGs. personally the earlier stuff appeals to me more.

I do wish more people would try 3s now, but there's been so much written and so much misunderstanding about it it's tough to convince people these days. especially when most people still playing 3s have been playing forever and people just walk in and eat throws and supers all day, get all their zoning parried and are like "this game is awful." there's not a lot of opportunity to learn how the game's really supposed to be played unless you're already interested and wanna watch a lot of Japan and Denjin/FFA videos.

Not really, at all. The people who worked on 3S passed taught their craft to new guys or are still there. Ono is a good example of this: in the same interview where he explained in no uncertain terms how sick of CapCom's practices he was, he said that there was absolutely no 'lucking into' 3S being as good as you think it is. He explicitly said the design team had gone 'we can't do better than this. This is an amazing game. There's nothing to improve'. You're not giving CapCom's designers enough credit. Their management is draconian and horrendous, but the guys who actually get stuff done really, really love making games and know how to do it.

Like I'm not nearly as hard on current Capcom as Omars is, but this is just a simple matter of Capcom's current games clearly trying to have a broad appeal while the Darkstalkers series has always been one of the more complex/difficult/niche/whatever Capcom fighting games. That's not a good combination for a sequel right now.

To be fair, some of the stuff that happens in VSav is a pile of lol. See: the pushblock method. It could easily afford to have some casualization (read: making systems less dumb). Nothing says it has to be made super easy though.

it baffles me that people are this excited about a new Darkstalkers game

like after their track record the last 4 years, you really want to make a sequel to your favorite game? odds are good that if you're a huge fan of the old ones you're not a huge fan of the new ones. especially since new entries in the series tend to kill the old ones even if they're obviously worse. people want a new SF3 game, or a new Darkstalkers, or a CvS3. or rebalances of something. put me in the "lol no thanks" category for all of that.

Yeah. They have a fine record if you look at everything from 09 onwards. SF4 has matured into a fine game, UMvC3 is one balance patch and having Cyclops from being flat out better than Marvel 2 even though not even three years have passed, and even SFxT had a bunch of OK ideas buried among the horribleness. I'm hyped up for Alpha 4 and the new Darkstalkers, actually. They're likely to be pretty decent.

Hey guys, been a while since I stepped in here. Finally managed to get a decent framerate going, so I've been playing some games lately and catching up. Just dropping in to say I'm open to play some games with anyone who doesn't mind some ring rust. Here's to hoping I can play with everybody and catch up soon! :D


And speaking of catching up, I just wanted to point something out for the less number-crunchy guys among us. With Jayce's release, I know there's probably lots of people who are interested in him as a stance-switching character and think it's cool as hell. The good news is, you're right, Jayce is really damn awesome. The bad news, however, is that there's absolutely no reason to stance switch except for narrow escapes in a fight.

Why? Because his Mercury Cannon form has Hyper Charge. That skill, alone, is the single most powerful steroid in the entire game...even when matched up to entire skill packages. Even Vayne's triple-skill package is worse than Hyper Charge. If you're curious as to why, the reason's simple: because he automatically has 2.5 attack speed for his first few attacks, Jayce can simply load up on pure AD and crit, utterly ignoring AS unless it comes as gravy to him, and RAVAGE his enemies with beefy automatic crits. Since you're firing off three attacks in a little more than a second, you will outburst any enemy who is even remotely in your league. This is further compounded by the fact that for some arcane reason, Hyper Charge also provides a damage boost of 30%, which means those three IE-boosted crits are going to deal utterly humongous amounts of damage (math tells me it's something like 325% damage...per hit. In other words, you're hitting for nearly the damage of ten normal autoattacks in a little more than a second, assuming three crits). To anyone who wants to win games, I heartily, heartily recommend picking up Jayce and going for a pure AD+Crit build. I haven't mapped out all the details yet, but at least on paper it seems like it should be able to dominate any matchup in spite of his shortish range, particularly because it even benefits his potent Shockblast.

On that note, a question for Red, FD and Chris, who have stuck with LoL while I was absent: the seemingly best build for Jayce ATM seems to be Zerk Greaves, IE, Critcloak, Riceblade, Atma's, Thirster (preferred order for the last three items, but absolutely DO get the critcloak early), Ghostblade, then either LW, PD, or one more Thirster. Does this look right to you guys? This setup provides Jayce with 58/88% critchance (before green pot), up to 75% bonus AS when Ghostblade is on (after emptying hypercharge of course), over 300 base AD at worst, and relatively decent defensive stats, plus a decent amount of CDR to get more Hypercharges going. It looks pretty solid to me, but I figure it's worth checking. Am I right about disregarding AS being the best choice with him?
