I think that may be it. If a Japanese show isn't aired in the west, then not many people outside of Japan will be aware that it exists. A lot of people know about Power Rangers, but unless they're part of the online PR fandom it's unlikely many of them know about Super Sentai. A lot of people that were kids when PR debuted stopped watching as they got older. I wasn't one of them though. However I myself didn't find out about Sentai until fall 2001.

Most of those who didn't stop watching, stopped watching American made conversions and moved on to the entire Tokusatsu genre. Once we realized how badly the US mangled the original Japanese materials, it's hard to go back to watching American made stuff.

Original Super Sentai, Kamen Rider, & Space Sheriff is where I ended up at.
