Rewatched this, but I always knew what I'd give it because it's one of my all-time favorite movies. In fact, so far the only film from this group that beats it imo is probably Fargo. I absolutely adore everything about this.

Cut Throat City

Honestly the way kate summed it up is pretty much exactly how I felt, though I think I enjoyed it more than she did. The concept itself was intriguing: basically an examination of how Katrina forced people into poverty, and from there into a life of crime, and while like she said it didn't dive nearly as deep into that as I wanted, I did appreciate that the movie gave them their chance to break away from the crime life after they're spared by The Saint, but didn't end there. A lesser movie might've just ended on that note like "man, getting into that crime life just ultimately wasn't worth it," but no, almost immediately it just cycles itself right back into them putting themselves into a situation they KNOW will get them killed because it feels like the only option.

While the main cast were alright, the supporting cast steals the spotlight pretty easily, with TI's Bass and Terrence Howard's Saint being the kind of memorably standout characters that I could see myself loving in a Breaking Bad-style recurring villain kind of way.

The biggest reason perhaps that I voted for this was because of seeing RZA as the director, and all things considered, despite my issues with the movie, he did a plenty serviceable job at the helm. It's mechanically well-shot, mixed, etc., and I wouldn't have expected less.

Overall I'll give it a 6/10, as I did enjoy it even if it there was a lot of room for improvement

Nobody (2021)

This movie wants so badly to be John Wick, the very air is thick with it. Is it John Wick? No, not quite. It's a solid enough action flick, although Bob Odenkirk cast as the lead wasn't the wisest choice in my opinion. He's awkward enough that seeing him as the badass actior star is jarring, but he's also a little too big of an actor (particularly recently) to just be the nobody regular joe forgettable dude the movie insists everyone thinks he is. There's just something slightly off about the performance I can't nail down.

The action is fun, and usually well shot, but not necessarily in a way that lends particular weight to the scenes. It's hard not to compare it to John Wick given the obvious influence, and Nobody, while enjoying, never hits those same high points. Best scene goes to the hacker woman early on who, upon finding out who he is, throws his files on the floor and runs out immediately. That's the kind of response necessary to really sell this premise.

Damn sorry to hear, that sucks would be an understatement. Hard not to feel gutted after losing your work like that.

I had a similar thing happen a few years back and started using One Drive to help keep things backed up.

I've tried using One Drive, but it slows down my computer way too much to use

So I'm not in too good of a place right now

My external hard drive stopped working, and even though it's still under warranty, the company that makes it doesn't cover data recovery. So I paid $75 for a data recovery device only to find out that almost every file is corrupted and can't be saved.

So in addition to wasting all that money, I've also lost the files for most of my art, all the Photoshop files for a card game I'd been working on, all of the music I was working on, in addition to who knows what else was on there.

It'll probably be a while before I bother with anything creative again

A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night

I'd meant to watch this one for years after hearing nothing but acclaim for it. It's definitely in the weird category of films that I can respect much more than I can enjoy, having an undeniably slow pace and dry demeanor. It reminds me a little of The Love Witch in the way its sleepy tone pairs with its absolute brutality. I'm always down for experimentation with horror tropes and the viewers perception of a movie monster, and the way the film flips its own title (which immediately brings in notions of a woman in danger) is pretty brilliant.

I don't know that I would watch it again. I don't know that I even really enjoyed watching it this time? It's films like these that are the hardest to rate fairly, because it is objectively well-shot, well-acted, well-scripted and an excellent concept.

Think I'll go 8/10, but maybe a low 8

Barry Lyndon

Yeah it's hard to rate this fairly because Kubrick may be a genius in terms of production and sound design and cinematography and such, but his storytelling is all over the place, and never have I been more jaded to one of his works than I was with Barry Lyndon. This strikes me entirely as Kubrick displaying his artful directing techniques and then just calling it a film by stringing together a series of barely-connected scenes using literally the worst narrative technique in film: exorbitant monotone narration. Seriously, did Michael Hordern know this wasn't a documentary?

As excellent as the movie looks (yeah yeah, every frame is a painting, natural lights, all that) it's the length of an epic drama without any of the epic... or the drama.

Figured this would do well just by being a Tarantino film, but pleasantly surprised it actually made the top 5!

This really is basically Stagecoach but better. Say what you want about that being a classic but the difference in skill from a writing and character perspective is nearly undeniable. The direction is on par but from a visual perspective there's obviously just so much more that is possible in filmmaking than nearly 100 years earlier.

tried copying their color scheme and shading to get it as close to theirs as possible, just so I could notice differences more



aside from the obvious proportion things, it looks like I also went a lot thicker/darker with the outlines and a little darker on the shading. I really don't understand how artists get lineart that crisp but it definitely didn't turn out terrible.

so for anyone that knows more about art than me:

I've been trying to work on finding my art style, particularly working on trying to have better lineart (in SAI it seems like the lines are always just a little shaky and unclean no matter how high of a stabilizer I use)

so tonight I saw a picture on Twitter that seems like the type of art style I could ideally go for, so I just thought I could try and recreate it, just using it as reference



really tried to focus on having as clean lines as possible but mine still don't feel clean enough, and I'm still struggling with proportions

holy shit this movie aged surprisingly well. For something that came out in 1931, this feels more like it belongs in like early 70s gangster era. It's extremely well shot, makes way better use of its sound than just about anything else I've seen from that time, and just has a thrilling and intriguing mystery manhunt from start to finish.

Well, almost start to finish I should say. The film does lose one point for me from about halfway to 3/4, when the film's pace slams on the break, and the manhunt drops off the screen to have a policeman trying to figure out where the killer is being taken and blaaaah. It had such an incredible setup, with the crime bosses of the area all working together to stop this serial killer in order to get the cops off high alert, and then stretches things out a bit too long just as it seems the film is about to hit its climax.

But when that moment finally comes, oh man, that last scene in the underground kangaroo court was so good.

9/10
