I really liked the finale. I'll post more later maybe when I'm not about to clock in to work. I'll need to rewatch Season 7 to give it an "official" ranking, but tentatively:

6 > 4 > 1 = 3 = 7 > 2 = 5

Lots of equaling makes for a dry list, I grant you, but there are differing strengths and weaknesses at play and I don't have the spoons to get more technical until I watch the whole thing again.

I am feeling pretty confident at least one of those writing teams is hoping to break open the enigma of the Doom. Full stop. Aegon's Conquest feels like something some other team is probably pitching. We know that Robert's Rebellion will not be one of the prequel ideas, but I feel like it's too limited in scope for an open world game. Like, by far.

I'm banking on the Doom of Valyria being one of the five prospective spinoff pitches. I'm banking on at least two more of those being things hardcore fans really want to see. I'm curious what Bethesda Game Studios, if it's them, would do in that regard. Maybe something set during the time period of the original Azor Ahai, the Long Night, etc

There's actually been a rumor that this is going to be a thing. This and another game called Starfield (which supporters of the rumor claim Bethesda 'lightly teased' by presenting their logo with a starry background at E3 this year.)

EDIT: Had I read the article before posting, I'd have seen that it already states what I said.

People aren't nostalgic for old tv, especially non-animated, since it was just shitty sitcoms and episodic crime shows until like 10 years ago.

The Wire
The Sopranos

Star Trek Deep Space Nine
Battlestar Galactica
24
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Angel
Farscape
Babylon 5
Deadwood
Carnivale
Dead Like Me
Roots
etc

There was actually a fair bit of serialized fare prior to 2007. Not nearly as much, but it was out there.

Gameplay means more than just battle systems and customization suites. It's the minigames, the moment-to-moment exploration, the relative interest (or disinterest) in what lies beyond that next beaten path.

Final Fantasy frequently excels at some of this.

Doesn't the Yunkai takeover happen mainly off screen? It's more comparable to Casterly Rock/Highgarden than to this episode.

There's a scene this episode when everyone backs up in a circle. I believe I counted twelve at the time. All five redshirts obviously died.

The difference (IMO) is that Yunkai spends several minutes on Jorah/Daario/Grey Worm traipsing through doing battle, establishes Daario as at least partially trustworthy, tries for an "epic" three-against-twenty action sequence. None of it really hits the right notes for me.

I honestly had my concerns with the notion of Alan Taylor directing a battle episode of any sort, as it seemed likely he would be doing, especially once the preview landed. He's never proven himself to me in this regard -- I know it had corporate red tape all over itself, but Thor: The Dark World is a decent example of my trepidation. He's great at up-close introspective shots. He's great at memorable small-scale moments. He's kind of a mess at this.

Compounding matters is the fact that when 7x05 aired and there were a couple of brief shots of the redshirts -- some random number of them, I don't remember -- I turned to my friend and said, "that's not a good establishing shot. The internet is going to be confused next week when those poor blokes start dying." Most people I've spoken with seemed completely oblivious to their existence until they started dropping. Even plenty of fodder in the Star Trek shows establishes itself on some level before croaking, even on TOS itself.

The battle in "Beyond the Wall" gets a lot better once Daenerys arrives, because the pure CG spectacle of her dragons and the Night King obliterating one of them is superior to much of the more human efforts on land beforehand. There are a few nice shots in the leadup, like some of the angles used when Tormund gets knocked down, and a couple of Jon's strikes. (Probably courtesy of Kit being fairly well-trained at this point.) But all told, it's messy and loses its characters and confounds people with its redshirts. When the audience expects big death and gets peons, my point about GoT willingly subverting "deathxpectation" in favor of surprise life is continually proven, and not necessarily for the best. Critics this week are literally calling for important character blood to start shedding again, haha.

I still rather like this episode despite its issues, but yeah, that was one of the weaker duke-outs. Beats job fare like the Battle for Yunkai in "The Rains of Castamere" (which holds that episode back more than folks will ever notice; it's so poorly-directed and lacks any punch whatsoever) and earns plenty of points for pure spectacle toward the end. But it can't be discussed in the same vein as Blackwater, Castle Black, Hardhome, Winterfell.

I really hope they don't keep dropping that "bomb" like it's some sort of actual revelation though.

But with Bran and Sam hanging around I feel like we're going to get it at least twice more.

I kind of hope Howland Reed shows up just because they did show him surviving the Tower of Joy scene in the show, but I know he won't.

The odds are there for the possibility. Meera name-checked him at the gate of The Wall in 7x01 unnecessarily and when she left Bran in 7x04 she said she had to go be with her family now. Given that I doubt we've seen the last of her, I give Howland showing up a solid 75% chance for Season 8.

You won't get more than a few lines of real value, though.

Likely. And the internet will explode with a protest of "who even didn't know at this point?" and a sizable counter-protest of "um, excuse me, not everyone watches every episode sixteen times in their mom's basement, speak for yourselves, I didn't know" and a counter counter-protest of "wtf?"

I feel like this may have been the last time anyone goes beyond the Wall, so this was like their last chance to "resolve" the hanging Benjen plot. So they wrote for Jon to stay behind as a way for him to see Benjen. Though I mean they could've easily just had them find Benjen while on the hunt for a wight and still had him die while buying Jon enough time to get back on Drogon or whatever.

Pretty much. Benjen literally can't go south of the Wall, so they threw him 45 seconds to go out in a (literal) blaze of glory, making good on his promise to Bran last season that he'd keep fighting until he couldn't.

He saved Bran. He saved Jon. He did plenty. And now his watch is ended.

Tom's best episode is "Thirty Days", and there's no real contest. He chronicles the events of a recent mission whilst serving time in the brig, and the underwater visuals of said mission are genuinely matched by good writing. Tom is a sympathetic character in this episode, with appreciable motivations. His descent into demotion is sympathetic, because he wanted to do the right thing. He spends the hour writing to his estranged father, logging his alleged mistakes. It shows a depth to a man whose snark is finally maturing into something greater.

It's too bad, then, that after "Thirty Days" Tom only occasionally continues this paradigm shift. Too often, he reverts to the trickster reject whose pranks aren't funny. But there is growth, and certain select episodes demonstrate that, so Tom -- like most (but not all) of Voyager's cast -- is a better person in the back half of the series.

The good news is that after 148 hours I'm finally running out of things to do in my Dragon Age: Inquisition replay. I've got, like, 40-50% of the content left in Jaws of Hakkon (hard to say, honestly; first time here) and then however long Trespasser takes me. I got way more absorbed in this game than I anticipated. It's the first time in years I've really, truly been absorbed by a video game long-term. Once it's cleared, I'm not picking anything else up for weeks, because TNCR and my B5 topic have both become embarrassingly stagnant (insofar as my own content is concerned; y'all are great) as @VengefulKaelee can attest on both counts.

There is no bad news, really. Well, unless you're a fan of...

55. Tom Paris
APGc408
"Why am I starting to get the feeling you don't like me very much?"
Best Episode: "Thirty Days"
Worst Episode: "Parturition"

I'll be honest with you. I have no idea where that GIF is from. But if it doesn't get capture the funk, nothing will.

Thomas Eugene Paris tops the board insofar as "characters Quinton liked more as a kid" are concerned. You've seen me say this twice previously, and you'll likely see me say it at least one more time. But there is no one on the magnitude of Paris except Paris. When I was a boy, I found his cynical "wit" funny. I loved how he bucked authority and did his own thing. I thought he was too cool for school. I wanted to be like him -- delinquent yet piloting an impressive starship far away from the real world. I was charmed that he didn't much care about reaching Earth, because he felt like there was precious little waiting for him there. It all clicked.

Then I got older. The lines became cracks. Tom's a scathing idiot whose sense of humor is, in fact, not great. The show wants you to think he's funny. He is occasionally funny. Robert Duncan McNeill is too talented an actor not to make the forays into decent writing shine for what they're worth. But so much of his script is whining, unjustly. So much of his script is insulting others in some snide attempt at endearing us to him. Maybe it works for kids, but it shouldn't work for adults. The chip on his shoulder gets overplayed to the point that he becomes an asshole for the sake of being an asshole, and I'm not sure this was what the creators intended, but whoop, there it is.

He also has an obscene fascination with the 20th century, because UPN thought it needed every conceivable way to connect to modern viewers. Problem #1: it's dull and every wink at the audience comes across as a stutter. No one cares that you know what a Ford Model-T is, Tom. No one cares that you wear Hawaiian t-shirts. No one cares that you eat popcorn and watch old Paramount movies. OK, Paramount cares, but I bet that's awkward for CBS these days. Problem #2: other aspects of the show get so corny and casual audience off-putting sometimes that Tom's attempts at pulling in a bigger crowd must surely have fallen on deaf ears, anyway. Better luck with Seven, y'all.

Tom's got his relationship with B'Elanna, which, unlike some of my peers, I enjoy. Yes, it sort of neuters B'Elanna herself. As you can see, I have not ranked her yet. In fact, I don't believe anyone has. This is because she is superior to Tom. So it's unfortunate that Tom spays and neuters his B'Elanna, because Tom himself was castrated straight out the gate, but nevertheless the two of them share some good moments together that reveal another side of the character. Even Tom gets a few decent moments out of it. I guess.

No he isn't. I highly disagree with that assessment. His dialgoue writing is not anywhere near where it used to be and it has nothing to do with hin being second fiddle to Dany

Do you not think that his wisecracking worked better when held up against Cersei and Tywin? He's now with a leader he actuslly likes and believes in. He doesn't have Cersei's incest to joke about or Joffrey to embarrass to Bronn to banter with. I feel like that situation, where he was the outcast and got to have all these scenes that had an innate conflict suited his character better.

Maybe the writing has declined, but with Tyrion I definitely think he's just not in a position to do the stuff that originally made him so popular. He used to be a loveable rogue, now he's more straight-laced.

So with Sam ditching out on Oldtown as I'd figured he would, and with the maesters not likely to chase after him considering the show never bothered having even Randyll Tarly chase after him, I reckon one of two things happens with Sam: the maester dream is never again moved along, or he survives the series, returns, and it's all Broadbent can do to shrug and give him a "saved-the-world" chain

I seriously thought Arya was spying on Littlefinger macking on some redheaded chick at first and was like"this is where we're taking this?" thank goodness I was mistaken, his singular devotion to Tully lineage is one of his defining creeptastic qualities

Littlefinger's possible plan -- to frame Sansa for Arya so the sisters feud and Arya can be eliminated, I suppose? -- is the first real thing he's done all season, and I'm glad he's doing something. Curious to see where this goes. They knew we'd pause on the letter Arya finds, and I was surprised when I discovered it was the letter Cersei forced Sansa to pen years ago. Really not what I was expecting

This is another good Cersei/Jaime scene. Both actors always bring fire, but if the writing can't match it, it falls flat. Well, again, I'm not so keen on the "there's a baby again" twist but we'll see what happens I guess, both these characters' long-term livelihood is so unlikely, anyway

Jon/Gendry instabros, love it

I really thought if Gendry ever came back he'd smith dragonglass. Maybe he still will, if he survives this ordeal, but yeah, still

Tyrion giving Jorah the coin is good. Meawhile, Jon misunderstanding Jorah's and Daenerys' body language is the only thing about their interactions together I've actively disliked. The rest I love. Mmmm, especially their theme music

You know it's a darn good thing Daario got left behind. This Jon/Daenerys/Jorah starefest would be uncontrollably dire

also not terribly relevant because that's not a situation he'd run into as king

(also not accurate because he compromised in allowing renly's old army to join him without any fuss about the fact that they literally committed treason against him)

I mean, the Small Council would be screwed but they were corrupt and I'm not sure they were staffed by anyone capable of causing much trouble at the time anyway (circa Blackwater.)
