Lawyer called me and said at face value, if everything I said is true (money I took out = money I contributed into Roth IRA and none of it is earned from investments), I will owe no additional taxes.

She said there might be some penalties of $50/tax year I failed to report this on my tax return though (like the fact that I contributed x to Roth and took out x).

She also noted the IRS is severely backlogged, and after she responds, itll take 6-12 months for the IRS to review and respond.

Diversifying is generally the best option. S&P is one of the safest ways but it wont really grow much at all, especially in a recession.

But nothing else grows in a recession. S&P500 isn't only the safest way, but it's like the best compared to any and all mutual funds. Hell, S&P500 beats my Betterment 90% stocks/10% bonds diversification.

Googling it and talking with advisors say that it's not smart to invest in just the S&P500, since it won't have a nice blended mix of stocks and bonds. But S&P500 index was always better than a targeted retirement date mutual fund, in both how much they lose during a recession and how much they gain outside of it.

So............. what's the real reason?

lol fair enough I mean even so you can still appeal it and have the penalties reversed. An underreporting dept sent that to you so something is not adding up on the notice, might want to look at the rest of the thing beyond just pg 1 if you haven't already.

Did you not get a 1099-R for this? You have to report the gross amount, then report $0 as taxable if it is truly nontaxable. The IRS will tax all of it if you dont report it.

How old is your Roth IRA account? You have to wait 5 years from the account opening to take out money tax free, iirc.

There are too many details in this topic.

I took out some money from my Roth IRA, but I took out less than what I put in, which I thought was okay and thus will incur no penalties (nor taxes). I didnt report this either on my income, because I didnt think I needed to report it.

I shared these info and documents with my lawyer; going to wait to see what he says, hopefully tomorrow.

Summary-
John Oliver talks about how HOAs provide local service within your development (e.g., parks, swimming pools, landscaping), but can also have a ton of power. With that power, some HOAs fine you for violations (e.g., house looks non-uniform, garbage visible), and if you dont pay the fines, can evict you and foreclose on you based on the unpaid fines+lawyer fees. Government also stays out of this cant really help you since HOAs a private entity that you agreed to join. In the end, he states that over 80% of new developments are in an HOA, so its hard for you to get a new house.

Hot Take-
Homeowners literally bought into an HOA. Its your own fault for not following the rules, letting fines build up, not voicing your oppositions at HOA meetings, etc. Buying a home isnt an accident; it takes a significant amount of effort. This is your own fault if you get suckered into a shitty HOA.

Background: I personally own two houses and both are not in HOAs. Based on my experience of buying four houses in my lifetime, it wasnt that difficult to find homes without HOAs.

Apple Maps is not good. Google Maps is much better, so I'm primarily using that. Still trying to figure out how to get the phone to automatically open addresses with Google Maps, if that's even possible. I like the detailed architecture in some places that Apple Maps has, but a lot of the satellite imagery is very old, while Google updates theirs periodically. Apple Maps' satellite images are still from before my neighborhood was ever built.

Get the app called "Opener". With that, you can set default apps things should open when you tap on a prompt. For example, when you see an address, hold on the address, and iOS will prompt what you want to do with that address (open, share, etc.); tap on "Opener", and it'll open it up on Google Maps (or Waze, or whatever app you set it to).

You can use Opener for other prompts as well (like e-mail addresses to open gmail, links to open up on Chrome, Reddit links to open up on Apollo, etc.).

We bought a two family home with a split entrance so that we can have in-house help with our baby, in exchange for my in-laws living with us for free (and we dont pay for daycare, which is a huge plus).

The arrangement works out amazingly for everyone: in-laws are happy with the baby, we can do stuff whenever we want and arent tied to a daycare timing, we have a trusted person to take care of our baby anytime/babysit, $$$ goes into our equity and not daycare, etc.

But the negatives are that it feels weird having sex with their daughter in the same house and I cant walk around with my boxers on.

Part of commissioning a work is that money paid is money that will not be taken back, unless something wasnt delivered. Continue to with the artist to get work re-done (hopefully at no additional cost to you), or offer an incentive (pay for additional work).
