Genesis OG Xbox I think these three systems will reasonably be hurt in credibility if you limit one game per franchise or series -- it's hard not to imagine two Mario/Sonic/Halo games for each of these. They were just so core to those system experiences. I believe the PS1 has a similar but lesser risk with Final Fantasy getting multiple reps on the mountain. If you're going to test this kind of rule, maybe try it with the other systems I named first to see how that goes without the rule first...and if that starts to get weird, you can always add the rule here by then. But I do think Metal Gear Solid, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Crash Bandicoot, and people's general tendencies not to flood their nominations with the same series/franchise (alongside FF7 being the overwhelming favorite for FF-rep this generation) will be enough to stunt this risk you're concerned about. --- O P E R A T I O N O U S T : Nominate SHEIK! https://i.imgur.com/OpudFxm.jpg |

SMB1 I've returned back to this post a few times and respect the framing. If no other 2D game's impacted 2D platformers like SMB1, and if no other 3D game's impacted 3D platformers like SM64, in this framing, does it even make sense to get other reps like them? Ranging from SMB3 to Wonder, from Galaxy to Odyssey...in that framing, do you need another rep? I get that argument and am riffing from here for the other two. Mario Kart an undeniably influenced kart racers so I think a rep is appropriate in this context. We can argue about which one, but whatever. So far this lines up with my votes anyway so cool. That fourth spot...I voted World, right, but also if the ideas's about how other games were impacted by Mario...shew. it might be Mario Party -- huge series of its own, plus other party games like Fusion Frenzy and Fall Guys fit this vein from after the original Party-trilogy. Did these kinds of multiplayer minigame-collections exist much before 1999? Even other Nintendo variations like Remix and WarioWare. Have we seen an influx of game creators since Mario Maker? Mega Man Maker comes to mind, but that's a fan project. Little Big Planet beat Mario Maker to the punch here too but it seems to have faded off. No particular Mario Sports game stands out to me in this framing. Like...maybe Golf on the NES? Think that had Mario in it, but eeeeeeeeh. SMRPG was huge but I don't think it's influence on the likes of South Park: the Stick of Truth is enough. Maybe this is bigger than I'm realizing though. I think Smash would be the answer if it counted, but it doesn't and I don't think it should count. Agreeing with this. Maybe NSMBW makes it on in a Rushmore-setting, but as far as Mario-favorites go I would predict it to be the third-favorite Mario game on the Wii. That's largely why I'm cynical about it being on a Mario-Rushmore if it's #3 among Mario games on just the Wii. I'm so impressed with how the characters are represented. I used to never like Yuffie and Cait Sith -- now they're engaging like the rest of the cast. That's so surprising and cool. SMW SM64 MK8D SM64 is the only one you can't go without. I can see subbing out...
...but SM64 is safe. Also, New Mario-anything we've seen from that side-series so far ain't ever getting in. They just aren't good enough yet for this conversation and Mario fans sniffed that out a long time ago. Not retyping all that again, but 4 --> 5 is the answer. Ya'll have touched on the 3D-expansion of dimensions and genres already. Controllers completely changed too that generation to allow this. Joysticks and later dual analog changed everything -- there were significant shifts from d-pad gameplay. They allowed for Nintendo to have memory cards, and rumble packs were introduced first as accessories before being built in. The Playstation controller began that generation, the most definitive base controller of 3D-gaming. The Nintendo 64 made it easier than ever for four players to play together. Even in the designer-gamer angle, it's the first time I really remember being able to buy controllers (and systems) in different colors...look how far that's gone since then. The controllers have always evolved, but this generation evolved them enough to support the overall case already made for 4 --> 5. One's like Samus VS Midna and one's like Mario VS Toad if Mario sometimes had to be the write-in option: even if you run those fifty times each, it's hard for either of them to tell you more of what to expect in a rematch of Mario VS Samus than when they last faced off years ago.
